Cotui, Dominican Republic.- Opposition PRD party presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía on Sunday the urged rice growers to not pay their debt with the Agricultural Bank, and pledged to cancel it if he wins the 2012 elections.

Mejía, in a provincial and municipal campaign rally, also promised to make the region a strong farming center. "Don’t pay the debt, I commit myself to cancel it once I win, I’m going to make Sanchez Ramirez an agricultural power and I’m going to create the conditions to generate jobs that benefit youngsters," the ex president said.

When asked about an alleged dirty campaign began by ruling PLD party presidential candidate Danilo Medina, Mejía said he’s willing to conduct a clean one, although he’s “prepared to respond in the terrain they choose, if they fire at me, I fire back."

Agree with those who view this as some low populous nonsense that if acted upon will only serve to extend the disingenuous and corrupting practices that modernization is thought to correct.

To those who say this is right, one question:

How would such policy decisions, rescinding debts, help the Dominican Republic's modernization?

He really wants to set the good example. If you do not like your debt, don't pay. It is the mantra of his government. Heaven forbid if he gets elected. The IMF and other lenders will keep more than an arm's distance from his government.

In Nicaragua, President Ortega told the agricultural sector to not repay their loans. The result of that was that the banking system stopped lending money to the agricultural sector, preferring to lend for commercial loans (mortgages and cars). The agricultural sector has enough trouble obtaining credit - it does not need a "no pago" reputation, which would destroy all access to credit.

The only difference between Hipo and Leo is that Hipo says what he thinks and he really does it. Leo is doing the same favor to his supporters all the time without mantioning it publicly. DR is the country with most public employees but with the worst public services which means that there are thousands of people on the payroll who have never entered their offices :)

End of the line is that no matter who wins the country loses. As long as the corruption rules this country it really doesn't matter who gets elected.

In case you hadn't noticed UK has 'AAA' credit rating.
Riots are part of history and have often led to political change.

The example of God instigating plagues in Egypt to bring about desired action by rulers ; letting the children or Israel go ; has been followed by oppressed peoples taking direct action throughout history.

A commentator on the UK riots and the solution.
We need the courage to be rational and not vengeful in eliminating those causes: inequality, poor urban environments, underemployment. We need empathy and humanity to deal with those people who are the symptom of our problems in a way that will rehabilitate rather than further victimise them.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment....g/24/riots-reason-not-rage-norway

If the farmers are having such problems that they don't repay the loans as part of direct action then the underlying causes need to be analysed and solutions sought.

Ireland may have to write off 10 billion in debt. I don''t see any problem in a small country writing off a small amount of farm debt. Its only a short time till a new government gets elected.
After all the farmers produce a valuable service producing food and inputs ( gasoline, fertilizer etc. ) have risen at an unprecedented rate due to huge uncontrolled demand from the US.
"
From Debt forgiveness is inevitable, accept it

Billions in mortgage debt will have to be written off as irrecoverable, which of course means debt forgiveness. Kelly’s figure excludes unsecured consumer debt. The central bank has pencilled in €2.2bn in losses

Actually of course credit card companies in the US write off billions in debt and people in trouble are advised by firms that advertise on TV to stop paying or only pay off

Hern and abc. ... your comments are interesting ... an explanation of the strategy the opposition has for all farmers would be a better transparency position then just the rice growers not paying the debt.

Strongest position would be to tell the farmers to continue paying on the debt and if papa is elected he could then cancel the debt and retroactively refund debt payments back to the farmers say for two years. ... leverage the law and rules politically don't undermine the very system itself. ...

Federico D, here is my take on the matter, for what it is worth. Hippo retains the option to renegotiate the debt, or try to have it forgiven, through proper, orthodox channels. there is nothing wrong with that. however, to state publicly, to a very gullible and malleable population, that they should dishonor their obligations, in a renegade gambit, undermines whatever little personal discipline there is in this country, and, Lord knows, it is in very short supply.
