Santo Domingo.- To the beat of native drums, hip hop and waving banners of the opposition PRD party, hundreds of bus drivers converged in the Office of the Environment Prosecutor Tuesday, to support the feared union boss and deputy Juan Hubieres, who’ll be questioned for allegedly violating the Environment Law.
Dozens of drivers from various towns in nearby provinces and the National District, with pickets chanting “enough persecution against Juan Hubieres already,” snarled traffic upset daily activities in the Centro de los Heroes near Congress, where a group of drummers and callers was accompanied by powerful loudspeakers.
The demonstrators have been cordoned off by antiriot police, in what appears to be a political rally, with demonstrators waving flags of the PRD and other opposition parties.
“Hubieres, we support you” and “we are with you” chant the demonstrators, to the loudspeakers blast of “You have, without you this country sinks.
The legislator, who arrived after 10:30am accompanied by his lawyer Thomas Castro, faces charges of invading and causing damages in a protected area in the sector Los Farallones, together with a group of drivers of his union, FENATRANO.
The crimes against the victims from Hubieres’ often violent strikes have gone unpunished, for which the local media have dubbed him one of the country’s “owners.”

" Vandalism and blocking the traffic, no"
Agreed !
Then why doesn’t "The Delinquent in Chief" Lie-onel Fernandez arrest him?

If they are trying to get this guy on something why not him the old mobster way, Tax invasion... I'm sure they would have a far better chance than environmental damage...
I wanted to ask if anyone had seen the story from a few months ago that was covered on TV just once, about the taxi drivers blocking a highway to protest that they were getting driving fines... fines for braking the law, they soon moved the cars and told it would stop.... the fines that is... WHAT THE HELL????? Have not seen any more about it....

Great insight into Hubieres thinking can be found simply by checking out the hat he wore.
Che Guevera? Juan Hubieres? Nice thought.

When are they going to make a movie of the week on this guy? Not even bullets can stop him, much less law enforcement or the legal system. A true and proven untouchable.

Here is an update with good pictures:
“Juan Hubieres doesn’t allow himself to be questioned by the environmental prosecutor”
“During the meeting with the prosecutor Hubieres was told that he had to reduce the number of lawyers that would remain in the room”
Sounds like the prosecutor is interfering with the accused’s right to mount a defense!
Can anyone say KANGAROO COURT other than Roy?

Come on, josean, how many defense lawyers did he have, a room full of thugs and calling them defense lawyers? I don't think you can say that asking to reduce it to a reasonable number is "interfering with the accused’s right to mount a defense". He should not be mounting a defense at this stage anyway, he should only be saying what happened at the incident, and why. It looks to me like the persecutor is trying to prevent an abuse of process, or intimidation of the interrogator. Remember this guy's stock in trade is intimidation. He has no right to refuse to be questioned. He has the right to remain silent, which the judge will take in to account when it goes to trial. It seems he couldn't remain silent even if he tried.

"a room full of thugs and calling them defense lawyers"
Roy, I was not there and I think it would be safe to say you weren't there either to determine if these were credentialed officers of the court i.e. lawyers or thugs, although to some they are consider one in the same.
"reasonable number"
And who determines that reasonable number, Roy? I think there is an inherent conflict of interest if that is determine solely by the prosecution. Left to his discretion the “objective” prosecutor might feel one lawyer is one lawyer to many. That’s why in the United States we have the Miranda rule
http://www.aclu.org/miranda I am not sure if we have the protection in DR or if you have something similar in the land down under.

"should not be mounting a defense"
Roy, with the hang them first and have the trial later mentality most people have towards him I think you would not begrudge this "thug" for taking all the necessary precautions as early as possible in this “transparent and objective process devoid of any political malice" would you?
"He has no right to refuse to be questioned"
He did not refuse to be questioned; in fact he waived his privilege of legislative immunity as elected member of the legislature in good standing. What he did object to was the conditions under which he was going to be questioned.
"He has the right to remain silent, which the judge will take in to account when it goes to trial"
Here we have contradiction because on the one hand you say he should not be mounting a defense at this stage yet you seem to be confirming his suspicions that this will indeed end up in trail before a "judge."

Josean, I do not have the same faith in lawyers as you, and certainly couldn't afford a room-full. Yes we do have something like the Miranda rule, but I don't know what it's called. A waste of time if you ask me. How can anyone think that what they say would not be used against them?
As for "political malice" it seem to me that Hubieres is the one politicizing his arrest. If he broke the law then he should be charged, tried and convicted if found guilty. In my view, "native drums, hip hop and waving banners of the opposition PRD party, hundreds of bus drivers" is an attempt to intimidate the prosecutor and divert the cause of justice.
Dare I suggest that had they been waving purple banners you would not be so sympathetic? Anyone who plays hip hop needs a frontal lobotomy anyway.

Roy today you have become a true Dominican; with the always suspicious nature related to motivation that one is not defending the principal of fair and equal just for all on its own merit, but rather that is because of a true or perceived allegiance to a political party.
That’s ok though, I still like your style even when you’re wrong and a little politically paranoid!
