Santo Domingo.- The President’s Council on AIDS (Copresida) revealed Wednesday that the Caribbean region is the world’s second highest zone in the number of HIV AIDS patients, and the Hispaniola Island, shared by Haiti and Dominican Republic, has 80% of the cases.

Copresida director Gustavo Rojas said the situation stems from the high incidence of AIDS in Haiti.

He said those affected with the disease in Dominican Republic have more access to retroviral, once the Essential Medicine Program (PROMESE) entered the network of suppliers.

Rojas affirmed that a study with 2008 data found that the program’s annual cost was nearly RD$1.1 billion, with 49 funding with international aid, 26% from the Government, and 25% from the patients themselves.

Very sad news. Nevertheless, this report needs actual figures for each country. Am sure they are not 50% each.

80% of the total cases in the Caribbean are on the island of Hispaniola is what this article claims. So, for arguments sake say there are 100,000 people HIV infected in the Caribbean, 80,000 would be on the island of Hispaniola. Whatever the numbers, this is an enormous problem facing the two nations. But I suspect that the true breakup between the DR and Haiti points to a far larger problem in Haiti. The article should state the statistical data supporting the conclusion.

"In 2009 an estimated 17,000 people in the Caribbean became infected with HIV, and around 12,000 died of AIDS. After sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean has a higher HIV prevalence than any other area of the world, with 1 percent of the adult population infected.1

Heterosexual sex is the main route of transmission throughout the Caribbean. Women are particularly vulnerable to HIV infection; more than half of people living with HIV are women.

Other vulnerable groups include men who have sex with men (MSM)

who are often overlooked by prevention, treatment and care services. This is despite reports that HIV prevalence is as high as 32 percent among some groups of MSM."

Country Living with HIV/AIDS Deaths due to
AIDS during 2009
All people
Adult (15-49)
prevalence %
Bahamas 6,600 3.1 <500
Barbados 2,100 1.4 <100
Cuba 7,100 0.1 <100
Dominican Republic 57,000 0.9 2,300
Haiti 120,000 1.9 7,100
Jamaica 32,000 1.7 1,200
Trinidad and Tobago 15,000 1.5 <1,000

So based on the 2009 stats the DR had 57,000 HIV infected people and Haiti 120,000.

The news report is intentionally bias, possibly to aim for more international financial aid for Dominican Republic.
By putting the statistics of the two countries together, gives the impression that the AIDS epidemic has to be considered for the whole island, which is totally wrong, and would eventually hurt our DR tourism.
This ninkenpoop public official, in his verbally incontinent statement creates the wrong impression about the DR to the general public.
The statistics should be published for each country individually, not the whole island. Haiti's figures are definitely higher than DR's, and we should not be proud of those in either case, but the tourist public should not be misled, with information that will discourage visitors.

I agree Generoso that the stats should have been published in separate national information statements, or at least, have provided both tallies. From the 2009 stats above, the figures for DR perhaps are inflated as these may include Haitians living in DR.

I doubt many Dominicans are included in the Haitian numbers.

But whatever the true statistical breakup, the DR must do more to cut the transmission of HIV. Controlling the border would serve to help this potential positive development.

I love you man.... LOL Haitians are not recognized in the DR so how can those numbers include them....

Due to the type work I do , I've had the opportunity to visit many islands and no matter how much I would want to cover up for my people, Dominican girls are the Queens for Prostitution in the Caribbean...
I work shock see how many they were in HAITI on my last visit.

Dominicans contract AIDS because they can't keep their legs closed while Haitian contract it probably coz they cant afford to protect themselves.

WOW! What the fluck! Can you please clarify your statistics by tomorrow morning. Are you saying that within the Caribbean, 80% of "patients" or cases are either from Hispaniola Island, Haiti or the Dominican Republic. I don't think you can have 80% of the cases worldwide. That's not even possible. You are forgetting about the USA and Africa. The USA is probably number 1 by now; the land of the free, home of the brave.
Anyway, I am NOW very scared. So, if I marry a lady from DR, I would have to wear a rubber, a condom always? You have got to be flucking kidding me! Sweet Jesus! Well, what I will do is to bring up the subject right from the start: "Hi, my name is Kaliman! Do you have AIDS or not? If you are not sure, then let's go take a test now and then let's take a test 6 months later to make sure. We can't do anything intimately romantinc or NASTY until after 6 months." That's the safest bet. The contrary will be a gamble with all odds against you basically. LOL, but seriously!

like any dominican, they are JUST A NUMBER in terms of statistics!!! the PROOF that they count is on the Cholera cases that the Health Ministery reports, FOR YOUR INFORMATION case one RECORDED on DR was a HAITIAN, the pan-american health office REQUIRES, i repeat REQUIRES that anyone treated on a country be counted under their statistics , THAT IS THE REASON why we are affected by statistics of almost Dying haitians that come to deliver on DR (increase on the Maternal Deaths) or sick childs (infant Deaths)

PS. due to the type of my work i ALSO travel to many islands on the caribbean, EVEN went to a PUBLIC Hospital on St. Kitts, were i had to PAY about $200 US for a EKG and some Malox...Hatians and even you if needed to are not asked for papers and don't pay anything that the dominicans don't, what if DR was not counting Haitians????

PS2. BEWARE of write BS writen BY EAR on a subject that you ignore and expose your argument to be flushed on toilet like what just happened.

you can blame the Roman Catholic church for many of these AIDS cases by their ban on condoms and you can also blame the government for not encouraging the sale of condoms in every super mecardo and every comado and every convenience shop ...condoms should be cheap and on display ...far cheaper to do it that way than to pay the nedical and hospital costs ...
the Roman Catholic church has much blood on its hands over this matter . Thank Goodness, that inmany countries , even catholics disobey the church and use condoms always .

It is a pity that we the people have not even begun to look behind the curtain of the BIG LIE of HIV/ AIDS. It is all about funding and money and the bogus science behind the HIV/AIDS connection. I would encourage readers to read about Robert Gallo and his despicable PR stunt that became the War on Aids. How many of you know that Gallo profits every time an Aids test is made and that his Western Blot test produces false positives like crazy. Not that is matters since the so-called HIV virus has never even been isolated.
Thousands of imminent virologists and other real scientists [not research grant hounds] dispute categorically this BS HIV/AIDS fairy tale. How many lives are destroyed by these phony positive readings? And how many people die from the drug treatments? And how many countries get painted with the scarlet letter of HIV/AIDS.

I'm Catholic......no more but as I remember even the church was against sex out of wedlock.

When will people start taking PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN ACTIONS ? And stop looking for excuses for their own bad judgement with drastic deadly consequences.

I wonder how many will be willing to slam dance a female knowing she was HIV infected ?

Even with a full body iron double clad hefty trash bag.

100% that chick [any chick] would never admit to being HIV positive even if asked in the first place.

I remember reading back in the mid 1990's gay blades in San Francisco started wearing t-shirts that read "I'm HIV negative".

I would not be surprised if the hard working ladies in the streets of the DR would follow suit.

STOP ! use your head....the one above your shoulders....one can acquire HIV prior to using that condom before playing a game of TAG YOUR IT.

riosm ,,,I agree with you ...everyone should be responsible for their own actions ,,but my point is that in countries where Aids is rife ,condoms are scarce ,in responsible countries condoms are available in petrol stations , often in public bathrooms and every shop and there are signs urging men always to wear condoms when having sex,,,But in the DR , the church combined with the government does not encourage the use of condoms and in most farmacias the condoms are kept out of sight and la pela in full view

I also agree but, condoms are a real money maker. One would think extra active women would carry packs and a "ready freddy" would carry one in his wallet for those unexpected adventures of self gratification.

Still the responsibility lies on the individual [it takes two to tangle] one would think after HIV, STD's and unwanted pregnancies.

A good start would be Father's teaching their sons to respect women in general, it does not surprise me that women in the DR are seen as sex objects.

AND...

Mothers teaching their daughters self respect "looks aren't everything" and "looks come and go".

What's sad is being head-up in public [DR] by working women while your with your wife.

This virus is nothing more then population control. And these are not my words " The Australian governement is infecting the Aboriginal peoples with HIV and I hate it". This came from a white Australian contractor while I was in Iraq a couple of years ago. It's hard to argue against them when those natives didn't have HIV at 1st, but all of a sudden its widespread within thier tribes. It will not surprise me if those "primitive" tribes in the Amazon start to have HIV cases if they don't allow the logging industry free reign to their land. The link below proves my point of intentional infection.

It's not like catching the virus in the food, water or even a sneeze in public, the virus is spread though human sexual contact.

Government can not control personal human behavior.

One of the best ways to stop the spread of HIV is to live a clean life style.

I think the Roman Catholic church should say to every one of its members...we do not believe in promescuity but please be aware that unprotected sex can be dangerous .
me osiris ..the white contractor from Australia is simply talking complete nonsense ,,the reason why the aboriginal people have a higher percentage of AIDS cases is the same as why they have the higher percentage of drunken ness , the higher percentage of syphilis , the higher percentage of glaucomia and other eye diseases , the higher percentage of petty criminals .It has nothing to do with the Australian government.

So, lets say as stated...57,000 in this country have aids. The population is approx 10 million.

What if the headline said...Less One Half Percent of the country's population has AIDS?

Airgordo,

You bring up a very interesting point regarding Semana Santa, the church quietly condones the festivals with all the crazy behaviorals displayed [anything goes] people parade the streets dressed like demons "Dia de los deablos" as historically called.

I call it the "AIDS festival" a U.S version of "Marti gra" with the motto "get the beads" the more the merrier.

Mexico has it's own version "Dia de los muertos" which by their drug murder count and the black virgin is a HIT !

But then the church always excepted the mix of other religions a classic example of that is saneria the early church of Rome in the DR in order keep membership up secretly condoned voodoo as a result me have santeria a mix of voodoo and Catholism the worship of saints / demons / the dead and entities.

I don't believe the church ever stood up and publicly denounced it, maybe a reader can correct me on this subject.

Ask.........Nicky ?

Thanks for the info. I never heard of that, has the Pope gone public.

Then It's like America's version of "spring break" where anything goes minus dressing up like demons.

How many years has the catholic church voiced against this festivity ?

I also wonder how many practicing Catholics avoid this festival all together being there is such a large population of Catholics in the DR ?

I remember my youngest son 7 years ago on vacation freaked when he saw that full dress demon custom hanging at Las Americas airport and was afraid to board the plane on the way back.

Thanks I feel enlighten.

Well although the Church has been addressing this for more than 20 years the carnival is embraced by the vast majority of the population, as it really does not have the unleashed sexual behaviors that you will see on Brazil for example, that is one of the reasons why the catholic church critizices less and less this, the other one would be that the new generations that were borned from 1980s, 1990s live on a totatlly different reality and the church as an institution has lost most of it's influence, for example, i'm catholic but i have serious dissagreements with some stuff on the church ... the carnival on La vega has become the main one on the country where there are tours from places far away like azua on the south part

Positiveguy,

By this logic...if you can't beat'um, why not just join'um and live a short, happy make believe life.

What If this virus like all viruses to include the common cold, flu etc..etc..mutate, imagine mutating into a super duper HIV virus where later it could become airborne and catch it by coughing and sneezing or as simple as a mosquito bite.

What ever happened to taking responsibility and changing ones lifestyle for starters, the life you might save may be your own or those you choose to claim and love.

Currently in the U.S there are federal laws that prohibit discrimination of those who are HIV positive working in public places like school, restaurants etc..etc.. yet....God forbid one should be TB, Hepatitis etc..etc.. positive you'll be confined to segregation.

Imagine ever germ in your body attacking you 24/7 with no defense.

The real innocent victims are the children borne through HIV positive mothers.
