Santo Domingo.- With supporters and detractors evenly spread, the country braces for today’s nationwide strike of 24 hours called by leftist organizations, unions, and social, barrio and professionals groups, which has prompted the National Police and the Armed Forces to order all personnel to report to duty on Saturday.
Among the demands its promoters listed Sunday figure the repeal of the recently passed “tax package,” the reduction in the price of medicines, fuels and basic staples; an end to “unrelenting blackouts,” an increase in salaries and the allocation of 4% of the GDP to education.
The barrio group Falpo called on citizens to support the strike and remain calm to the “provocations and machinations” they affirm could come from “intolerant” sectors, to guarantee a successful protest.
Falpo national coordinator Milcíades Geraldo said the call to strike has obtained the most wide spread support of any national protest movement in the last few years.
Social Forum
“The strike is unstoppable and there’s no reverse gear. Everything is ready around the national territory for the people to forcefully expresses their rejection to the actions of the Government headed by president Leonel Fernandez,” said Alternative Social Forum spokesman Jesus Adón, one of the organizations behind the walkout that began 6 a.m. today and slated to conclude at the same hour Tuesday.
Speaking in Independencia park together with National Human Rights Commission president Manuel Maria Mercedes, and other representatives of grass roots organizations which support the protest, Adón said the participant groups are convinced their “plebiscite” will send a clear message to president Fernandez that his actions stoke the disgust of Dominican society.

Viva De Republica , I pray and wish for the Peoples success today, this is a good start I hope the people of the Republic see it through in 2012 , It does not matter who is in govt, as long as they support and adhere to the wishes and best interest of its people. A great Democracy is never perfect , yet the pursuit of it is what makes it such.

PuntaCanaMike, the premise was to stop the tourist money.
The DR government will NEVER change unless the money is removed from the equation. Same with the drug money.
When you only retire a general for known drug connections with pension, it is a failed state. 90% of the population suffers for 10% arrogant morons.

They are trying to provoke the security forces by shooting (bullets), throwing homemade bombs and rocks at police stations. They want dead civilians so the internation media could compare us with the protests in the middle east. These protests happen when we're getting near the elections.

What is the probability of this strike escalating into a major uprising like the "Arab Spring"?
Noticeable is the increase in the list of demands.
All the key requirements seem to be in place: poverty, corruption, the rich getting richer, mega unemployement, a "why not-I've got nothing to lose" feeling among much of the population.
Sky high levels of crime, easy access to weapons, cheap weapons.
An upcoming election that offers the choice of the PRD vs the PLD who have led the corruption over the last 10 years.
And activist students at universities like UASD. who also face unemployement after they graduate.
AND all under the age of 30 have internet access, including Facebook etc.
The message will be clearly sent, especially, if it is done peacefully.
