Santo Domingo, (COMTEX).- InterEnergy Holding companies, proprietor of Consorcio Energético Punta Cana Macao (CEPM), yesterday announced a joint venture with the company BW Gas for the construction of a new liquid natural gas terminal in the eastern port city of San Pedro de Macorís, with investments that exceed the US$350 million, and is expected to be finished in 2014.
“The terminal will be part of an inclusive logistic solution to bring natural gas to the country and will be the first investment of BW in the Caribbean, company that believes in the future of the Dominican power market,” .
"This announcement is one of the most important developments in the country's energy market in the last decade," said Celso Marranzini, CEO of the State-owned group of power companies (CDEEE).

Currently in violation of the agreement with the IMF;
An electrical system that is strangling business development and stifling foreign investment;

Great, just what this country needs - infrastructure cementing our dependence on imported energy.
Perhaps US$350 million would be enough for a down-payment on a bio-fuel or ethanol-from-sugarcane plant?

Josie,
You constant harping on about the Fernandez Administration has turned into blind rage and is turning people off to your cause.
Every news story posted you turn it into a massive corruption conspiracy. Nobody is going to tske you serious anymore. This is a perfect example.
Unless you have evidence that this LNG terminal won't be built you are best served by staying silent.

No matter how good and plausible the news may be, to many, it's just another airtight case of fraud, deception, or a newfangled way of government stealing from the people.
most subscribers to this board discard it all as BS.-- this is just another election spin--. Can't happen because this is the DR and nothing good and positive could possibly ever take place here. ...Amazing!
To power industries, we must have a cheaper and reliable source of energy. Natural gas fits that bill perfectly, at least for the time being. It makes all the sense in the world to have a private enterprise invest this kind of money into a proven venue that's strategely situated for markets all around the Americas and Europe.

Roy, NG is an imported energy source and the DR will always remain dependent on outside fuels. This news however is very good. Rolando Bunster (EGE Haina, CEPM, and CESPM) knows how to make money. A press release from BW Gas website:
http://www.bwgas.com/pages/sub_pages.asp?p=124This is the only way the old Cognetrix 300MW plant can operate economically. Now there will be two NG suppliers in the DR, AES and soon to be this JV (InterEnergy Holding/BW Gas).

Natural gas still produces CO2 which many claim will destroy the planet. Bi-fuel and renewables are still not cost effective for large-scale base-load power generation. The only cost-effetive, clean and safe option is a properly-built, maintained and run, nuclear power station (using Australian uranium of course).

I do not believe much of the country has intermittent supply due to lack of generating capacity. These are not random black-outs but scheduled rationing in an attempt to get consumers to pay their fair share. This is totally unacceptable for many Dominicans who would rather buy batteries and an inverter. They conserve electricity when running off the inverter, then waste it as hard as they can when the power is on. If the government installed remote (tamper-proof) smart-meters and everyone paid their share, in advance, there would be adequate, continuous supply. Makes sense ... won't happen.
