Santo Domingo.- Interior and Police minister Jose Ramon Fadul admitted Tuesday the presence of illegal gun shops where civilians can buy police and military equipment and uniforms and pledged to conduct a census, “to proceed against the illegal ones.”

The official, quoted by newspaper El Caribe, specified however that that equipment should be sold only to military institutions, but noted that there are gun shops that are authorized to sell hunting gear. “But they cannot provide equipments that has the same design as the uniforms of the military units, that’s where there’s the big difference.”

Police Chief

When asked about civilians who use military uniforms, National Police chief Jose Polanco said the State needs a “legal re-engineering” with legislature to punish those who impersonate soldiers or police.

“The State has sanctioning elements, but it doesn’t have a legal structure to base those sanctions on. Then we don’t do anything by arresting a person who usurps functions just a short time and is going to be released and continue the same criminal actions. That’s the reason, this must form part of Dominican’s Republic improved security architecture because the Police is only an element in the entire system,” Polanco said, but didn’t know if those who’ve pose as military have been drastically punished.

What part of this Flintstone government doesn't show "weakness"?

They cannot run a lottery without robbing it blind. I can only imagine the thugs have more weapons than the average good citizen.

The gov't should admit its weakness in everything!. And if so, he should be ashamed and leave the National palace. But then again he doesn;t have any shame.

I'm totally anti-gun. I wouldn't own one here in the US. But I'm seriously considering moving back to DR next June, so what to do? I don't feel comfortable around firearms. I don't want any part of it.
I wonder if there are any "safe" places there where I can go hide over to? what would you do in my place?

Law 309-06 of July 2006 signed by Fernandez made the importation of guns/ammo/parts illegal for individuals.

What that did was increase the black market demand for illegal guns and put the price of legal guns through the roof, making it difficult if not impossible for the common person to arm him/herself.

The National Police chief addressing the nation a couple of days ago addressed law 309-06 saying to the affect that that law MAY contribute to the illegal gun market.

Wake up and smell the coffee! If LE doesn't have a clue of what's happening in the street here is a free one; Law 309-06 made it EXTREMELY DIFFICULT for a person to purchase a gun for self defense. The BAD GUYS know this. They also know where to BUY ILLEGAL GUNS. LE cannot guarantee the safety of individuals, and sometimes are the aggressor.

Anyone that does not have a government sponsored security attache is open target! Those lucky enough to afford a gun, and unlucky enough to have to use it to WILL G

WILL GO TO JAIL!

And my final thought before I get off this soapbox is;

The gun laws, ineffective LE, rampant violence and the non existent political will of president Fernandez to address adequately quality of life issues for the common person WILL cost the PLD the 2012 elections...
