Santo Domingo.- Today Thursday January 26 marks the 199th anniversary of the birth of the country’s Founding Father, Juan Pablo Duarte, who conceived and impelled the cause of Dominican Republic, with his preachings on freedom and created two organizations which served as the ideological and conspirative platforms of independence.

Duarte’s secret society La Trinitaria, with the also leaders Ramon Matias Mella and Francisco del Rosario Sanchez, led the ouster of the Haitian occupation in February 27, 1844.

Starting 8am the ceremonies to honor the patriarch include a parade and hoisting of the flag in San Francisco de Macorís, Duarte province. There at 10:30am, president Leonel Fernandez will preside over the day’s central activities.

Today also marks the start of the Month of the Nation, to commemorate several patriotic holidays including Mella’s birth on February 25, Day of teh Flag on the 19th and Independence Day, on February 27.

Telemeco, that is a very good question. I know JPD had two daughters with Vicenta Diaz. Are there any living decendants from those two daughters???

The fact is the true father of the Dominican nation was Pedro Santana..his blade won our independence. His later folly negated that honor for all time. Duarte gained the title by default.

Cibaeno75: i happen to know families in DR that are direct decedent of Pedro Santana. they are a shame to bring the subject of Pedro Santana cause they still feel it bring shame to talk about what he did. Although i am not in the position to judge him, he did what he felt was right for the country. A bankrupt nation and constantly attack by Haiti will Drive anyone to make decision that later on will be look at the wrong decision but at the heat of the moment make lot of sense .

The difference between Santana and Duarte was that Santana unlike Duarte was a great military leader who fought and won campaigns with much less resources than the enemy. Know this; if Pedro Santana was never born then DR would have never been born either. I don’t mean to take away merit away from Duarte who was a great civil leader with admirable aptitudes, but Santana was the man with big enough cojones who did what was necessary to preserve our way of life.

From: Dominican Republic, I dislike all politicians and their afiliated parties... "I simply say it AS IT IS!!"
We need Duarte and Santana today once again. If ONLY they would have made babies. Oh, Hold on they would have been Haitian today. Why would I say something like that?

Well, stand on a corner in DR and look around....everyone looks Haitian..no one knows who is Dominican and who is Haitian?

Poor Duarte so much for nothing...EMPTY JACKET DOMINICANS!!!

A spider monkey builds better societies.

Duarte's descendants are in Venezuela. He fled there after being terrorized by Santana and others in political intrigues.

Considering that Santana sold the country back to Spain, I don't think he can be called a founding father. However, I believe that Gregorio Luperon, hero of the restoration of independence, should be added to the list. He can truly be called the father of the modern Dominican Republic.

And JPDTrinity, your comments about Haitians and needing more true Dominicans like Santana is quite ironic since Santana was born in Hinche, now part of Haiti.

If you knew a little bit more about the history of DR, you should know that during the time of Santana, what is now call the CENTRE DEPARTAMENT of Haiti was the frontier province of Dominican Republic in fact. Hinche or Hincha like it was known during those time is a Taino name and the capital of that Dominican province during those time, along side with San Rafael, San Miguel de la Atalaya, Las Caoba, these town were founded in the 16th century by immigrant from the Canary Island. For your argument Santana was born in the Dominican republic cause it was our territory giving away to Haiti in 1929 by Trujillo and the American occupying forces to secure peace between the two nation.

@cibaeño75

"true father of the Dominican nation was Pedro Santana" yes, if you consider him the father of the current politicos and high rank military officials in our country that make decisions that first benefits their pockets and not our people.

Pedro Santana was a a great general and hero during the war of indepedance, let's not take that away from him, but he did not have the civic qualities to serve as a president. He is a true representation that $$$ is what made decisions in the country.

We thank Duarte for the country he gave us, but we could blame him in a way by not initiating a standard platform for political leaders to follow. He would have been a great first example. The people wanted him as president, but he being so modest, declined in favor of actual elections, which never occurred because he was exiled by the subject here Pedro Santana.

Not even George Washington had an election other that people agreeing that he should be president like with Duarte.

"Nunca me ha sido tan necesario tener salud, corazón y juicio, ahora que malos Dominicanos, sin juicio y sin corazón, atentan contra la salud de la pátria." --Juan Pablo Duarte.

Incredible words. Something more incredible is he said them not after the fight for independence but before, while still Haitian occupation. Guess he was more troubled of malos Dominicans than of Haitian occupiers.
