Santo Domingo.- The National Police has dismantled a gang of thieves who targeted passengers returning to the country via Las Americas International Airport.

According to the police report, the gang used hire cars to intercept the passengers on the highway from the airport.

The authorities named the ringleaders as Bruno Nolasco and Kelvin Sena, who were arrested in a police raid in the Santo Domingo East neighborhood of El Almirante.

One of the gang’s victims was Mrs. Gladys Espinosa Fresa, 42, who was robbed of three suitcases containing clothing, gifts and thousands of dollars. They also stole her hand luggage with her travel documents, perfume, cell phones and other items.

The police authorities believe the gang was responsible for a series of similar robberies that targeted returning air passengers traveling on the Las Americas Highway. They are searching for more gang members in the neighborhoods of El Almirante, Valiente and La Caleta.

Viajeros should keep their travel plans to themselves, because it seems obvious those thieves target their victims beforehand.

-"Belkis llega el Domingo" shouts a voice in the barrio.

Se jodió Belkis ahi mismito.

Those gangs only target Dominicans returning to DR. I bet this chica told someone she is coming with money and gifts and she was dressed to attract attention and wore a lot of jewery. I see it all the time on flights to SDQ.
Women bring too much attention to themselves when traveling to DR.

Noticed that these people were standing on the side of the road. Here is a novel idea...instead of grossly overpriced taxis that few can afford...how about bus service? I think it embarrassing that I cannot take a bus from anywhere to Las Americas, unless I want to be dumped off on the side of the road and take a $15 drive for 2 minutes in a beat up Corolla or a Caprice with 4 different tire sizes to the airport. Modern society we have here...a metro...but no service to the country's flagship airport.

I agree PuntaCanaMike. The beat up cabbies be damned. And you could have different size buses serving the route. Cleaner and safer for all, too.

yep...especially avoiding those cabbies who carry propane tanks behind the passengers. On the other hand, no need to purchase a plane ticket...I'll just get rear-ended and blown into the next goddamn country or the ionosphere!

Nice Welcome

What a Banana Republic

I am sick of this country and have stopped promoting all investments. This country is no more better off now than 100 years ago. It is still the wild wild west of thieves and crooks robbing the honest people on the stage coach. How can anyone promote a country where politicians and judges are scamming together with Embargo Assaults that are pure legal embezzlement. How you promote a country where the press silence in paid off or silenced with death threats. It is sad but after 7 years of promoting investing in the DR I have stopped and will never set foot in the country again .....not even for a Punta Cana vacation becuase I think there are plenty of nice places I'd rather go.

Everyone knows this gang has been doing this for YEARS! The police could have done a sting operations with decoys back in 2006.

I guess it just takes someone who is a relative or politically connected to really get something done.

But, I agree that a real deterent to crime is the Watcher48 method. With all the deportees from the USA being release from prison and then deported. The criminal element is growning fast, no to mention the home-grown criminals.

Well DT you need to start doing some serious investigating , because this is REAL BS, last night my cousin and other's went to pick some one at the SDQ airport, and on there way back home, they where heldup at Gunpoint and guess who held them up Uniform cops, or probably thief's dress as cops, well same shit. And 15 minutes later the supposedly real cops, came along without anyone calling them.

1. This has been going on since the 80s... nothing new.
2. Dominicans advertise and talk to much when they come back home.... big mistake. (2011 nothing has changed).
3. You have leeches walking the airport all day just looking for people on item # 2 above.
4. Dominicans will never learn from there mistakes and will blame someone else always.
5. Authorities and the gangs are partners in crime the minute you land in DR, you might be robbed twice.
6. 95% chance that the authorities will break into your luggage before the gangs rob you on the highway.
7. No matter what you'll get robbed one way or the other as soon as you leave your seat on the plane and walk into the airport.
