Santo Domingo.- An entire group of 61 Dominicans accused of poaching in Bahamian waters pleaded guilty to charges of illegal fishing in a court of that island nation yesterday, new source Bahamas Tribune reports.

It said the Dominicans were charged possession of prohibited spear guns, possession of prohibited air compressors, possession of groupers weighing under three pounds and possession of crawfish during the closed season.

“In the first of two cases, 11 Dominican poachers aboard the "Lil Lamb" on Wednesday, July 13, admitted to having in their possession 12 spear guns, 16 air compressors, 3,075 pounds of crawfish, 3,822 pounds of grouper, 798 pounds of margaret fish, 1,882 pounds of parrot fish and 280 pounds of mixed fish,” the Web site said.

A fine of $500 dollars or spend six months in prison sentence for 9 of the 11 crewmen, while the captain was sentenced to pay a $50,000 fine or spend one year in prison.

“The Dominican crewmen found aboard the second vessel, "Don Emmy", were given the same sentence as their counterparts, although the captain's fine in this case was $25,000,” Bahama Tribune reports, adding that the vessels, catch and everything else found onboard were confiscated.

Good, that will teach them. I bet that captain wished he was fined 50 dominican minimum wages instead of that 50,000 dollar fine

lots of very young guys are hired to work these boats, for years the fish store on the colon in pop had a few fishing boats that be would send out to other island and catch what ever u can.most of these boys had never even been on a boat before in their life time, but they wanted to try and make some money to help their families.i used to tell them stay far away from this fishing boat, no good will come from it some listen some did not.
most of them dive for the lobster and spare fish, many places in florida u are not allowed to spare fish or lobster as in the bahamas.
god knows how many of them never made it back to pop???
these so-called fihing boats do they have life jackets? do they fire extinguishers on board? is the capt of these boats license? and by who?
are these vessels go though like in the states a coast guard inspection?
are boats seaworth?
and the dr tourists people say the "best diving and fishing is in the dr"? really?

like to bet a weeks salary many young guys working on these boats have no idea where they are fishing or that they are breaking any laws. they are just trying to make a few dollars. in the other case the so-called captain and the owners of the boats know damn well what they doing.
if the fishing is so good in the dr. when why are theses boats for years now traveling over to the bahamas and other islands to fish?

answer this question mr. tourist minster please?

when the coast guard nailed the dr. vessel a few weeks ago they had over 5,000 lobster in their hull. man thats a lot of money.
lobster on the wh.sale market are going around $12- $14 lb.in florida now
the folks from china are buying them up live and shipping them back to china.
the year before they got involved in this buying of lobster the price was a very low $3lb.
thats the lowest it ever has been.

u steal lobster in the fl keys your going to jail and not for a few months. few months ago they caught two big time lobster pouchers they are sent to a florida state jail for 5years.
their lucky this happen in the bahamas not key west fl.

The fish in the D.R. are cleaned out. The only fish left are parrot fish, class 3.
No conservation and everybody living for the moment never thinking of tomorrow.
What better example do we have than our neighbors in Haiti if we don't practice sustainable everything.

BY ADAM LINHARDT Citizen Staff

Two 23-year-old Bay Point men are facing a maximum five years in prison and a $250,000 fine after conspiring to poach more than $150,000 worth of lobster last year.

John Buckheim and Nick Demauro, whose sentencing hearing has not been scheduled, averted a federal jury trial Tuesday by pleading guilty to conspiracy to poach lobsters. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped two charges that could have added at least 10 years to their sentence.

@easyrider,

What does Dominican poachers have to do with Haiti? It's hard to sustain anything when you have bare minimum.
