SANTO DOMINGO. - World Bank International Trade Department director Mona Haddad urged the country to diversify its markets to be competitive and rise in the values chain.

The expert spoke on the topic "Managing trade opening" in a video-conference with government officials and local private sector representatives, under the auspices of the Industry and Commerce, and Economy ministries, and World Bank technicians, from their Washington offices.

In the activity, World Bank senior economist Maurizio Bussolo, addressing the "DR-CAFTA (free trade agreement with the United States) and the extensive margin: an analysis concerning business," said Dominican Republic needs a different integration and to sponsor more Free Agreements Trade (TLC), noting that they are an incentive to spur foreign investment.

Bussolo, responding to questions, said the DR-CAFTA has been beneficial for the country and represents a good starting point to be used as experience in future negotiations.

Hassad agreed that the country needs new markets because "we have a neighbor who is growing like Brazil" and stressed that Dominican Republic’s solid macroeconomic foundation is an important factor for trade opening.

As to agriculture, she noted that liberalization benefits producers and lowers the price for consumers.

Modernize, adjust, educate yourself about the market place and plan ahead. The way forward is never certain, but if DR and her people invest their energies and talents accordingly, better future prosperity await.

Diversification is key to balancing an economy. Be it personal, commercial or national.
As the saying goes: "don't put all your eggs in one basket", It jeopardizes personal and/or national security. So, in order to maintain wealth, one must create multiple income streams. When one dries, the others flow profusely.

This is why one needs to maintain several relationships. When one refuses to give it, there'll be others ready and available, thus maintaining sexual security.

The country has so much to offer besides all inclusive resorts- export your agricultural products and in US - if Miller Beer is not pushing Presidente then find another partner- I think that beer could really be as big as Corona if marketed properly - especially Presidente Lite and in my opinion they have the best orange juice I have ever had and the variety of fish and the prices are outstanding - But most importantly EDUCATE your people- uneducated people have to depend on others and that leads to no life - get educated- create and sell - that what makes life better

PS - will you idiots stop posting your shopping web sites- no one cares - this is about DR not your tshirts and other crap your trying to peddle

Is the D.R. exporting coffee to the U.S.? Dominican coffee is the best I have ever had. And I just read there is a coffe crisis in Columbia, with prices rising rapidly in the U.S. The market is available and the D.R. product is second to none.

Yes Perez- RICA is the best OJ I have ever had and the coffee - well I just finished my second cup its as good as Colombian if not better - What frustrates me is here are two products along with Presidente that they could export and it just seems the companies are content with the money they make in DR - they could employee more people in DR if they were to expand there exports to the US and I really believe with the right marketing behind it Presidente could be a huge success in the US - especially if promoted in Las Vegas and New York and having the Presidente girls as the lead out to promote it - you get some bands drinking it and wearing the t-shirts on stage things like that- as much as people hate the US without the US market you will never be truly successful
