Santo Domingo.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reported that the tremor felt 5:35am Thursday caused cracks in at least eight constructions in the southern mountain city of San José de Ocoa.

COE director Juan Manuel Méndez said they’ve received information that traffic on the road to and from the community of El Pinar, Azua province, has been cut off on rockslides.

The official also reported rockslides in the Southern Highway in the span near the community El Numero, adding that emergency crews were sent to work to restore traffic on those roads quickly.

Nothing like travelling 50 mph + underground during a massive quake hoping the power doesn't go out bringing everything to a halt in total darkness with no hope of rescue for at least one week if ones super lucky.

It was a 5.3 apparently. Now, is it the last? Will individuals and government have proper expertise to verify cracks?

The metro has not been affected at all ...although this will be sad news to all who for some reason want to see it fail ,,can not understand why anyone wants to see the Metro be affected by a quake or flood ..You could easily feel the quake in the capital

Where has anyone said that they want the METRO to be affected?

We just want it to be INSPECTED!

Since many of us, and I would venture to say the majority of the public as well, don't have the blind faith an allegiance you have to the rulers of this extremely “honest and transparent,” FAILED NARCO STATE!

This is why they must INSPECT!

“Residents of tall buildings are unaware if the buildings are suitable to withstand an earthquake of great magnitude”

“They also express that the majority of the buildings usually must have emergency stairs although there are some that do not have such an important security measure.”

“SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic.-In the wake of the earthquake that struck this Thursday the Dominican Republic of 5.3 on Richter, panic has not ceased in the majority of people living in apartments of high-rise buildings in Santo Domingo and they say that they do not always know if the place where they live are prepared for these types of disasters.”

With practically every building I have seen in the country built out of cement blocks, one can only wonder when a nasty quake will bring all these lego building block structures to the ground ... very scary the seemingly singular use of these blocks ... steel (steal) anyone?

People must be remelting the manhole covers to make rebar in this country, why else would so many manhole covers be missing from the middle of the roadways?

Josean, maybe the Metro will be the only safe place when the big one comes?
Not only are many houses made out of concrete blocks without compliance to any building codes, but the windows and doors are covered in bars and will make a rapid escape in times of collapse and / or fire very difficult.
Still, we have Jesus.

As it turned out, one rock-pile on the road was in fact a speed-hump, and the other was a barricade to protest over power-cuts.
