Not good! Things are getting VERY serious now. Not that they weren't very serious before...

willom,
Mild quakes happen all over the world every year... Don't they?

I'm not a seismologist, but maybe a number of small releases of energy are reducing the probability of things building up to a big one?

Hopefully these episodes are displacing pressure along the faults and the real big ones are put off for many centuries to come. Hispaniola does not need another major earthquake in 2012. But Nature will adjust itself to her own time table regardless of our best intentions or plans. In the scheme of things, Nature rules.

Atabey, no, God decides.
Ask the experts, his representatives, the church.
Otherwise, what are we housing, feeding, giving them funny hats and paying them for?

Sorry to tell u that in order to release the energy of one magnitude 6 quake, u need 32 magnitude 5 quakes.

u know the song don't worry?
with the 1st responders the dr has and with the training they have behind them and the 1st responders supplies they will carry with them, why worry?
also u also know the dr government u then know that they the 1st responders all of them have certification dont u?

what u need to do if the big one comes is do like the so-called capt of the cruise ship did a few weeks ago, and also what the so-called army in italy did in june of 1943, s....t. 'wave the white flag with your hands up in the air. like they did when the english and american army came face to face with them. [they left their so-called german army buddies to die}.

I can only repeat that for two or three weeks before the big Haiti quake , we were having small tremors on a very regular basis in the east and I was thinking we were in for some thing very big ,,The siesmologist have told us for years that we are between two fault lines so we have always known that but they have not added to our knowledge for years except after the event

Thanks, temetito,
just what I needed to feel safe.
So what do we do?
Continue to barricade ourselves inside out homes at night, so we don't get mugged and robbed, or open everything up so we can get out quickly when the roof starts falling in and the kitchen bursts into flames?

Hell, where did I leave my rosary-beads and injection-molded Jesus on the cross?

Ricky- What exactly do you want from the scientists? Did you want them to pinpoint January 12, 2010 at 4:53 PM local time? Roy clearly answered you in the other article and you came back the same. In 2008, Geologists have meetings in the Caribbean Geological Conference, DR and Haiti to warn us of an imminent 7.2 quake in P-au-P, and SD.

Hey, Earthquakes are not Hurricanes.

MasGrande, I'm glad you asked:

Sam Harris (born 1967) is an American author, neuroscientist, as well as the co-founder and CEO of Project Reason.

He is the author of The End of Faith, which was published in 2004 and appeared on The New York Times best seller list for 33 weeks. The book also won the PEN/Martha Albrand Award in 2005 for nonfiction. In 2006 Harris published his book Letter to a Christian Nation, a response to criticism of The End of Faith. This work was followed by The Moral Landscape published in 2010, and his long-form essay Lying in 2011.

Harris is a well-known contemporary critic of religion, a member of the New Atheism movement, and a proponent of scientific skepticism. He is also an advocate for the separation of church and state, freedom of religion, and the liberty to criticize religion. Harris has written numerous articles for the Huffington Post, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, New York Times, Newsweek, and the journal Nature.

williom.. I would like information saying that a severe earthquake is imminent along a certain fault line and within say a 300 mile range in the next several weeks based on certain information. Prior to the bih quake in Haiti , There were no warnings for haiti and the earthquake folllowed a line to the north from the epicentre near Port au Prince to around the Santiago area ..on a fault line that is totally different to the fault line around Punta Cana Higuey and la Romana where we had been experiencing almost daily shakes.
Now ,,,I do not believe they can predict very much at all uless they were all sleeping or on vacations..The only thing they seem to be able to do is to give warnings about volcanoes

Why is everyone freaking out about quakes? What's the big deal? If you own a penthouse in SD, rent it out; then wait for a big one. If after the shaking, it's still standing, then you know it's safe to inhabit it.
If you own a house in suburbia, re-enforce it with re-bars and concrete. It'll cost you a little, but bring peace of mind. If you're thinking of building a home in the campo, (as I am ), construct it with a 4mt.- deep basement, (for all my wine), and incorporate massive concrete support columns. It'll never come down, believe me. My family's home in East SD is built that way. Guaranteed to stand until the second coming of Christ! ...No quake or hurricane will ever dent it!.. No fuss, no muss.

Ron,
You need to read up on the physics behind earthquake-proof buildings. It is not about making them as strong and rigid as you can. It is about allowing movement and flexing, without coming apart or collapsing. If you don't believe it, look at the photos of the strong, highly-reinforced, pre-stressed concrete bridges that have collapsed during earthquakes.

Roy, You're right. There's rigidity and and there's flexibility. I've read about new-fangled ways to erect buildings to cope with myriad challenges, such as quakes, wind, and all kinds of wheather conditions.
The tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, had to incorporate ways to cope with all this, least of which, was rigidity.
But it works quite well with small structures. Thus: build it solid!!

There's even better advice than "build solid"
"build elsewhere"
Australia is on the other end of the seismological scale. It's called the Great Australian Shield
(also at the other end of the earth I admit)
That's what makes it the best place in the world to store nuclear waste.
Also in the center, there are areas with no people for hundreds of kilometers.
Since the Dominican Republic is bragging about a Guinness Book of World Records stunt, did you know the tallest residential building in the world is the Eureka Tower in my city of Melbourne? It was also voted the Most Liveable City In The World by latest Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Survey.

Unfortunately for you, neither apostasy, heresy nor blasphemy are grounds for deportation any more. Maybe it is considered not in the national interest for telling it as it is?
Thanks, I'll be more careful in future.

Serious as the subject is it saddens me that so many take time to write so much spam.

The truth is that DR is not prepared to handle a tragedy of any kind or quake of huge magnitude. LF will surely be out of the country. If it happens we will be worse off than Haiti. Why? Because we have more to lose.

DR does not have a functioning public health system. We still have major blackouts every day. We still do not have potable water. We still do not have a army or police force that is dependable or trustworthy. We still do not have a working 911 system. We still do not have officials who do what they are paid to do. It would take a disaster of major proportion to emphasize what I just said.

Just imagine Santiago if we get hit? Who will keep order? The police? LOL. Who will rescue the wounded? The ambulances? LOL. Where will they take the woulded? LOL On and on.

It is a very serious problem and I hope readers offer some sane comments

I took a quick little survey in our village yesterday, asking people what causes earthquakes. All but one had no idea what-so-ever. However what was of greater concern, is it did not bother anyone that they did not know and felt no compulsion to go and find out. It is no wonder the government place little importance on education, and the ancient superstitions of Voodoo and Christianity are still practiced here.

CarmenReyes, your points are absolutely valid, however things will not change as long as we believe we are in the hands of Jesus. Why do you think people don't wear seat-belts when they have a rosary dangling from their rear-view mirror and "Jesus loves me" on the windscreen?

You can bet the that when the next big one hits, the churches will exploit it to the full, since it was caused by our disobedience if God (read church).
