Santo Domingo.- The carriers Air France and Jet Blue asked the police and the Las Americas International Airport’s security department to halt the theft of their passengers’ luggage in the last few weeks.
Air France’s manager resigned from that post yesterday, after the Police Investigations Department interrogated around 14 airport employees about the theft of several types of merchandise from French airplanes.
Sales and Customer Service manager Maria Esther Callega, quoted by news source listin.com.do, said the airlines were concerned with the theft of objects and precious jewels from their airplanes, which they sell to passengers.
She said the pilfering almost always occurs during the cleaning of the planes, but denied that Air France employees were involved in the robberies.
Last week Jet Blue made a similar request in the wake of complaints from dozens of passengers that their luggage was violated and their belongings stolen.
Both companies sent letters to Airports Department director Arístides Fernandez Zucco complaining of the lack of security and increasing thievery in and around the airport during the last few days.
The wave of thefts has also reached the terminal’s perimeter, a section of which was carted away by unidentified burglars.

...and this is new current events to Las Americas officials? Are you kidding me? What a joke! Quite a bit of individuals in the Air France and Jetblue organizations in Las Americas are corrupt. For things to improve, officials of Air France and Jetblue will have to take drastic measures to eliminate the corruption. What are the chances of that happening? Answer, nil!

While the Dominican Republic still has a lot of people with morals, we are a country full of idiots who all they do is steal. In a way, it's the gov's fault! The gov is the first one stealing, rising the prices like no other, people automatically go on survival mode! The other thing, our gov always let ppl get off easy. If we had consequences for actions, starting with the president, this would be a different place.
We have the idea that if you don't get caught it's ok, that's where we go wrong. I'm really embarrassed by my country. There's no escape for honest people in the DR, that's why so many people leave and try to have no connection with the DR whatsoever.

This is nothing new. During the Balaguer gov't the same thing happened to me. I was about 16 years and flew into Las American Int'l on either Eastern or Dominicana, can't really remember which. But as soon as went to claim my bags, it could not be found. Spent a whole day trying to solve the problem, filling out forms and talking to airport staff. Eventually my bags showed up a few days later, but with half the items gone.
I learned my first lesson, always fly light and take carry-on only. But now the airlines want to charge you for every piece of luggage and force you to check-in all bags at the counter. Either way you will get screwed no matter what, one way or another. Next time, I am flying NAKED. On second thought, not a good idea, I can get arrested or a horny bastard might want to screw me too. OUCHHH !!!!

Hundreds of thousands don't work or study
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has released some interesting data on the young people of the Dominican Republic as part of the celebration of World Population Day. The most revealing statistics are the facts that 29% of young people are unemployed, 50% are high school dropouts and nearly 700,000 are not in school or in employment. These figures are based on estimates by the Dominican Republic Ministry of Labor.

Education to go with breakfast cereal
The Ministry of Education plans to change the school breakfast program from bread and cakes to breakfast cereal, and the news has the country's small bakers up in arms.
The head of the Small Bakers Union, Hector Delgado, told El Caribe reporters that the bakers comply with the ministry's requirements and that they do not understand this treatment.
Delgado pointed out that the small and medium-sized bakeries that supply the breakfast program for the nation's public schools also provide 60,000 direct jobs that would be endangered if the Ministry switches from bread and cupcakes to breakfast cereal.
The head of the Small and Medium-sized Business Confederation also noted the negative effect such a measure would have on employment in the sector. He said that the small and medium business sector provides 28% of the nation's GDP and the fact that most of the nation's workers

This is what you get when your justice system is a joke. Almost anyone can be bribed if you are caught doing something illegal. In the end the airlines get blamed and people don't want to come and spend any money here. Nothing new. This is just how are system works and how we train our people. Do whatever you like and if you are caught maybe you lose your job.

This is a strange story because surely all the duty free items that Air France has to sell should be well and truly locked up and for transit passengers they should take everything with them as they leave the plane .
If the same thing happens with JetBlue then it is with passengers transiting and leaving luggage in the plane ...all passengers are advised against that . I have never been offered any duty free items with JetBlue
I have found SDQ to be a great airport with checks on luggage labels as you leave and that is rare in the world airports where you are always worried that some one will go off with your bag
Now, the perimeter fence robbery is another story and is a total disgrace but has nothing to do with luggage.
The problem again is that when someone complains about a bag losing some contents , who will investigate and prosecute ??? And if the passenger is a foreigner who can not stay in the DR and go to court , the thief is likely to go free.
