President Fernandez in Gualey.
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez promised yesterday to heighten public safety in the capital’s sprawling barrios, to fight the crime affecting its inhabitants, in the resumption of his “popular dialogues.”

The chief executive made the pledge after listening to the community leaders from the La Zurza, Capotillo, among others, in the impoverished barrio of Gualey, and received documents listing their needs.

“I promise that those needs presented at this time will be studied personally by me. We’re going to classify those requests, we’re going to work personally with the different officials of those areas that require an intervention for the solution of the problems,” he said in the gathering of representatives from La Ciénaga, Las Cañitas, Los Guandules, 27 de Febrero, Villas Agrícolas, Espaillat, Gualey, 24 de Abril, Luperón, La Zurza, Guachupita, Capotillo, Simón Bolivar, María Auxiliadora, Villa Consuelo, Villa Juana, Villa María, San Carlos and Villa Francisca.

Fernandez, in addition to instructing the officials and making them responsible for providing a response to the problems which the community posed, announced frequent visits to each of those barrios to follow up on the works. “You’re going to start seeing me personally more frequently in these barrios. It is not only this gathering today.”

“Today is the start, but you’ll see me in Gualey, Guachupita, 27 de Febrero, La Cienega and all parts, because I will be personally watching the fulfillment of the different officials,” he said.

Fernandez said with the government’s effort, the work of the communities and the churches, will show the world that the country was able to defeat the onslaught of a severe economic crisis.

Start by giving back all the monies you took under the table and stolen by your government

If he needs funding take all the botellas off the government payroll and redirect the funds to the barrios.

Note: a 'botella" in dominican speak is a person, a political crony, on the government payroll. He has a title and does absolutely nothing to earn it other than to politically support his godfather. He has no office, no co-workers. All he needs to know is when and where to pick-up the check.

A programme to reduce poverty has to:
1. Recognize the truth.
The truth is that 99.99 percent of the officials are corrupt.
The truth is that most people, not just in the bario's of the Capital, are poor.
The fake contracts of the IMF and Worldbank are a drain for the country, not an improvement, privatising companies by stealing them from the owner, as the IMF wants, does not work and has not worked in any developing nation, worldwide.
2. Solve the problems, do not go around them.
SACK corrupt officials, do not give them another position, and confiscate their wealth, that was stolen anyway!
Fight poverty nationwide, not just in the Capital.
Cut the contracts and contacts with IMF and Worldbank, untill they stop medling in national affairs of the country (they never will, because they are corrupt neo-colonial pocket fillers (and sexually not right in the mind).
Do something about it Mr. President, before it is too late!

So after 8 years, he is just now finding out about the problemos?

Well, I guess he has to set a good foundation for his wife's VP bid.

A couple of years ago, Prez LF came to the US to meet with Rangel and push back on a new US tobacco tax because the DR was a poor country. Prez LF wanted to leverage his friendship with Rangel and kill the bill via personal pressure.

However, we talked with the congressman's office and gave them talking points for Prez LF to get his own house in order on all the problems in my Santiago barrio (no street lights, dirt roads, Tigeres crime & drugs, new youth addictions etc).

All of a sudden, we got street lights, paved roads and frequent police visits and ride throughs and even an official impromptu visit from Prez LF himself who had never been close to this barrio in all his years in office.

These politicians are just camillion's that change colors with the wind, for their own survival and best interests.

Simple solution to many problems is to create a work force dedicated to cleaning up the island of trash and debris that litter the roads and countryside. Thousands of people hired in each area to make the island more presentable to foreign investors and tourists who are fearful about entering half the country.
Second step would be to hire more police for the areas and actually arrest those who are criminals.
Third would be to provide proper water, sewer and electrical lines to the area and create a urban plan for the area.
Fourth EDUCATE the people to a higher standard and provide them with a way out of the barrio.

@sweetbabyj,
Good ideas, there is a 'but' however.

If this government cleans and paves all streets in the country, would hire police from other countries (and sack all local thugs in uniform), get all services in place and working, And educate the people, there would be too many educated people. They would not accept the lies from this government, nor from any future president, be it Danilo with Mrs. president, or Papa (potatoe?) or any other corrupt guy from the two so called socialist parties.

That would mean we will have to start a new political party, from the people, by the people and with the people!

Wait a minute, it IS a good idea! Who else wants to help here?
