The President unveils the mockup.

Santo Domingo.- Part of president Leonel Fernandez’s security detail is already in Port-au-Prince coordinating details of his next week’s visit with Haiti’s authorities, to inaugurate a university which the Dominican Government builds in the neighboring nation.

In the aftermath of the January 2010 earthquake Fernandez pledged the construction of the higher learning center in the Haiti community Limonade, at a cost of around US$50.0 million shared with the Dominican private sector, in an area of 300,000 square meters.

The university is part of Santo Domingo’s package of humanitarian aid provided to Haiti after the quake, making Dominican Republic one of the countries which has most supported Port-au-Prince economically per capita.

Last time LF was in Haiti, he received a "rocky" welcome from haitian mobs and his security detail was
almost overrun by protesters, high tailing it back to DR.
My question is:
LF doesn't lift a finger unless something is in there for him, and the project is supported by "private sector", so what companies that are unnamed here, need a presence in Haiti?

Sure!!!! educate others and forget about yours.....

Is he going to teach the hatians to stay there ?

I could point out many schools in DR that could have used that money collectively.....

Yes, RobertoJose, and not to mention USAD, the New World's oldest university - and it looks it, a derelict disgrace. Help Haiti by all means, but the president's duty is to his own people before building his own international prestige.

We educated Haitians don't want to come to DR. There's too much racism in DR. We don't want to experience racism. We can never can never forget what our ancestors did to the people of Santo Domingo. Even though some dictator repay us for what our ancestors did long ago. As a child my Great grandfather told me the entire story of Jean Pierre Boyer and The people of Santo Domingo. He was a witness at that time. If any Dominicans or other nationalities want to know the whole story. Please ask me about it. There's a lot of that you are reading on the internet is false. Thank you for the university that your gov't gave to our people. I hope it keep some of our people at home in Haiti. We need to stop all the negativity/ racism between Dominicans and Haitians.

I don't think that we should be spending money on another country especially when we have so many problems but it's probably the best thing we could do for the Haitian people this way they'll have more opportunities for having a better education.

Haitians don't need higher education if they don't even have basic education! They need to improve their lifestyle and their basic education (primary school and high school) before going on to higher education. All they're going to do with this donated univ is steal everything that's in there, just destroy it, like with everything else!

RoyStone,

it's UASD, investigate before bullshitting.

To the Haitians talking about racism in the DR

Sorry to tell you, but that's the case everywhere. You're right in that the DR is walking backwards with the race issue, as the US grows less racists, the DR becomes more and more racist, not only with Haitians, but with Dominicans as well and any black person from other countries (Including US). Dominicans are stupid and they think that people from the US are only white, but that's not true. Dominicans are stupid people, you only have to come and attempt to drive to see the brutality and the stupidity of the people of this country. As a Dominican, I am deeply ashamed of my people and there's nothing I can do but educate myself and advocate for the education of these people.
Please, higher education in the DR is bullshit! I live in the US and I go to college here. There's no time for bullshit, there's no time for being frivolous, otherwise you just fail.
Look at the univs in the DR, look at all those people, all they do is (cont)

This is great, very wonderful, education is the primary key out of poverty.
We hope Haitians to enjoy and appreciate this big effort made by our people
and at the same time it serves to show the International Community that:
Where is a Will there is a Way so they start as soon as possible rebuilding Haiti
once and for all suffering must be put a limit.

Thank you Mr. President, my thanks goes also to Juan L. Guerra for the Hospital building
we are showing to the world how noble and valuable Dominicans are (!)

all they do is waste time. They think that going to college is going to a fashion show, is not about learning, is about showing off what you have (cloth, make up, cars, etc). It's stupid. Look at the papers they have to write, is a copy paste! Ask a dominican student to write a thesis driven paper, they'll look at you with their eyes wide open, like a deer in the headlights! They don't know what that is, all they ever do is go on wikipedia con copy paste everything that it says there. Students graduate from "college" in the DR without knowing how to think, how to evaluate the things around them, themselves, and the things they do. We have graduating engineers and students of medicine, and they have no idea how to be critical thinkers! That's why our buildings are bullshit, our medical system leaves a lot to wish for. And of course, that's all we have, that's everything people major in in the Dominican Republic. There's no political science, no History, Music, Art, etc.

Everything Dominicans do is mediocre. Dominicans live out of "pantalleo" it's all fake publicity.
I congratulate our government for being so noble, but like someone said before, there's probably a lot of benefits going into LF's and his peoples' pockets.
It's good that we've shown so much compassion with Haiti, not only because they need it and deserve it, but also so that everyone gets off out butts just because we are not legalizing every Haitian that comes in.
In a way, I clap our government, but on the other hand, it's still a true disappointment.

Airgordo, There are some of the youth studing in DR. They are educated kids from the Northside like Cabo Haitiano that don't want to go to Porto Princia cause it's too dangererous for them to stay focus on their studies. They are doing the right thing to inprove their lives with a better education since they can't come to the US, Canada and France to study. Most of the Haitians crossing to your country are the uneducated countryside brute macheteros Haitians. Like your friend said brute macheteros Haitians. We are very aware of the Illegal Haitians going to DR for work. I think that the DR need some of them cause they are doing all the dirty underpay jobs that Dominicans don't want to do. In 2 years, the univesity will blossom and God will never let it turn into a Letrine.

ings0389,
Sorry for the typo, you are right, it is UASD, not USAD.

However does that make my post BS? From your later post it seems you are agreeing with me, and much of what you say is true. I know a number of UASD students and graduates, although mostly in the medical faculty. Their academic years may not be up to world standards, however it seems they make up for it when they are thrown in at the the deep end, in their internship in a hospital.

Maybe you are right about some university students being more interested in how they look than the quality of their education, but isn't that in common with most Dominicans?

airgordo,
If ings0389 acknowledges that Dominicans are racist, and is trying to get a proper education in USA, that does not make him a gringo wannabe. Patriotism is not about pretending everything is good in your homeland. It's about seeing things how they are, and trying to fix what needs fixing. Sometimes you need to live in another country to know what is good and bad with your own.

If you find your self hating on this you have no since of direction. This university is a good thing for both nations. An educated Haiti is a better future for the island as a whole. An educated Haiti is what the DR needs to prevent border crossing, other method have not work, so why not try education??? Good Job Leo, I still don’t politicians.

DR folks! I understand your concerns. Your expectations on Haiti are very low due to her track records. I admit that I am guilty of that also. It’s very frustrating. However, like I said many times here before, for the sake of the ENTIRE ISLAND, we all better hope that this university works. It’s a start, and I am very grateful.

Haiti will never forget your help. You can count on that. We must move forward. The biggest challenge is to find a way to get rid of corrupted morons on both sides of the island -BECAUSE that’s what’s holding us back.

Oh Roy, you are the voice of reason on this site. Keep on posting.

It is not a priority for the government because sadly it is not a priority for the majority of the voting Dominican public.
Looking cool, material goods and having fun (preferably without needing to work much for them) is a priority.
Perhaps Leo's personal motive for this is to look good to the international community. Repairing a dilapidated education system in your own country does not make international headlines. After all the money people have donated to help Haiti, and since anything positive happening there is a rare event, it is newsworthy.

He can now get a quality Dominican higher Education in Haiti a win for the DR for after graduating he will settle roots in Haiti not DR, adding to the imigration burden. Beside behind this, Mickey will sure to make sure an Avenue in the new P--Au-P will name after you.
