Santo Domingo.- Nature.com reports that the latest spate of quakes in Dominican Republic and the magnitude-7 quake that devastated Haiti in January 2010 may herald a prolonged period of heightened seismic activity, a study warns.

It said the Historical records of seismic activity, which analyzed Hispaniola, shared by Haiti and Dominican Republic, are arguably some of the most documented in the region.

“Its long history makes Hispaniola’s strongest spate of seismic activity, a seven-decade-long cluster of four major quakes in the eighteenth century, stand out between two lengthy quiet periods,” the news source said, citing William Bakun, a seismologist with the US Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California,

“Because the population then was so sparse, however, researchers have been unsure about the strength and location of those shocks,” so Bakun and his colleagues developed a mathematical technique to compare damage reports and other data gathered during the 2010 quake and its aftershocks with historical damage reports to improve those estimates.

Not surprising. What IS surprising is the lack of public awareness by a reactive-posturing government. Where is the DR's Emergency Operations Center in all of this?

Hope there is a quake 7.0 or above, and the first building to come down are as follow

Presidential Palace

The Senate

House of Congress

Maybe when all this idiot are out the way we can start fixing the building code and educating the population about quake

What about that skeleton of a building on the Malecon and Independencia.
If there is a quake then that building will go down and kill how many people.

But you do have a metro.

Well, my hope is for the Dominican leadership to wise up and enact SOUND POLICIES!

The Destruction of a nations leadership structure is not a wise hope; for it would leave the populace and those trying to help the nation, from outside, without leaders to facilitate and coordinate relief efforts!

Think, before you wish such non-sense!

"Cutting off the nose to spite the face" will not help the people of the DR.

Let's see if anybody reports on H.A.R.P vapour [activity] clouds that have been seen, reported or photographed.

riosm,
The HAARP conspiracy theorists have been surprisingly quiet during the current spate of tremors. This confirms there is a conspiracy to silence them - probably by means or chem-trails. The End-Od-Days is near. Select your religious denomination wisely - don 't want to miss out on the next Rapture leaving town just before the big one hits.

It is interesting to read all the comments by the turn-the-other-cheek Christians listing who they would like to be buried in the rubble.

telemeco, who voted these "idiots" there in the first place, and what makes you think they would not be replaced by more idiots if they were eliminated?

@Roy

It's all Idiots voting for idiots.

This country is full of freaking idiots.

NOW when you find a non-idiot all the idiots think he is an idiot because they don't know any better.

Emaxx,
You're allowed to say that if you are Dominican.
I get censured 'cause I'm not.
