Santo Domingo.- Multimillionaire British fraudster Michael Brown has been arrested in the Dominican Republic resort of Punta Cana after going on the run, say unnamed local police officials quoted by UK news sources.
DT learned of the mysterious case when contacted by a British newspaper which sent reporters to the country, and were surprised that the local authorities weren’t aware that Brown had been living in the country for several years, even going into various types of businesses.
They were also surprised that the UK authorities had yet to make a formal request for the fugitive’s apprehension.
Brown was sentenced in his absence to seven years in jail after being convicted of fraud at Southwark Crown Court in 2008.
He donated about Stg2.4 million ($A3.65 million) to the Liberal Democrats ahead of the 2005 general election - its largest donation to date.
British news source telegraph.co.uk reports that Police in the Dominican Republic are now searching for the British fugitive, backed by a threat to deport him because he is in the country on false documents.
But they expressed dismay that British police never told them that Brown was on the Caribbean island.
The con man was in custody on unrelated charges for three months this year, but freed because they had no idea he was a wanted man.
"We cannot deal with what we do not know," said the judge who jailed him.

Quite an interesting case ,,,This man from Glasgow defrauded numerous clients of between 30 and 40 million pounds , including some 8 million pounds from an ex charman of Manchester United ,,With this money he donated some 2.3 million pounds to a political party, Liberal Democrats . When he went to court more than four years ago he was granted bail of some 7 million pounds and then somehow skipped the UK , I think with a gangster and then landed in Punta Cana .
He will now lose his bail which would have been refundable if the bail conditions had been met . More interestingly is that the people he defrauded do not get their monety back but the political party retains the money that originally belonged to the people Brown defrauded .
Cap Cana has a relatively large community of Brits so I am surprised he was not dobbed in earlier and how did he get his money from the UK into the DR to set up several businesses.
There is no extradition treaty and no Brit has ever been forced back !!

I for one don't think the money is here.
There's an old rule amongst wise guys: never have the corpus delicti and the money in one same place. Complicate the case and evidence.
In the case of that gentleman, he is the corpus delicti, and the money has to be elsewhere.

Walter Polo ,,,if he did not have the actual money here ,,he had free access to it ,,maybe through the intermediatory ..you do not play golf at Punta Cana cheaply or at Corales .
He will not remain with his own here as he has already been turned in by them and he is in prison here not enjoying himself outside.and his return to the UK will either because he hasalready been convicted by a court in London ..or a deal will be made between governments .

I gather they'll deport him on the grounds of entering the DR with a false identity.
And guess where the first plane is headed?

I do not know where the first plane will be headed but he will be handcuffed to a man from the British embassy..I feel confident that this matter will be handled in a fairly orthodox matter ,,even if it may take a few weeks for formalities to be completed ..

Michael Misick should have had the TCI constitution re-written by the Purple Gang constitutional team while he had a chance.
He could have stayed home, enjoyed his riches, and provided shelter for the Lie-o'Nells of this world.

This sounds like one of those "I almost got away with it" episodes, especially given the fact that the police took him into custody and had him jailed for three months for an unrelated crime... I guess that since Brit officials never notified the DR Police that this man was wanted there (probably because of the lack of an extradition treaty), The DR Police had nothing else they could cross reference him to when he got jailed and fingerprinted for the unrelated crime.
@Roy.. yes our legal system is f^cked up and corrupt, but at least the DR Police made him serve 3 months for something else instead of kissing his ass for being a rich foreigner.. so something gets done right every once in a while.

Your info is incorrect, not only are wanted Brits returned to their home countries where they are wanted, but other nationalities too.
The DR cops are very good, they are not all the thieves some think they are, and they always find a way of getting rid of trash like this.
This guy was originally arrested in Feb last year here and released on house arrest, because no info was forthcoming from the British Authorities. They are now holding him again without bail, for using false IDs. There has still been no official request from the UK to extradite him

It is well known that all the Jail birds/crooks/Pimps and other criminals from Europe, US , Canada and others countries /region find refuge in the DR. The day you'll kick them out , you'll have less corruption in your country (Drugs etc).
