Santo Domingo.- Channel 16 TV reporter Joahnna Pérez denounced Thursday that the bodyguards of opposition PRD party presidential candidate Hipolito Mejía “roughed her up” while covering his campaign, and becomes the fourth journalist in just three weeks to complain of rough treatment by the ex President’s security personnel.

“I got close to Mejía and wanted to ask him a question, but the bodyguards pushed me, but I insisted and then they pushed me a third time that I fell to the ground, and couldn’t get up because of the multitude. I was trampled,” she said, as cameras from other channels caught the melee on tape.

The most recent incident has now become part of a pattern which has marred Mejia’s image since holding office, when his then security detail chief, then active Army general Pedro Julio Goico Guerrero “Pepe Goico” earned a reputation for treating reporters with aggression.

Recent cases

Two more reporters were “manhandled” by Mejia’s security in the Country Club La Vega Real (central) yesterday, according to news source bani.com.do.

Ambiorix Ortega, of TV channels Vegateve, and Pepe de la Rosa, of Platinum, found themselves looking at the barrel of guns wielded by Mejía bodyguards, and affirmed they were physically mistreated, despite affirming that they are members of the party of the ex President, the PRD.

Just three weeks ago, the TV journalist Gilbert Guzmán resigned from the SIN news program, in the wake of a controversy over the release of a video in which one of Mejía’s bodyguards is seen pushing him.

Guzman said he resigned because of comments that he wanted to hide the video, and prevent jeopardizing the former chief executive’s presidential candidacy.

In the National Palace

During Mejia’s term in office, Goico was dubbed the President’s “mad dog” for his aggression against journalists, one incident even led to the firing of a video technician assigned to the National Palace Press Department.

In fairness to my "friends" who support the PRD and Mr. Mejia here on DT I have looked at many of the anti-PRD papers and none so far have pick-up on this story.

Could anybody please provide an additional source for this story?

I just went to pasoapaso.com.do the, source for the pictures above and I could find these two pictures linked to this story.

I am also concerned that the picture of the alleged lady on the floor has no faces of the "victim" or the "aggressors."

Can anybody provide more corroboration?

The PLD Has had 12 of 16 years to control media and set the agenda. PRD knows they are being set up by the "unbiased media" evrey chance they get.

IF papa gets in the 4% for eductaion will be a done deal and the island will finally have masters programs to offer and that will at least be a foundation for the youth to have to look forward too.

I saw the reporters myself being over the top with how they yell out questions and the questions they ask. its all BS. like the in the NFL when they barly get tapped and they fall down in pain to draw the penalty.

Obamas guys do the same thing if you go to an obama rally and start yelling out questions , you are tazed and hauled away.

Sadly, in the DR "Freedom of the Press" means that the media workers are free to accept whatever bribes they can. In a country as corrupt as the DR, how else it possible that there is no investigative journalism with the exception of Nuria and perhaps one other, and no outcry for justice.

Now Ron if I say that maybe Lie-onel did that because there was no evidence to go after Mr. Mejia am I being pro Lie-onel or pro Mejia?

Or if I say Lie-onel withdrew the subpoena because he didn't want the same action to be taken against him in the future does that make me anti-DR?

Neither, they are just interesting questions to pose that maybe history someday will answer!

Mr. Ron,

You just have problem with truth and bigger problem with free expression.

Who is forcing you to read my posts and even more importantly why do you feel compelled to react to them?

Other people read and ignore them as babble and others read them and enjoy them. When you buy DT then you may have control until then just pass them by or change the channel with your pompous attitude as the Paladin of righteousness.

The issue is you don’t like the message but are afraid to defend a counterpoint ,so like all closeted purple censors you try to attack the messenger. That’s very Vinchista of you!

Ron, unlike Josean, I am in favor of the Metro. I also do not agree with his view that it is the government's responsibility to feed, clothe and house its citizens.

However he does support his obviously well-considered views and despite much criticism of this country, has the best interests of the majority of its citizens at heart.

I am not aware of any law that restricts the time of day or night one can post on blog sites (where I am the bandwidth during the day is very narrow).

Perhaps his posts would improve if he did not need to defend himself from personal attacks?

"with his view that it is the government's responsibility to feed, clothe and house its citizens."

Well Roy her you should have no difference with me since I have never advocated that; that is an assumption on your part.

So let me make my view perfectly clear.

I don't advocate for equal results, however, I do advocate for equal opportunity. I also support that we as collective citizenry, aspiring to be a democratic society have a responsibility either out of altruism or self-interest to help those that can’t help themselves i.e. the elderly, the disabled and children from dysfunctional environments.

With regard to the METRO it was the wrong project; i.e. cheaper alternatives were available and at the wrong time; i.e. it was not a priority since the our educational system is worse than the cavemen’s and for the wrong reasons; i.e. a poorly planned and poorly executed reelection gimmick which still is under used after almost four years, no feeder routes and a $25,000,000 million dollar albatross subsidy around the neck of the Dominican taxpayer for only 14 kilometers of "service" that majority in the country or in the Capital for that matter will never use.

"Who is forcing you to read my posts and even more importantly why do you feel compelled to react to them?"

In honor of Ron's very admirable coming to his senses:

A special treat for all the METROMANIACS, here is a wonderful opinion piece published in DT some time ago on the Dominican 8th wonder of the world the METRO!

Opinion - 9 August 2005, 4:59 PM

Bread, Circus, Subways and Artificial Islands

The Romans had a basic formula for governing the masses. "Give them bread and circus". Most modern governments still adhere to that basic formula (bad television and cheap hamburgers) but in our little country, our politicians must have missed the lesson as it was given. They must have been staring out the window, daydreaming, when it was being presented. Consequently they only provide us with circus but, Oh! My, what a fine circus it is. Barnum and Bailey would have been impressed.

The various political parties certainly keep everyone entertained and distracted as we all try to anticipate what they can dream of next. It's not funny really but since they missed that lesson we're only stuck with circus. Finding the bread is our problem!

The country is facing some serious challenges. Can they all not put aside their own petty self interests for a while and work together to confront these challenges? Enough with the clown acts. I'm waiting for the lion tamers. I'm waiting to see someone tackle the problems. Financial mismanagement, systemic corruption, rampant criminality, bloated public service where little service to the public is being provided and failing infrastructures are some of the problems worth tackling, are they not? We want to join the ranks of the advanced nations but they think we can make the great leap forward while they are at the helm of a sinking ship of state.

The Metro is now back on the agenda. I could just envision the thinking behind this project. "New York has a subway. If we had a subway we would be just like New York. Let's build a subway". End of study.

Before a city undertakes the construction of one of these systems, extensive studies are required to ensure that a white elephant is not built. Prior to digging the first hole, let us make sure that such a system meets our needs and is within our means to support. Personally I believe that this is one project for the private sector. Let them take the risk and reap the rewards if any are to be had. No government money should be spent. No government guarantees should be given. He who takes the risk reaps the benefits.

Suspend your disbelief for a moment as I transport you to the circus in the year 2010. The Metro had been completed in Santo Domingo two years prior.

SudineroEselmío, a skilled politician who won the hearts of the masses by promising to build a 10 meter high wall along the full length of the Haitian/Dominican border. He called it the "Muro Patriotico" (Patriotic Wall) and the masses loved the idea. All of the country's resources were diverted to this project. The construction industry drooled at the profits to be made. The money soon dried up as we have seen so often in these projects, so among other things, the president refused to fund the continued subsidies that the Metro required. Sudinero Eselmío told the people that the Metro wasn't his project therefore he wasn't responsible for maintaining it. The Muro

Patriotico came first. The tube soon became abandoned for lack of maintenance, but the country still owed over one billion dollars to international banks. Could not something similar really happen? Drive around Santo Domingo today.

Can we not see many fine examples of uncompleted projects, dead monuments to previous governments?

Every large modern city should have a mass transit system. It is very expensive to keep them clean and efficient. They require a lot of maintenance and need a very extensive route system thereby making every sector of the city accessible otherwise their use is limited. Security is a big issue in many of these systems as we saw what happened in London last month. These systems need huge annual subsidies to keep them in viable condition. They also require a well coordinated bus system to feed them a steady stream of passengers.

Most cities of the population size of Santo Domingo have well defined downtowns. These are areas of heavy concentrations of people who work in office towers and who come in from the outlining areas to work in the city centre. For these cities, a Metro type of mass transit makes sense. Do we have a downtown?

Do all those cars that travel along Avenida Maximo Gomez use that route to get to somewhere else for lack of alternatives? How many people would use the Metro but would then need alternative transportation beyond the proposed route? How long would it take someone to figure out that only a few people in real terms would benefit from a Metro at this time in the city's history and current layout? Should these few people be beneficiaries of such a huge public expenditure when there is so much to be attended to in the rest of the country?

The politicians say "Metro", the masses hear "all our ground transportation problems will be solved cheaply". Circus! The politicians say it will be built within this mandate at a ridiculously low cost, the masses believe it.

Circus! We, in Santiago, want one also! Circus!

Can we trust someone who cannot supply us with a steady, clean source of electrical energy to build us a mass transit system that requires a steady, clean source of electrical energy? I am serious! Give this project to the private sector. If there are no takers it's because we are still seeing the clown show at the circus.

Josean asks "do we have a downtown?"
I was wondering that myself (we call it the CBD)

Roy,

No, that is the author Mr. Alfredo Guzman who poses the question.

Let me see;

To my friend Ron Evane,

While we are on the Topic of Hipólito Mejia how about reviewing this gem of an editorial from DT’s past to see if the critique of Lie-onel is falls under the category of “bashing of the country” as you define it;

Opinion - 25 July 2005, 2:44 PM

Not so fast…

The title reads “Subpoena for ex-president Mejía cancelled because he was not informed.”

The news item, with a Listin Diario, New York by-line, refers to president Leonel Fernandez’s justification for the surprising derailment of a judicial process which we –and arguably much of the country- wanted to see continue on track and the Dominican system of Justice needed to “expeditiously ventilate.”

But because the Dominican chief executive’s revelation regarding the cancellation of the Santo Domingo District Attorney’s subpoena of Mejia in relation to the scandalous narcotics case of Quirino Paulino Castillo occurred in New York, the feeling of deception is deeper.

“Because being the head of the public prosecutors he found out about the measure when he read it in newspapers,” he said.

“…the subpoena could not be issued without his consent,” he added.

We all remember a stoic President Fernandez during the historic, unprecedented session of the Congressional-Judiciary-Executive Branch Council which selected the first, truly independent Supreme Court justices. We all praised his posture then.

So Mr. Fernandez, whom we’ve heard countless of times swear his allegiance to a totally independent Justice System, now needs to retrace his steps because in New York, just as trains derail and cause great harm, his once firm image of staunch defender of a modern system of Justice definitely jumped the tracks.
