Santo Domingo.- The Chamber of Deputies Justice Commission on Sunday announced amendments to more than 75 articles of the Penal Procedural Code (CPP), among them to allow temporary imprisonment only for those who commit serious crimes. Also included is not to seek conciliation for cases of domestic violence and an amendment to allow the incarceration of lactating women.

The legislators, who gathered the entire weekend in Puerto Plata to review the articles one by one, and discuss the various proposals to modify the CPP, in the wake of a wave of rising violent crimes.

The deputies said temporary incarceration for those who commit serious crimes is the best contribution from a harsher CPP.

Also to be introduced as part of the initiative is a new paragraph to the article on flight risks, which establishes that the Justice Ministry will be forced to ask the judge to dictate temporary incarceration against those defendants whom have prior records.

And much will depend on what is regarded as "serious crimes" According to the decision of one judge, reported on here a while back, the murder of a women in the Dominican Republic is not serious. Makes me wonder what is in that case?

Take off parole in case of violent crimes.

30 years is OK if it is served.

Oh, and make sure the time is served in a prison, not a suite.

Hey, L-F and others:

You should have done this long time ago, imagine this: for those who are good person, they will not commit crimes anyway regardless of how severe the penalities is, but for those bad guys, it will help to stop less cimes.....
