Santo Domingo.- The former CEO of the State-owned electricity utility (CDEEE) on Thursday denied having left with a debt of over US$1.0 billion, as stated by his successor, Ruben Bichara.

Celso Marranzini said when he left the CDEEE on August 18, he left US$700.0 million to pay the power companies.

"I in fact left him the money with which to pay, what did happen was that we didn’t have time to locate the bonds because the transition period came, but the money was there, that is, the US$500 million which were placed now," Marranzini said.

The government needs to get out of the electric business. Regulate private utility companies to provide an expected level of service and regulate rates.

My electric company here in Samana is private and provides service 95% percent of the time but they charge RD$ 19.34 per kw. They seem to be able to charge what they want and seem to answer to nobody. That's only 4 times as expensive as my Florida rate.

well Roy you know that there are many people whot favour privitisation of nearly everything and remember that there are many private security firms with police working their second job with them .I can not believe that the whereabouts of this money cannot be found in 24 hours by any independant accountant who had the authority given to him to find it .

Privatization is always more efficient if there is competition and free enterprise, but the ground-rules need to be laid down and enforced by government.

RoyStone, i cannot imagine the government trying to provide internet service. however, in the absence of real competition, look what we have? Claro, and Orange. that is what monopoly does for you. neither of these two would last a week in a real business environment. in a place like New York...3 days...maybe.

World Bank Slaps Saint Danilo for lying like Lie-onel!

"WB blames politicians of energy problem"

SANTO DOMINGO.-The electric problem in the Dominican Republic is political, not technical, said Augusto Thursday of the Tower, Chief Economist of the World Bank (WB) for Latin America and the Caribbean.

He said that everyone in the Dominican knows very well the problem and understand their nature, even more than international agencies such as the Inter-American Bank of development (IDB) and the World Bank, as he also knows that there must be a better balance.

"The problem is central and background, because no matter with whom you converse, or with opinion leaders, entrepreneurs, workers with families, everyone knows the subject, since it is the country where most commonly used solutions private to the energy problem, since almost all businesses and even families have their own generator", said...

Everyone knows that the PLD and the PRD have proven to be corrupt, and that there are plenty of alternative candidates, but still the vast majority keep voting for these two. Why?
