SANTO DOMINGO. - Interior and Police Minister Jose Ramon Fadul on Tuesday announced heightened controls in all of the country’s ports and airports against gun smuggling.

The official revealed that the large number of illegal weapons in the country enter via those routes, and not across the Haiti border as many believe. “It is not in fact across the border that the large flow of illegal weapons is entering Dominican territory.”

Fadul, speaking before delivering 2.1 million pesos to relatives of three agents who died while on duty, said Interior and Police has seized thousands of illegal guns and urged airports, ports, customs and border zone authorities and the companies which use containers to apply stricter controls and prevent weapons trafficking.

After acknowledging the high number of illegal arms and gun shops, the official said they are being investigated and those which don’t have permits will be shuttered.

I wonder how long has this problem been ignored ?

In the end the only real control would be LEGAL firearms transactions....I hope I'm wrong.

How are they illegal?

The right of self-protection is an inalienable right.

I have said it before and I will say it again....The D.R. is a Socialist State quickly converting into a Fascist one!

Gun shops? I didn't know there were any. We need to ban the sales of guns to everyone except those that are licensed by the state.
Anyone caught without a permit, should get at least a year in Najayo.

I say buy all the guns you want. Just make sure to sell the bullets at $5000.00 per.

All firearms should be sold LEGALLY considering a very large % of crime is committed with stolen and illegal obtained firearms.
Most crooks prefer the machite, knifes etc..
I say any one caught with a stolen or unregistered firearm....throw the book at them.

Years back I came close to buying a 9mm 14 shot with permit to posses and carry lock 'n' loaded, ammo, holster, range time and safety course for around $1200 usd the only problem was I could not bring it state side and if I did buy one who would I leave with.

Bringing a U.S registered firearm into the DR is nearly IMPOSSIBLE. One first needs a letter of approval from a high ranking police officer, tax, lic. & registration fees, background check [Interpol] a 30 day hold plus a 3 day storage fee at your local police dept. and massive paper work with gov. and customs officials prior to bringing the firearm into the DR.

Bottom line is save yourself the bull sh-- buy one in the DR LEGALLY.

WHY MAKE IT EASY FOR EVERY NUT JOB TO CARRY A GUN?

ABOUT 10-12YEARS AGO IN THE DR THEIR WHERE AND I SAY THEIR WHERE?
THEY THE 3 DOMINICANS WHERE FIGHTING OVER WATER RIGHTS ON THEIR LAND, ALL CLAIM IT WAS THEIR WATER THAT WAS RUNNING THOUGH THE PROPERTY'S. LONG STORY CUT SHORT ALL 3 PULLED OUT THEIR GUNS AND KILLED EACH OTHER.
TRUE STORY. NOW NONE OF THEM HAVE THE WATER DO THEY?[NOR THEIR LIVES}
BUT WONDER IF THEY DID NOT HAVE THE GUNS WHERE THEY WOULD BE TODAY?

Danny00,

Not everybody should own a gun....or a car, knife, machete, baseball bat, a straight razor etc..etc..

But considering how many criminals, nuts and drug users and dealers own them and USE THEM !

I'm sure had the these two land owners felt the police, law, courts and a sense of justice was in place they might gone that route.

I wonder if not guns then maybe shopped up in little pieces for shark bait. How about a 100 cc of Michael Jackson for a quick knock [quiet and unnoticed] out then do their dirty deed.

Jose7777,

I take it 7 is your lucky number.

"1st get a real police Dept." in the DR ? Maybe a real dictator with full power over the people like in Cuba, still no guarantee against corruption even by Gov. officials.

I still say if the laws were enforced 100% with the notion NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW maybe there will be hope.

It is any wonder why Dominicans take the law into their own hands ?

"Then get rid of all arms" I can see it now a country where the only people armed will be police and the military why I'm sure few will feel safe...sounds more like people control to me.

They [the Gov.] can't even control the drug flow and the black market.
