We reluctantly publish the photo of Jose Silvestre's body from elnuevodiario.com.do, in an effort to make sure that our readers understand the severity of the crime, and join the demand for justice.
LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic.- Amid deception and cries for justice, dozens of mourners yesterday visited the residence of the slain journalist Jose Silvestre, to bid farewell.
Most of his 11 children, relatives who live abroad, neighbors, colleagues, friends and even some government and city officials and police agents walked past his coffin prior to services in the La Romana Funeral Home and the 4 p.m. burial in the municipal cemetery.
Witnesses say four men grabbed Silvestre off the street and pushed into a Ford Explore SUV Tuesday morning near his house next to the Hotel J & A, where he kept his car, and his body shot three times found hours later near the town Sabana del Soco, San Pedro province.
The journalist edited the magazine La Voz de la Verdad (voice of the truth) and headed a TV program by the same name in La Romana, where he constantly denounced the authorities’ alleged link to drug trafficking.
In fact on the day of his murder Silvestre was slated to appear in a San Pedro court to face libel charges filed by La Romana prosecutor Jose Polanco, whom the journalist accused of nepotism and corruption, to the point of comparing the official to an alleged drug baron.
"Toño Leña is a suckling baby compared with that prosecutor," the slain journalist said of Polanco, in reference to the drug trafficking defendant Ramon del Rosario Puente, know as Toño Leña.

The community including the world community should stay on top of this crime and demand a transparent criminal investigation. Mr. Sivestre works should be honored with the bringing of justice to his killers.

There goes the forensic evidence if any. Oh, I forgot this is the Dominican Rep., were a cop has to go to a colmado and rent air time for a computer , so to access international criminal files..

disgraceful. I'm Dominican, but I'm embarassed at how low this country is sinking.....this is getting beyond banana republic status....it's a shame there doesnt seem to be even one honest leader who would atleast do something, or any thing right without ulterior motives and benefits to him/her or their friends & family. What a coincidence the murder occurs on the day he's supposd to be in court......what an alibi if Silvestre's allegations are true; and with this country and the prevelance of drugs, I wouldn't doubt it. If the international press community doesnt get involved this will go the way of another unsolved murder.

The world should come down on this piece of shit country with both heels.
All people in authority in the DR are scum sucking transparently corrupt thugs.
Once these scum suckers control the media and NO one speaks out then it is a dictatorship.
Failed State.

Thank you MannyTav. It is good to hear those words "I am embarrassed".
I myself am embarrassed by what the US has passed as a law to fight the fiscal deficit. Without embarrassment no one really cares. So I have already emailed my Government morons as to how childish they are and I would fire them if I could.
I will vote against anyone who is currently in office.

wouldn't be surprised if the murderers were at the funeral too.

Yes, it IS very serious, tragic and disturbing. And I'm glad that such graphic pictures now come with a disclaimer and not just thrown up without any thought.
May justice come swiftly.

The Dominican Republic is only ten years behind the conditions that we see in Haiti. Leonel is the evil step-brother of Republicans and Democrats of the United States.
There is no justice in RD.
