SANTO DOMINGO. – Several Government agencies converged in Boca Chica during a nighttime raid Tuesday, and rescued a 13 and 16 year-old who were being sexually exploited in a bar of the sector La Caleta.

Police agents and Assistant DAs were accompanying Labor Ministry and National Childhood Council (CONANI) inspectors in patrols of the sector, when they learned of the two adolescents who were “working” in a cafeteria, but which was the front for the 12-room brothel, “Pablo Sazon.”

Labor Vice minister Felix hidalgo said measures were taken to protect the minors, who were immediately taken to CONANI. “This operation is part of the Labor Ministry’s actions to eliminate the sexual exploitation of children in Dominican Republic.”

Arrested on the spot were Bernardo Segura Felix, owner of the brothel, and the customer Hansel Samuel, who was allegedly found in on e of the rooms with one of the minors.

Good question, riosm. In some cases, it is the mothers who put their underage daughters up for sale.

A fully funded educational system with enforcement mechanisms to see to it that parents and others are punished if they should engage in parental abuse of minors would fundamentally take care of the bulk of these sad cases in DR. Of course, such a system would require more than 2% of National GDP funding.

Boca Chica has been known for years for having bad reputation for sexual exploitation. Those readers who know the area can understand the environment of lax government enforcement of laws. Enforcement of the laws when it does happen has been selective, especially when only the local authorities are policing the zone as they are inclined to overlook criminal activities, but only to seek gains from it. Enforcement matters in this case as it seems and suggests because labor ministry and CONANI agents were part of the authority mix and the incident was so bold the authorities had no other choice other than make arrests.

The matter regarding the adolescents, you can forget about parent responsibility; because they, the adolescents, are most likely runaways, street children, or suggested above as sold. They have become victims of human trafficking and belong to the highest bidder. Do not be surprised in future reports they are mentioned to be Haitian.

And this is news.....I thought that this goes on all over the island...... at least from P.P. down to Las terrenas.... My wife gives them the evil eye and they know better than to approach me. She does the same thing for those who beg for money while we're relaxing on the beach...... You want to help those who are seeking handouts but if you give to one then 20 more will come....

Yes and Yes. But remember that in addition to your two policies a well organized and universal system of education would create the institutional framework to offer these young teens and all the other children of DR opportunities to gain the academic foundations.

Boca Chica

Situated east from Parque Nacional Submarino La Caleta on Highway 3, and only a five-minute drive east of Las Américas international airport, is the former fishing village of Boca Chica. This was the hot spot for the rich in Trujillo’s days. The wealthy from Santo Domingo would come to their Hamptons-esque getaways, wearing their best and using their posh seaside villas for their elaborate parties.

In the early 1950s, the first major hotel was opened due to the popularity of travel to this area, but by the 1970s, Boca Chica’s reputation with tourists waned because of the development of tourism on the north coast.

However, the lagoon-like waters of the Bahía de Andrés could not be ignored for long, and international (mostly European) travelers started to return by the 1990s.

This financial flux has kept Boca Chica in constant economic doubt, and its reputation has been dragged through the mud by the severe prostitution and tourist scamming that evolved due to tho

This financial flux has kept Boca Chica in constant economic doubt, and its reputation has been dragged through the mud by the severe prostitution and tourist scamming that evolved due to those hard times. Although these illicit activities are on a downward trend, they still exist and are being monitored by the local Politur (national tourism police) office.

Nevertheless, a strange dichotomy exists between the larger hotel chains catering to families and some (but not all) of the small and cheaper hotels catering to the single male travelers looking for the debauchery side of Boca Chica. Many of the small hotels are doing their part in trying to clean up the act of Boca Chica.

It is a indictment of the quality of life in Quisqueya. Poverty is a aphrodisiac. However, what about the prostitutes, young and younger, lining the streets behind the malecon in the Capital??? Very obvious and very available. They are young and younger and the Police are well aware of the situation. Of course it is good for the hotels that line the malecon and thus no action is taken. Thank you LF for making DR the favorite for sexual tourism.

Prostitution is not only legal but is accepted and encouraged.

If a girl is half good looking she will have the family, pimps, “Buscones” encouraging them to go out and bring home the bacon.

Most of these girls are knocked up before they turn 16, no education no future and become desperate to feed their babies and buy new shoes. (lol)

Please tell us where I advocated child prostitution. That's right - you can't because I never have.

What I said was "This atrocious situation will continue until prostitution is legalized, regulated and controlled, as it is in civilized, enlightened countries."

It may be legal here, but is obviously not regulated or controlled, and this is not a civilized county. My argument still stands. Yours fails, dismally. Next time, try to get your thumb out of your bum and your mind out of neutral before blurting out $hit.

The problem is not just prostitution.
In out local hospital, there is a 14-year-old having a baby. About 40% of the mothers having babies are 18 and under. Many have 4 by the time they're 21. One woman is having her 9th baby. Another having her 2nd is HIV positive. These women are not prostitutes.

I agree 100%.

I'll add with.....as I stated many many times in the past the DR is in disparate need of real men/fathers [head of household] who teach their children to respect all woman in general and who take their responsibility in parenting.

The down fall of every society starts in the family, only in the DR I must admit was never far off the ground.

Sad but true.....most Dominican street walkers don't care about a ring and have been known to walk up to tourist couples and ask the man for a BLANK.

I was approached by a prostitute in Boca Chica, in a park, in broad daylight. I was wearing my wedding ring, and with my wife, son and step-father were with me at the time, and this prostitute was nowhere nearly as young or pretty as my wife. They will try any gringo to get a client it seems.

As long as there are tourist coming to 3rd world countries (sorry DR) to prey on the under previlaged for there sex capades, it will never stop. The key here is to lock the pervert for a year in that country, and list him or her on the world wide sexual predators list, and stamp thier passport records with a warning label.

It's very sick just to know that adults can abuse a child (including the religions of the world), and think they can get away with it all the time. This type of shit has to stop!!!!

Well, alright. These comments are all well and proper but what MOST of you are missing is that THIS GOES ON EVERYWHERE AROUND THE WORLD!!!!!!

I was watching a show on OWN "Our America" with Lisa Ling and they were showing us 12 year old protitutes walking the streets of Washigton D.C. with their pimps keeping a close eye on them at all times...

There's been a whole bunch of reports of INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE IN HIGH SOCIETY having "parties" with VERY YOUNG CHILDREN in Washington and Brussels, etc...

12 year old girls are still getting "married off" and have been for EVER.

It is not something that happens ONLY in "3rd World Countries", it is something that HAPPENS.

All of the best intentions and "education" will not fix any of it.

It is like WAR, FAMINE, DEATH, STUPIDITY, etc, etc...

It is part of society.

Some people like boys, some like little girls, some like women, some like men, some like animals...

It is the way of the world and IT WILL NEVER CHANGE.
