Santo Domingo.- The country is on maximum alert for Hurricane Irene, which is expected to hit the eastern/north eastern shores of the Dominican Republic around midday.

The storm, which lashed the neighboring island of Puerto Rico last night, was upgraded to a category 1 hurricane overnight but its course has turned north-northwestwards. Irene thus becomes the first hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic season, according to the United States National Hurricane Center.

Although the eastern coast and the Samaná peninsula are likely to feel strong effects in the shape of wind gusts and heavy rainfall, the current projection is for the storm to continue on a north-northwest course.

In response, the Ministry of Education has announced that all schools will be closed today Monday. Many flights have been canceled and the military confined to barracks at the service of the emergency services.

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) declared a red alert for the provinces of La Altagracia, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Peravia, San José de Ocoa, Azua, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Barahona, Pedernales, San Juan de la Maguana, Independencia, Bahoruco, Monte Cristi, Puerto Plata, Espaillat, María Trinidad Sánchez, Samaná, Duarte and the National District. Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, Monseñor Noel, La Vega, Santiago, Elías Piña, Dajabón, Valverde, Hermanas Mirabal and Santiago Rodríguez are under yellow alert.

Jim, what is brainless about it? Just because u don`t care? Ricardolito is right....it is a nasty feeling to wait what gonna happen, IF something gonna happen....there is a possibility that it hits hard, it least hard enough to kill people...no reason to jump on people with different opinion and feelings.
Here in POP it`s kind of wired too. sun comes and goes, sky changes between blue and dark grey, short hard rainfalls but just for a couple of minutes and then it calms down again to no movement at all...

Right now in Santiago it is just raining - and not a lot of wind. Amazingly, the electricty has not cut off. I called colmado two hours ago in anticipation of the storm and they have not arrived yet - donde esta mi cerveza?

For those who are interested ,,,the latest plotting of the hurricane shows it is heading more to the north of the DR in Higuey and la Romana ,the forecast is for strong winds rather than hurricane winds ,,so button down in the north ,.
Thanks Blondy for the support but we all know here that Jim H always is bashing the DR or its residents ,,only he knows the reason but I suspect he has some inferiority complex

Yeah, that`s what the news say: it will affect just the north coast...we`ll see...still changing between hard rain and sun here in POP...not much wind

As of 2PM here in Luperon we have a steady rain no wind yet. From the forecast they had it going over us now well out to sea. These storms are afraid of the D.R.

Hurriucane Irene will contunue its path N-NW, the worst that will happen is huge storm surges along the North coastal areas from Samana - Montecristi. My biggest concern is Nagua.
