Santo Domingo.- The presidential candidate of Dominican Republic’s major opposition party (PRD) yesterday affirmed that he “very positively recognizes and values” the institutional work by the organization’s authorities and its president Miguel Vargas.
Hipólito Mejía’s praise of Vargas comes after months-long standoff, and as recent as Monday affirmed that the PRD rank and file would “run over” the party president, for his alleged refusal to join the campaign.
“These actions have developing positively, altogether, in the last trade union elections, as well as in the work that is carried out, day to day, with the Central Electoral Board and in the organization and staging of the conventional process to select candidates to deputies abroad,” Mejía said in a statement to the media.
The ex chief executive urged the PRD leadership, rank and file and his candidacy’s supporters and not let themselves be confused by strategies of opponents, and to work in rallying activities as they’ve been doing, to win the elections in first balloting.
Moreover PRD General Secretary Orlando Jorge rebuked the deadline issued against Vargas by nine deputies, to join the campaign or takes a leave of absence from his function. “I reject that type of declaration, as much for the way as for the content, and call for the mutual respect all companions, and concentrate ourselves in the main target that to win the elections with our presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía.”

And this is based on El Hippo's stellar term in office?
Or have you forgotten the pesos huge devaluation, the flight of capital and a certain banking failure at the center of it all?

As my fellow poster, tocallo and fellow Santiaguero Juanb has stated before: "The Worst President Ever"
A laughing stock in the international arena-remember how Fidel made him look like a fool during a high profile diplomatic meeting of heads of state? To his mis-management of the nation's economy.
No second chance for this Bozo. Hasn't he done more than enough damage for a lifetime? Or has he lost his money and is in need of re-filling his coffers?

You gotta love the selective memory of these Hipoloco supporters lol! BASTA, you call Fernandez a narc but have you forgotten the whole Quirino debacle with Hipoloco? Or do you honestly believe that Hipoloco knew "nothing" about Quirino? This is of course in addition to the things mentioned by the other posters on here Atabey, Yucahu and Roystone.

When the people get tired of all these Politicians stealing from the public coffers they will elect a Chavez to take control and steal too but give the poor their share and destroy the country at the same time. Just look at Venezuelan history and you will see the future of the DR. I predicted it in Venezuela 30 years ago. President after president before Chavez raped the country with a big smile.

Hipoloco tried a coup de etat against Miguel Vargas, and it backfired badly, causing his later apologies and attempts at back slapping.
This sinks him further in the hole with Miguel Vargas, as well as educated voters with a brain, and public opinion, showing that he is just a bully, a bluffer and an empty saco de pupu.

Excuse me for 'mis-reading' your take tocayo. But isn't it fair to summarize your quote by simply stating: The Worst President Ever"?
Your universal definition might displease some other nations worthy candidates. And there are many in contention for title of worst president in the continents of Africa, Asia?
But I'll refer to your words by saying. To paraphrase my tocallo's words," next time.
BTW, my parents named me for Juan Pablo, as my birthday is very close to the 26, actually the 28.
How about you?

Let's hope we don't fall under a DR version of Chavez!
Perhaps his downfall will prevent others from imitating his mismanagement of Venezuela. I mean he has had oil money to support his mis management so far, and no sensible person would ever contemplate doing a la Chavez in DR with its lack of oil or any other great money generator.

Don't you get it. Most Dominicans are like Hipolito Mejia. That's why you see ppl worshiping such an fluffy jacket. This man is an embarassment for this party and the country. No one respects Dominicans abroad 'cause most have no class, education, and sense of commonality. Of course, that's easily seen once you have an Ex-President like HippoLoco Mad-jia.

I recall a friend saying that Hippo was the expression of 'dominicanidad at its most based level" That the Hippo understood the mentality of the lower classes and was maister of these folks. Well, perhaps he is, but there are many Dominicans who aren't swayed by his wallowing propensities in the muddy confines. Let those so inclined to wallow with him, those with reasoning powers will do differently. Hippo bets on the past, we must bet on the future.

Hipolito Mejia- the embodiment of all the shortcomings of the Dominican state..I've said it before and I'll say it again...in a nation where, say, 25-30% of the people have achieved higher education and were literacy hovered above 90% this goon wouldn't even be a player in the game.
