BARAHONA. – Barahona province senator Eddy Mateo Vasquez announced Friday that a forum in October will evaluate the reasons behind the failure of the initiatives to develop tourism in the Southwest. “The forum is going to be a historical evaluation because the initiatives to motor Barahona’s tourism development of have failed.”

The legislator railed the Ministers of Tourism for despite their many promises of works for the city, they’ve not only haven’t fulfilled any, but haven’t began any either.

He cited Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia’s pledge to invest RD$120.0 million in the city’s Malecon, but have yet to see any effort to benefit the zone. “Also announced was a cableway from Santa Elena to Punta Inglesa beach and nothing has been fulfilled by the Minister of Tourism.”

The ruling PLD party lawmaker added that he regrets that some of those promises haven’t been kept despite having been made in this Administration, also of the PLD.

if the chinese can go to Macao, why travel half the way around the world for casinos that are probably inferior?

More ecotourism will be a great addition to the DR. Awesome beaches in Samana and Punta Cana, red zones in Boca Chica and Sosua, big cosmopolitan cities in Santo Domingo and Santiago, and ecotourism in the southwest with hills, crocodiles, sand dumes, lakes and the Bahia de las Aguilas....all within just a few hours drive.

big casino may be the answer. Atlantic City and Las Vegas are way down and if the airport offered tax free flights and the casino taxes were made competitive the area could be the local answer to Macao.

wow abc first time you have a good idea ever in this forum , I actually like that idea but they would have to clean the streets up first .

"There are no casinos in China and they could get bored with Macao.
Also many expatriate Chinese in Europe, USA."

Have you ever been to Macao? The only type of person who would get bored in Macao wouldn't be interested in going to the D.R. either.

Barahona belongs to the narcos and their politikero friends.

No development there in this lifetime.

Can you put political transparent corruption as the #1 reason it will never happen?

Oh, hell no, transparent corruption is your natural born right.

A plan that incorporates Eco-tourism, with middle-class to upper-class condominiums/housing, golfing facilities, agriculture, etc., would yield better results. Casinos as a linchpin for development would be too speculative and unwise.

Go with the environment: it has beautiful beaches, an interesting topography, is sparsely populated. Use these to anchor a well thought out plan of development.

Are there any deep water ports? If so consider enticing the Chinese to invest in a Super-port facility. Panama is expanding her Canal and larger ships, with greater loads and increase traffic will pass through her water way, so a Super port facility located in the heart of the Caribbean might just be a worthwhile gamble for an interested party.
