Canadian vctim's name is Kristal Eslawiski
Santo Domingo.- Two dead, including a Canadian woman, and more than 15 injured, some of seriously, was the result of an accident Tuesday afternoon on the Southern highway (Noviembre 6), just a few meters from the toll plaza.
The accident came when a cement mixer truck hit and dragged a bus full of passengers, killing Santo Mejía, 43, and the Canadian missionary worker, Kristal Eslawiski, 35, both with severe traumas. They were pronounced dead at Marcelino Vélez hospital.
The accident took place when the bus from the city of Baní was reportedly being searched at a military checkpoint prior to arriving at the toll plaza, where it was struck from behind by the truck, dragged it nearly 100 meters, before pushing off the road and down a shallow ravine.
The injured were taken to Darío Contreras Marcelino Vélez, and Centro Medico Real hospitals in the capital.
First responders including Civil Defense and firefighters, as well as the military assigned to the toll helped the victims out of the hulk, whose roof was tore off in the collision.

There are about 2,000 fatalities on Dominican roads every year. It seems they only rate a mention if particularly bazaar or a foreigner is involved.

No action against these bad driving habit will take place until a politicians child, wife, sister ect die at the hands of one of these lunatic drives.....
Let alone the roadwothiness of most vehicles on public road... it sounds all to clear that this truck had little to no brakes......
From: Dominican Republic
My heart goes out to all that died and injured in this accident and their families..
The driver and owner of these unsafe trucks need to have all their truck taken from the road and put up on manslaughter charges..
As a former truck owner/drive myself it makes me sick to see the disgusting state of trucks/buses here... and the way they are driven.....

Roy ..Bizarre ..you spent too long in the middle east
From: Dominican Republic
This does not come as a surprise to me, and I count the days until some brain dead (4.8 average school years) nimrod nails me on the highway between Higuey and La Romana. In the meantime...AMET sits in clusters at non threatening intersections, conversing about baseball, texting and looking for gringos like me...who can give them a little to supplement their income...same for the totally useless G2 monkeys who's sole purpose is to extort money from those who look like they have some...while the flow of drugs enters freely into the east. This will continue until someone in this country takes driving seriously.

The sheer stupidity and recklessness of the average Dominican driver, always male, is horrifying.
Utter and blatant disregard for anything in their way, the fuel trucks and large tourist busses seem to be the worse offenders.
There will never be any solution. The entire culture, unfortunately, is poisoned.
Lucky for me, I saw the DR in the early 70's.

Ricardolito,
Thank you for the correction - yes I have spent time in bazaars in Istanbul. Unlike in the Dominican Republic where I am mistaken for an "Italliano" in need of a motoconcho, they assumed I was Russian in need of some Turkish gold.
Grosero,
Thank you for your advice and correction, but as usual, slow off the mark, and redundant, since WalterPolo had already corrected me, and I had already acknowledged it, ages ago. Naming highways after a date - how systematc and useful! How imaginative!
Now I know you are way out of your depth here, but do try to keep up! And if Australia is a "hole" then what does that make your cesspit in the front of your face?

glad her name has been corrected... closer, at least.
Krista is missed so much already. didn't know her for long, but appreciated her kindness.
my hope is comfort for the mourning, healing for the injured.

Krista was a worker in the harvest field of the Lord. She owned nothing, was paid nothing yet gladly gave her life to save the souls of the D.R. She made her choice to serve knowing full well that no one would celebrate her accomplishments or give her the accolades she so richly deserves, instead she has laid her treasure up in heaven. May God go with you sister, enter into the presence of our Lord.

bbbs53,
Does it not make you doubt the existence of god, or at least a benevolent one? From what you say, she didn't deserve to meet such a fate, and should have been alloed to continue god's good work.

No. God is no respecter of persons. It rains on the good and the evil just the same. She is free and free from, what could be greater? You do not understand the ways of the kingdom or the ways of God or you probably would not have asked it. You think and look at this from a human perspective, she looked at it from the perspective of the kingdom. I know, I heard her say it. Please read at least the new testament, it will give you more questions than answers
