SANTO DOMINGO.- Drugs Control Agency (DNCD) president Rolando Rosado announced Sunday the confiscation nationwide during the weekend of 39 hookahs or water pipes in bars, discos and night clubs, which Justice Ministry officials say are used to consume narcotics, mainly marijuana.

He said the DNCD acted on a request by the Justice Ministry to investigate the use of hookahs for drug consumption, which led to their confiscation where alcoholic beverages are sold, including colmados, hairdressing salons and other businesses.

Rosado added that the hookahs were sized in separate searches in the Santo Domingo Province municipalities of Boca Chica, Santo Domingo and Santo Domingo East, and in western Azua and San Juan de la Maguana provinces.

Yea, but the consumption of alcoholic beverages are still the number ONE cause of death on the roads. I have yet to here that someone O.D'ed on WEED or poisoned the way alcohol does.

Confiscating hookahs from colmados while generals(replace with any higher up military/police position here) covertly help in moving thousands of pounds of more dangerous drugs throughout the country daily. I guess you have to look like your doing something to combat it.

This represents another step towards doing nothing about the drug problems here.

ya know..Hookahs (or shisha) pipes are NOT illegal...only what you decide to put in them. I guess muslims can't open up a hookah bar there, eh?

Hookah pipes are used all over the world to smoke tobacco. What a regressive and backward decision this was. Is there no objective review of public policy before it is implemented. Is this a dictatorship or fascist country. why don't they confiscate all syringes too because people might use them to inject illegal drugs- o but i forgot that is where the money comes from to drive the political process... that's why officials caught involved are only forced to retire with pensions instead of doing time. another 3 steps backward for the DR
