Port-au-Prince.- Haiti president Michel Martelly said Monday that his priority regarding Dominican Republic is to promote the balance between the two nations, for the island, and not just each country, to finally benefit in that process.
Quoted by news source listin.com.do, Martelly said just like the Dominican Government helps Haiti “maintain the balance” in the current relations on Hispaniola, in the same manner his government will look for that objective for the good of both countries. “Maintaining the balance between Dominican Republic and Haiti it is important.”
The Haiti chief executive, speaking after opening the new Haitian Parliament legislature, stressed the need for balance on the island citing as an example the cholera epidemic which killed nearly 7,000 people in his country, five times more than on the Dominican side. “If in Haiti we have a disease, this is not good for Dominican Republic”
Martelly and Dominican par Leonel Fernandez will simultaneous launch in Port-au-Prince and Santo Domingo Wednesday, a plan to bolster their strategy against the epidemic that exploded in Haitian territory in mid October 2010.

One fifth of 7,000 (Cholera deaths in Haiti) is 1,400 deaths in the Dominican Republic, yet the Dominican government concedes only about 140 deaths. I suspect both are exaggerating, in opposite directions. So that's what they mean by balance, Leo matching Michel's bull@shit.

El Consejo Regional de Desarrollo (CRD) solicitó ayer al presidente Leonel Fernández aprovechar su visita a la vecina nación de Haití para acordar la construcción y puesta en operación de un ferrocarril que comunique a ambas naciones, lo cual permitiría, según las consideraciones de la entidad, lograr progreso humano, crecimiento comercial y desarrollo entre los dos países.
El consejo de desarrollo explicó que los beneficios obtenidos por la vía serían extraordinarios por la celeridad y prontitud que permitiría en el traslado de productos y, además, por ser un medio de transporte terrestre que funciona aún bajo las condiciones de tiempos más adversas.
“Permitiría abrir una nueva etapa en el mercado externo, ya que haría posible por efecto de su celeridad la exportación de productos agrícolas perecibles”, aseguró la entidad.

The legal name for the island is "Santo Domingo" for it is the name used in all previous agreements and treaties signed by both countries.
