Santo Domingo.- The head of Dominican Republic’s major opposition party (PRD) Thursday said its presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía is entirely responsible for leading it to victory in May’s elections.

Miguel Vargas’ statement again brings to the fore the PRD leadership’s months-long disconnect, which has hobbled its campaign and jeopardized its possibility of returning to office after eight years in the opposition.

He said as president of the PRD, he plays his institutional part to defend the party’s acquired rights, and revealed that Mejia’s campaign has never invited him to any activity, as if he wasn’t member of that party.

He said his case is the opposite of what occurs with Leonel Fernandez who besides being president of the PLD party, is adviser of the candidate Danilo Medina’s campaign activities.

“We assumed the role of directing the party, to strengthen the PRD, to demand from the Government a series of conditions that the nation requires. Now, all the responsibility of leading the party to power, is evidently the candidate’s,” Vargas said, interviewed in the main salon of the Santo Domingo State University UASD.

Do you think that possibly Vargas is somehow being compensated for not helping Mejia?

In the DR something like that IS possible you know.

Or maybe LF has incriminating evidence about Vargas' time working (?) for the government.

Guillermo Moreno: Political system is perverted

Minority candidate Guillermo Moreno said last night that a vote for one of the candidates of the traditional parties just consolidates a perverted political system. As reported in El Caribe, the former prosecutor now running for Alianza Pais said that this is an obstacle to the country changing by democratic vote. He said that Hipolito Mejia, Danilo Medina and President Leonel Fernandez have been in power for 16 years, keeping a strong grip on the state. In his judgment, none has the moral authority to lead the nation for another minute. He said that there is neither separation nor independence of branches of government in the Dominican Republic because "they are all subject to the control of the leadership of a single party and subordinated to the personal project of President Leonel Fernandez."

"Johnny Jones formally elected"

"The National Assembly of Municipalities unanimously elected the PRSC member Johnny Jones as the General Secretary of the Dominican Municipal League (LMD), in a ceremony attended by outgoing president Fidias Aristy at the Dominican Fiesta hotel in Santo Domingo yesterday.

His candidacy was presented after an agreement between the PRSC and the PLD and was later agreed to by the PRD.

Jones said that he was committed to the strengthening of municipalities in the Dominican Republic, fulfilling Juan Pablo Duarte's dream that local government would be the fourth power in the country. He also promised to improve the culture of cleanliness everywhere."

"He praised outgoing president Fidias Aristy, stating that he had been an outstanding municipal official that during his time in the post.

The role of the LMD has been seriously questioned, with the institution described more as fostering political cronyism than any real purpose. The PRSC is a close ally to the ruling PLD party."

Yet another sign of Atabey's precious PLD's commitment to MODERNITY!
