Leonel Fernandez and Michel Martelly.
Port-au-Prince.– President Michel Martelly thanked President Leonel Fernandez for the new university the Dominican Government built in Haiti and which will be inaugurated on January 12th.
In a press release, Martelly also congratulated Dominican
Ambassador Ruben Silie, and all Haitian and Dominican engineers who worked in the construction of the campus, which is part of Santo Domingo's package of humanitarian aid provided to Haiti after the 2010 quake.
Last November Martelly visited the higher learning center in Limonade while it was under construction and said it was the result "of good cooperation between the
two people and ensures that both countries can do joint works."
The Le Roi Henri Christophe University will open its doors to 10,000
students on the second anniversary of the devastating quake. Fernandez will travel to Haiti to cut the ribbon.

Now maybe President Martelly can reciprocate by donating some toilets and desks to UASD!
Lie-onel Fernandez has stabbed his Alma mater in the back!
While Lie-onel uses our tax money to make himself look like a big altruistic statesman, Professor Castor calls for the closing of the UASD.

Ok, the DR donated money, but there are too many unanswered questions? What is this all about? Why is a poor country like the DR who although slightly better off, yet still needy, donates funds worth US$50 million as only part of a humanitarian package? Secondly, now that a structure has been built, who is going to pay for books, tuition, fees, staff, upkeep, maintenance and misc. What degrees will be offered? This reminds me of the methodology used by the Fdz govt, they love to attend ribbon cuttings when new schools are inaugurated while existing ones are left neglected and in a deplorable state.
I mean, I am happy and great to see the DR help Haiti, but are the students being prepared to what is relevant to the nation's needs. Otherwise we can easily end up with 10,000+ students who have worthless degrees. I hope this is not another public relations tactic for who knows what ulterior political motive. I would be leery of the "naked man who offers you his shirt."

You bring up good points Guille, but, like everything else that involves fernandez it would be swept under the carpet..
Leonel might be planing an invasion on dominican soil in about 4yrs when they graduate, he is going to be a civilian soon and this is part of his plan.
I'd like to see fernadez cut that ribbon then slip, fall and tangle himself with it until he blacks out

This is shameful. There are scores of DOMINICAN schools in horrible condition yet this president decides to spend the Dominican people's money on educating foreigners...on their soil. Fernandez, you're a bum and a failure. History will not be kind to you. Clean up your own back yard before worrying about your neighbor you complete and utter fool.

@josean-"Now maybe President Martelly can reciprocate by donating some toilets and desks to UASD!"
No....Haiti will instead reciprocrate and send a team of medical doctors and nurses as their mission to improve health conditions in third world countries in addition to a large influx of documented sugar case cutters with residency to help increase next season's harvest.

The new University will be completed the January 12, 2012

Dominican President announced that the University will be completed and delivered the 12 January 2012. A project of $30 million, fully financed by the Dominican Republic and Dominican business sector to be conducted under the coordination of the architect Milka Garrett.

Guys, Fernandez' gambit is that being a good neighbor will bring much more economic gains for the DR in Haiti's reconstruction plans. While the Europeans and US are moving most nations in the Caribbean, Central America and South America towards market solutions to their economic problems, Haiti will continue to receive strong foreign government support in its efforts to modernize and develop. DR stands to make much hay from those investment flows into Haiti.
From: United States
Leonel is doing great positioning himself to be a truly international leader. Mediating conflicts in the region, going beyond our borders to help our neighbors while securing more investments in the DR. Excellent.
From: United States
Leonel has no sense in him, our schools are falling apart, our roads are impassable in some parts of the country and all he cares about is looking good in the eyes of the international community. Como dice la cancion de Juan Luis Guerra, Donde estan los hombres buenos? Donde se Ven? Well guess what they are a specie that went extinct in DR...

Nobody has noticed that the haitians named the university:
"The Le Roi Henri Christophe University"
Least they could have done is not named the university after a controversial figure like Henri Christophe, who was a blood thirsty megalomaniac.
They could have named the university to do tribute to a Dominican patriot like "Juan Pablo Duarte", or even a Dominican-Haitian philanthropist and oncology pioneer, Dr. Heriberto Pieter.

Juan Bosch. It's time to stop the pillage, live up to his ethics.
I could be arrested for writing this and even worse, I might have to resign from Dominican Today, and my family harassed.
But I’ve reached my limit as a journalist, a Dominican, and as the father of my children, whose future can’t be sequels of this frustration and chaos.
President Fernandez’s Government has stolen my trust in him and his party. His Administration has stolen my dream of a country where you can plan, dream and trust in the government to do the right thing.

The old road 'camino real' or 'camino touristico' from Grand Parada to Gurabo/Santiago, serves as supply route for a lot of the produce that is consumed in Puerto Plata and provides the livelyhood for a lot of families completely apart from any 'tourism'. It is in horrible condition and continues to get worse perhaps that is not part of Lionel's bailiff, but then again is Haiti?
