LEMONADE, Haiti.-  President Leonel Fernandez kept this promise to the Haitian people after the earthquake of January 12, 2010, and on Thursday delivered the symbolic keys to a university with a capacity for 10,000 students and three buses to transport those who live in distant communities.

In a speech in fluent French and Spanish, Fernandez expressed his satisfaction and of the Dominican nation for having made that commitment a reality and said he hopes the international community can also fulfill its promises to the Haitians after the catastrophic quake of January 2010.

He said today’s ribbon cutting for the Henri Christophe University is a gesture of solidarity that reflects the sensitivity of Dominicans to contribute with Haiti’s reconstruction. “It’s an act of love, it’s an aspiration of progress and well-being for the Haitian people.”

In his speech the Dominican chief executive described that afternoon of January 12 when the quake took place, which despite not causing damage to Dominican infrastructures, did unleash anguish and fear. He regretted the death of the around 250,000 Haitians, among them thousands of students and teachers and the fact that nearly 80 percent of university constructions ere destroyed.

Fernandez said however, that the time has come to pass from tragedy to hope, from pain to optimism and from anguish to joy.

Martelly

For his part Haiti president Michel Martelly thanked Fernandez “for the gift that your country and you have given the Haitian people.”

He said that contribution shows the Dominican Government’s desire to participate in Haiti’s reconstruction effort. “We’re never going to forget that your nation and you supported us at first moments of the catastrophe. This makes us understand that you understand our suffering and hope of a better future.”

While this decision may not be popular among some Dominicans-I personally only have issue with the darn naming of the University for Henri Christophe! Why Fernandez and his people didn't from the get go suggest a different historical personality to so honor is beyond me, LF dropped the ball there! But the salient point is well expressed:

“It’s an act of love, it’s an aspiration of progress and well-being for the Haitian people.”

Kudos to our people and State!

No Telemaco!

Reunification is not on the table, a sensible and mature relationship that facilitates economic development for both nations, however, is certainly so.

Let's be prudent and wise Dominicans about this and not get into some mean spirited attack. It's unworthy and unwise given the many accolades to come to our people from this noble and humanitarian gesture.

This is a great foreign policy gesture, countries have given gifts to the Dominican people as well and vice versa. That is what countries do, give gifts to other countries as a friendship and a gesture of good will. I hope to see Haiti standing tall again oneday and a I hope a strong DR gets stronger. A strong east and a strong west will make hispaniola a force to be reckoned with.

Because in the United States we have a representative Democracy with three coequal branches of Government and before such commitments are made they are vetted through a process of transparent checks and balances.

Although, not perfect it is a system that is light years ahead of the Purple Dictatorship, of essentially one man rule we have in DR!

We know who, for what, when and how our tax dollars are spent.

1. It was not Kristof who went into the former spanish territory......it was the great Desalin; Haiti's founding father.

2. The campus is a gift..and as such Haiti can name it any name they want.

3. The EU provided the funds for DR to build the campus.

4. The high-school like campus should be used as a technical school to teach usable trades and to serve the needs of the new korean industrial zone being built in the north.

I believe the University is name after HenryChristophe because of its location close to CapHaitian where Christophe had his government Seated where he build the famous Citadel and his Sans Souci Palace which was to rival Versailles. At the time.

Although the following article is not directly related to the construction of this project it is still interesting to note that all this "help" is not just out of the goddess of the hearts of the Purple Ones!

More interesting than this story is the fact that Banco Central is now going to get involved in dollars to prevent it's rise in relation to the peso. This artificial, expensive measure will only insure that after the election, whichever bum wins our economy is going in the crapper.

Now for a look at a “Real President” like the one someday hopefully we will finally have in DR:

"Dilma Rousseff and Dominican politics"

"Brazil’s President has purposes, is accountable, reports on her plans, acknowledges the weaknesses of her country, and rather than walk announcing her successes is dedicated to working to minimize its weaknesses, such as poverty or the lack of jobs."

Countries give gifts to other countries, DR has recieved plenty of gifts by the United States and other countries, this is fact. The U.S. has also recieved gifts by other countries. Countries give gifts to other countries as a friendship and goodwill gesture to reaffirm, strengthen allegiance, improve relations. I read a couple different places that DR didnt even fund the project with the money and that the funds were European Union funds. Is this true?

“Juan Bosch’s picture is removed from the University Lie-onel built in Haiti”

"Bosch's political ideas were, at best, unpredictable. He was, at times, a self-confessed Marxist, but often an anti-communist. In the 1970s, his idiosyncratic social democracy gave way to a concept of "dictatorship with popular support" and, in 1973, he broke with the PRD to form the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD). The split was, in part, ideological - Bosch had wanted to boycott the 1974 elections and effectively renounce electoralism - and partly personal, since a more moderate faction, led by José Francisco Peña Gómez, had successfully challenged his leadership.
...

By the 1990 election, how- ever, Bosch had jettisoned what remained of his radicalism to become a born-again neo-liberal and champion of privatisation. He stood for the last time in 1994, but was forced into third place by his former PRD lieutenant, the charismatic Pena Gomez."

Interesting article, thanks, Josean.
It says Leo has been lobbying to get a Nobel Peace Prize (a first for a Dominican).
Is this because someone else beat him the to Secretary General of the United nations gig?
I assume you would support his nomination, provided it is awarded soon and posthumously.
