Higüey, DR.– Thousands of Catholic pilgrims are arriving at Higuey’s Basilica to celebrate today the Day of La Altagracia, a
manifestation of the Virgin Mary, the greatest religious fervors shared
by Dominicans and Haitians.
For the pilgrimage embarked on every January 21 the authorities have
strict health and safety measures in place to prevent accidents.
Additional Tourism and National Police agents have been assigned to
the region as well as more Metropolitan Transit Authority agents to
control traffic that becomes chaotic, especially today.

In Dominican santeria, Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia is the alter ego of the orisha Ezili Alaila.
And to think the Spaniards had made such good Catholics from the African people they'd kidnapped.

"strict health and safety measures in place" are they kidding? We were nearly crushed to death in the disorganized rabble, going in and coming out again. Where the masses slept, cooked and vigil'd overnight was a strong urine smell. The photo is obviously from a library not on the day. Apart from masses of people, there was a huge ring of black CUVs from Leo's motorcade outside, brass band and the works.
BASTA, you will be pleased to know there were more funny hats than the La Vega Carnival - not only the clergy but also the military.
I had my camera ready but sadly the Virgin Mary didn't appear - caught in traffic no doubt.

I have taken the liberty of computer-translating elemeco's post s follows:
It took place near the city of Cape Haitien today, the January 21, 1691. In it, Dominican-Spanish and Spanish troops from Spain and Mexico, led by quarterback Segura Francisco Sandoval and Castile, killed the governor of Santo Domingo French, Tarin of Cussy, and another six hundred French, some of which had participated in raids on Santiago de los Caballeros in 1659, 1667 and 1690.
On the eve of the battle of January 21, 1691, fighters and seybanos higüeyanos invoked the Virgin of Altagracia to help them emerge victorious.
This invocation and the resounding victory that followed, made the following year from the Catholic Church celebrates the day of Altagracia."
Thank you for the information.

For those Dominican heathens who didn't observe the holiday today, you are in breach of the law, (I'm not sure if it amounts to treason) since it is part of the Concordat between the Dominican Government and the Roman Catholic Holy See, signed by His Excellency Dr. Generalissimo Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina and His Holiness Pope Pius XII (Hitler's Pope).

There was a particularly devout lady in the pew in front of me, deep in prayer as the Bishop droned on - until her cell phone rang. loudly Must have been Jesus because she started chatting excitedly, to the amazement of the devout surrounding her. I did my best to contain my laughter - not very well I confess.

I would personally like to thank the virgin for having my wish (not my prayer) come true. Funny how when dignitaries from the capital and other cities make the pilgrimage east, the road gets fixed!!!
Yes indeed, the sinkholes are paved over on the main highway in between Higuey and La Romana. Now...before you start thinking to trade away your SUV, the pave job was done with typical Dominican detail...some holes are now speed bumps...or so it feels! LOL
Another thank you to the church....no tax collectors dressed in G2 fashion to deal with....praise the virgin!
I went through Higuey on Saturday...expecting chaos. It was one of the easiest drives through the city i have ever had! Coming back today, I expected the town to be a-blow with Styrofoam and paper....none to be seen.
Kudos to those who kept the flow going and the clean up after!

The churches and priests are paid by the taxpayers. If you are baptized you are a member of the protestantic state church and that figure might be as high as 95% percent of the population. I would assume merely 5% go to church regularly, a bit more at christmas time. Those 5% I suppose are the once on the last ride who still believe there is a hell to avoid. By the way, there are billions on this planet living in hell every day of their life probably happy when that ends. The priest here do need a salary, but I am quite sure a lot of them look in the mirror and wonder what the hell they are doing.

All religions are really a different account of babylonian text from babylon which is now called iraq , which was the the first civilization that dates back 1867 BC , christianity is the babylonian religion of sun worship and goddess worship in disguise , or disguise for those who choose not to research it and see the obvious. The babylonian trinity of Nimrod , the father Tammuz, the virgin born son The reincarnated Nimrod; and semiramis , the virgin mother, was transposed into roman belief. It eventually became christianity and the christian Trinity thanks to the emperor constantine in the fourth century. The old testtament is founded on summerian , babylonian and egyptian accounts, edited and rewritten as required, to create a manufactured history .
