TEL AVIV. - President Leonel Fernandez arrived in Israel Monday night for talks with Israeli president Shimon Peres and ex British prime minister Tony Blair.

Upon arriving at 9 p.m. local time accompanied by Margarita Cedeño, the Head of State was received by Israeli officials and Dominican ambassador Alexander de la Rosa and other diplomats.

Fernandez also visited Palestine, where he stressed the need to push that nation’s peace process with Israel, recognizing the latter’s right to safe borders and the former’s right to statehood.

“The government of the Dominican Republic supports completely and in a consistent manner the right of the Palestinian people to constitute itself as an independent State, coexisting peacefully with the State of Israel,” Fernandez said in a press conference, after being received by Palestine Authority president Mahmoud Abbas.

He said those goals must be reached achieve in adherence with the United Nations Resolution in effect.

On Tuesday Fernandez will head the seminar “High Tech Investment in Dominican Republic,” where he’ll tout his country’s advantages and reaches to invest, in addition to other bilateral meetings.

This government press release shows that this trip , as like many before it has little to do with the DR but a whole lot to do with LF, who is attenpting to position himself as some kind of international player so he can be offered a position with maybe the non aligned nations or the UN .Really , can anyone imagine that the DR can inluence decisions about Israel and the Palestinian issues and what has Blair got to do withanything now except be a go between ,
If only he would come back and oversee the modernisation of his own civil service so it would be less of a financial drag on the people and could be more efficient , if only he as a lawyer could reform the legal system with good law and order programmes, then he would achieve much more international cudos

My preferences are for him to do BOTH. Yes, engage in promoting DR to the wider international Community of Nations. Try to expand cross cultural exchanges and trading opportunities. BUT do so based on good domestic policies back home. All the points: Need for uplifting the professionalism and standards of the Civil service and the Foreign service departments are urgently needed. So too many other aspects of DR's inept administration. A very tall order of seeming impossible magnitude is the job of a President in such demanding circumstances, but he wanted the job, and has had three terms. And to think that we have had many other worse Presidents. Hippo, Blanco,.. Wow!

Could he be following our U.S Prez. "Oh'No" route with the international leadership role crap while ignoring the problems back home ?
