Santo Domingo.– The Culture Ministry and Presidente Beer kicked off the celebration of the Dominican Carnival month of joy and color at an event in the gardens of the hotel El Embajador, where the new campaign and the details of the program were announced.

"This year the extensive program includes the coronation of the Carnival King and Queen, titles that this time go to Sergio Vargas and Hanoi Sanchez. In addition, the audience will have the chance of enjoying the Live the Carnival Reality Show," said Culture minister Jose Rafael Lantigua.

Throughout all February, Presidente beer, as the official sponsor of the Dominican Carnival, will continue developing various activities around the country through which the most representative carnival parades and gatherings of our most popular carnivals will take place, said Marisol Martinez, Brand Manager of Presidente Beer.

"Presidente, a Dominican icon and source of Dominican pride, has always maintained and sustained its support for our Carnival, preserving its authenticity, its roots and its joy. We want everyone to take an active part of this great celebration," Martinez pointed out.

The way I see it, the more people hate us, the less people we have to please. So keep the CHEAP shots coming. It just makes your obsession seem more pathetic.

yumnuk3,

Do you really think guys parading dressed as devils, whacking people with balloons, set to deafening brain-dead hip-hop, mobile-phone and beer promotions is culture?

Don't worry, you crappy event will never be inundated with foreign tourists. It's not even sexy.

Certainly the more Dominicans that share your xenophobia, the fewer tourist come and the faster this country goes under.

What are you doing here if really E V E R Y T H I N G is bad?
Sorry, except the (cheap?) women and the landscapes - both f... up by the stupid Dominicans.
Or are you sitting in your beautiful Australia, watching the beautiful intact reefs and just spill your hatred over this little island? (By the way: my sister lived for 15 years in Brisbane and left Australia to go back to Europe last year, because she missed culture and deep going friendships).
There are around 190 countries in this world. Why don't you just chose another one and shut up?

ElSuavecito,
Yes, we also had a "blast" at Carnival in La Vega last year. A "blast" from the zillion-watt competing sound-systems blasting brain-dead hip-hop to the brain-dead populous. We couldn't wait to leave, back to the north coast which was worthwhile.

So calvoleon, after enduring 15 years of uncultured Australian superficiality, why didn't your sister come to the rich culture and deep meaningful relationships that the Dominican Republic is overflowing with?

The world recognizes that the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is the best in the world, with Sao Paulo's a close 2nd, 'though not so famous.
Still Sydney's Mardi Gras still beats the Dominican Republic's best offer in La Vega.
Come to think of it, Melbourne's Moomba beats it too.
Still if you have never been anywhere and know nothing, La Vega Carnival beat Dominican TV or the corner bar.

ScandiViking, I have stayed in Salvador but not during Carnival (Only in Sao Paulo). However I heard it is fabulous. More like a super concert than a parade? Anyway this country's Colonial Zone could certainly learn from Bahia about historic and cultural tourism, would you agree?

There is always something better somewhere else. Of course La Vega is not Rio. But I never heard that they even thought of competing. And tastes are different, too.
The Zona Colonial of course could learn from nearly everywhere - from Lima to Quito or even Mexico City. Of course it's a shame and pity that they leave it in a state of desertion.
Nobody says it's paradise here. But when I read your statements every day, I wonder what you are looking for in this hell, that it is for you obviously.
My sister has nothing to do with the Dominican Republic, so why should she come here? She wasn't enduring Australia either, she liked it. But she missed real friends and as I said - culture.
And isn't Dominican "culture" exactly what they copy from the great big neighbor in the north? God is money. You are allowed to do anything to get it. Without it you are nothing and nobody. Didn't they learn the golden law of "supply and demand" perfectly? You (70 years) want my sister (12)?

You want 10 kilos of cocaine - wait - I'll get it for you.
Even the little clowns, sorry, tígueres, copy the big cool men of the north: too stupid to pull up their pants or to put their cap. With big chains and poking around in the air meaningfully with two fingers when they talk. Where does that bull$hit come from?
And finally, I really don't understand why you stay here and suffer. As I told you, there are so many beautiful countries around the world. But I'm afraid, you'll find mistakes everywhere. So sorry for you.

I am sorry your sister thought Brisbane lacked culture. Many Australians say the same. If you want culture, there are much better cities like Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. However if your sister spent 15 years in Brisbane after experiencing the culture of Europe, how can she still be 12 years old? Maybe I missed your point.

calvoleon,
I did not expect La Vega to be like Rio. As far as Carnivals go, no country, and certainly not Australia can match Rio. However based on all the hype, I was expecting something much better. Likewise the Colonial Zone, likewise the beaches and coral reefs, likewise the rivers and rainforest, likewise the music. However this country has some very good things too, and I married one of the best.

Still based on some of the postings here, you would think this country has the best of everything. It doesn't. Most recognize it has "some problems" but no more than any other country. Well I'm sorry, it does, But when I point this out, I am hit with a barrage of insults and attacks on Australia, by people who have never been there, and obviously know nothing about it.

I'm not sure if you can blame Dominican materialism entirely on USA. Materialism is everywhere - the world economy depends on it. However it seems to be worse here. Value is placed on cheep superficial things, and not things of lasting capital worth. I don't know why, but whatever it is, is destroying this country.

The Dominican Republic is a tropical country. Nothing lasts, everything is easy. You don't feel cold and nearly everybody is friendly. I don't know where you (not only you, many, maybe most other foreigners - especially in Sosúa) see all these horrible people.
And tastes are different. I always loved Latin Music and I love Dominican music, even some of the newer música urbana. Of course you have a serious problem if you don't like the music here. But that's your problem, not a Dominican problem.
Yes, you missed the point - 12 years have nothing to do with my sister. I meant when a 12 year old girl is offered to a 70 years old mummy for money.
Okay, let's get to an end with this. I only hope that your wife can cope to live with such a sourpuss.

RoyMojón,
I never made a comment about culture, it's just a big outdoor merrymaking. The carnivals cannot be compared, it would be like comparing sunlight to water, all carnivals stand alone just fine all over the world, because people enjoy them for different reasons.

Truly an imbecilic nincompoop comparison on your behalf. And, no, we are not obliged to compare anything. It's not a competition. It's not a race. There is no winner or loser, because all the carnivals have one thing in common. After a few drinks and dance steps, most people find it easier to meet and mingle, and generally luxuriate themselves socially.

By the way, your comments are invaluable as we the provincial-minded continue to improve and learn in every possible way, so please continue with your animadversions in a bestial form.

{"Still based on some of the postings here, you would think this country has the best of everything. It doesn't. "}

Of course not, Mr. Roy!!
We only like to think we do!!....Why must you take things so literal? We enjoy our little fun and imagine it to be something akin to Mardi Grass or Rio...Why must you deflate our dream globe?
Who cares about magnitude when people want to have fun and brag disproportionately about facts?
What's it to you? Again I must echo the same anger and slant as some have here posed:... Move out!!.. Nobody likes disgruntles!

The frozen snow on the trees outside my house looks beautiful but I froze my hands doing a quick walkway shovelling ... how could I not wait to return to the tropical DR? friends, beaches, greenery, birds and the food ... but the garbage is still unfamiliar, even poor parts of Canada do not have the litter that seems normal in POP!

sure have a carnival party, have as much fun as you can balanced with work, life is short so enjoy the culture but clean up afterwards!!

FedericoD,
Canada is not tropical, but it has more "friends, beaches, greenery, birds and food" than the Dominican Republic, in terms of quantity and quality. Where can you go camping in the wilderness in this little island, in pristine forests, surrounded by the sounds of native fauna, without fear of being assaulted or robbed, or serious illness from drinking the water? Where can you ski downhill on fresh powder? Where can you drive without pot-holes and live without bars on the windows?
Sure, Dominican women are vastly superior to Canadian. Take one home then you have the best of both worlds, Otherwise commute regularly.

Roy,

I have come to the conclusion you dislike anything Dominican except for your wife and that is fine. To each its own, but what are you doing here? I would not be in a country's site if I disliked it so much. Trust me I am not hating on you because I do not expect everyone in the world to love my country but those who think so poorly of it, I have the right to question their presence here!

ojedamaggiolo80,
I have praised a number of things in this country, on DT, not just my Dominican wife. However I will admit the bad things outnumbers the good. Regardless I leave much of the praise to the locals.
What strikes me as a foreigner, is how good it could be here, if only people changed their attitude. It doesn't need a lot of money. I mention that, because lack of funds is such a common excuse I hear.
There is recognition by some Dominicans that there are problems, but in my opinion, they underestimate their extent. There are others who are totally oblivious and believe this is the best country in the world.

Roy, you have a right to critisize and you do so, ( I suspect), because you care enought about our little part of the world.
I too lament the fact that most of us, Dominicans, have little concern for the status quo. The entire country's a garbage dump, people are rude and inconsiderate, we're an uncultured lot and behave, at times, as savages.
I wonder sometimes, if all this has a lot to do with our racial, cultural or educational backgrounds?
Or all three, put together?
If so, the only aspect that can be changed is education. The other two, we have to live with; and if these are the main reasons for our failure to launch into the first world, we'll always be a failed and miserable nation.
I know you'll eventually tire of the situation there and move on. I couldn't blame you.
Lets hope in the next ten years, we get enought of an education to wake up and see the garbage,
change our attitude and behave as civilized people. Somehow, I doubt it. ...But maybe..

I understand your point Roy. I am 100% Dominican and very proud of it. Because of the love I have for my country I try to educate family members, friends, associates, employees and strangers about all of the wrong doings. I beleive all Dominicans know that we do not have a perfect country but we love it so much it will always be the best country in the world to us. I am well aware of all the problems in my small island nation but never give up hope that all of our country's issues will get resolved! I left the United States of America to come to my island nation and contribute to my birth place all of the experience I acquired in the USA. I did this because of the love I have for my country and my people. With that said, no matter how bad things are theres always hope.
