Santiago.- Several university students ran their car over and killed two alleged gunmen riding on a scooter in the northeast sector Thursday night, after being assaulted at gunpoint, the city’s Police spokesman Lorenzo Morillo confirmed Friday.
Morillo said the case is being investigated and the students of the Santiago Technological University are being questioned.
He identified the victims as Juan Carlos Morales and Jefrey Marte, who allegedly assaulted several students at gunpoint in front of the Central supermarket at 27 de Febrero Av.
The students, according to the Police report, chased the alleged gunmen in a Toyota Corolla and caught up with them in the sector Villa Progreso, causing their death of severe cuts and bruises.

It's sad that people have to take the law in their hands, but the truth is, people are fed up and this is what happens when people feel that the authorities can't control the crime situation.
Unfortunately, since it was not self defense, and they chased the vermin, it could be seen as an intention to kill while the vermin where trying to "escape" so these students may face repercussions of the law. Though, if it had been the two vermin that got caught, it would have been a slap on the wrist and out on the streets for them in a few days.
From: United States
lovingit, you are absolutely correct in saying that it was not self defense. it is a pity that the students could be indicted for, in the very least, homicide. a pity.

Absolutely, FedericoD,
We are accepting the student's account of what happened, but it has not been tested in a proper court of law, with the usual tests of evidence and cross-examination. When the rule of law breaks down, no-matter how imperfect, everything else soon follows. I am not excusing the thieves, but I am also very worried by the lynch-mob mentality being demonstrated on this blog.

now thats how u deal with criminals the american way, or i mean the old american way. i woulda done the same thing, when u see most people in santo domingo in the street missing a limb like an arm or leg, just remember, people dont get their limbs chopped off for small crimes, people get their limbs chopped off because they are cruel inhuman animals, and these thugs basically got what they deserved.

lsantiago77,
The vast majority of amputations in this country are as a result of road-trauma and diabetes. No surprise since we have the highest rate of road deaths in the western hemisphere, and one of the highest rates of diabetes.
So "they are cruel inhuman animals, and these thugs basically got what they deserved"?
Your draconian lynch-mob mentality is very common here, as confirmed by many of the posts on DT. Yet it has done nothing to stem this country's appalling violent crime-rate. Your attitude is not the solution. It is part of the problem.
If the money spent on guns and fortifying houses was spent on selecting, recruiting, training, equipping and motivating a proper police-force and judicial system, maybe we'd have a much lower crime rate.

Likewise if people spent the money they spend on batteries, inverters and illicit cabling, actually paying their electricity bill, maybe we'd have continuity of supply?

roy i used to have ur mentality when i hadnt come to DR in 10 years, now that i have lived in DR for over 1 year i know exactly whats happening. everytime someone is caught stealing they get a limb chopped off immediately, if you dont believe me roy then check this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn418VUemSk thats 1 of hundreds on youtube, in addition, when thieves here go into your house the first thing they do is rape your wife then take your money. so animals like that deserve what they get when they are caught. in order to understand the problem you need to live in DR for some time and socialize yourself with people of low resources to fully understand the situation

lsantiago77,
I do not doubt that amputation is used as a form of retribution in Dominican barios. My wife works at the local hospital and has witnessed it 1st hand in the emergency department. Working overnight on a pay-week week-end is the worst time. Sometimes family members will come in to the hospital with machetes and guns to "finish-off" the targets of their "justice". The 2 police on duty are the first to leave the room.
Interns at the hospital, despite giving their time and expertise free, are often the victims of theft and intimidation.
Regardless road-trauma and diabetes are still the main cause of amputations. You could say all three causes are life-style related and avoidable. Tragic no less.
