Santo Domingo.- The South American drug cartels’ use of freighters to send cocaine to Europe using Dominican Republic ports concerns the Drugs Control Agency (DNCD), which has seized nearly two tons in just eight months.
The East Haina and Caucedo Multimodal ports and the airports led in the amount of seized cocaine valued at 600 million euros, calculated from Europe’s street value of 150,000 euros per kilo.
The change has spurred the authorities to probe why narcotics traffickers have opted for Europe instead of the U.S. as the final destination for their "material."
Local authorities say one possible reason could be the tougher controls in the U.S., or the fact that the drug fetchers a higher profit in Europe.
The most recent confiscation came Monday night with 100 kilos headed to Barcelona; 40 packages seized Sunday in Caucedo, headed for Palermo; 90 packages in Las Americas International Airport sent to Madrid last week, and 419 kilos consigned to Huelva, Spain, at Haina.
At the start of August the DNCD seized 212 kilos in a container headed to Italy, whose authorities recently detected one ton of the drug which had left from Dominican Republic.
Adding to the major confiscations are the drug “mules” arrested prior to boarding flights to Europe, with their stomach of body orifice packed with condoms full of cocaine, weighing as much as one kilo.

Now someone must take the time to understand how a TON of drugs arrived in DR in the first place. If the air interdiction is works as reported that means it is sent by fishing or pleasure boats to the island. Ask the US government for a drug interdiction blimp to be stationed on the south coast and use the new patrol vessels to stop the boats. Sink everyone found to contain drugs like you do with immigrant smugglers.

guess the dr. government to one degree or other has stripped their people of their basic dignity they deprived them of a formal education and never allowed them to develop anywhere near their full potential,and as the world has become hyper connected, it's become obivious to many dominican citizen's just how far behind they are,not only to the united states, but to china,india and parts of sub-saharan africa..
be careful when u vote your kids future and maybe their lives depend on your vote.

Do these freighters have the drugs inside when they dock at the ports in DR , and if not how do the drugs get into the Dominican ports ..As we are told that the traffic by air has been greatly reduced I imagine that all ships from drug exporting countries entering Dominican ports should be searched

Ricky not a chance ....so few of the containers are searched anywhere that it is hit and miss with the traffickers .....and one hit negates 10 misses ?...in the world of supply and demand I dont think so

@danny00,
Why always so negative? Isn't a drug bust a good thing? The reason why people are reading about drugs and Dominican Rep., in the same sentence, is because something is actually being done. Why do I get the feeling that you are always rooting against Dominican Rep. and its people?!

The reason DR is very attractive and is a safe transit point for fine Peruvian Flakes is because for a trafficker if his shipment ran into a problem in DR his biggest concern is who does he pay or who does he kill. Everything will be workout with the understanding of every now and then a shipment and pawns must be sacrifice to please the gringos to the north.
