Santo Domingo.- Interior and Police minister Jose Ramon Fadul headed the start of a comprehensive security plan for the Colonial Zone, with the participation of the Tourism Police, the National Police, Metropolitan Transit Authority (Amet) and the city’s Municipal Police.

He said the National Police will head the plan, with more than 300 agents and officers to provide strict security in the capital’s top tourist attraction.

As part of the security strategy, Fadul said Taiwan’s Ambassador Thomas Ping-Fu Hou on Thursday donated 30 scrambler type motorcycles and 51 two-way radios worth US$100,000.

Those motorcycles in new radios will be really handy and till they stop working correctly in about 2 weeks. Those guys sitting on El Conde will be altering the radios for the cops so they can steal cell phone service. Don't be surprised to see pizza and Kentucky Fried Chicken deliveries on really fancy new bikes at night.

From the "The more things change, the more they remain the same" Department:

In an interview on the Tele Matutino show by Ramon Nunez Ramirez and Jackeline Morel, Montas argued that the Dominican Republic is second to Guatemala in the lowest public spending in the region. He said that the fiscal deficit was mainly caused by the rising electricity subsidy and the major investment in infrastructure projects that former President Leonel Fernandez pushed to complete before his administration came to an end.

To date, the government has not reduced staff numbers in government offices after initial dismissals were met with protests from employees who alleged they were protected civil servants. The same political party continues in power and Montas is serving in the same post he held under the former Fernandez administration.

We cannot exercise self-sufficiency even for the most basic needs. Why is it that we must be standing with our hand extended for help for everything we do? why can't we pay for this ourselves?

We are like a "welfare state", with many benefactors. That's why I find it laughable whenever I read commentaries here on our impending emergence as a First World Nation. This is more than laughable, it is preposterous. We are so far from that objective, that it should not prove possible in 100 years, if not a millenium.

Perhaps a massive infusion of realism should be in order.

Zona colonial does NOT need so many agents on ..it is a waste of money . but of course, just like the proposed security cameras it will either not happen or be short lived,
What Zona colonial does need is all the roads towards Villa Francisca being repaired after the new pipes were installed ,,at the top end of Calle A Merino and Isobel la Catolica and the streets between there is nothing but slush and mud .Secondly the police station near to Parque Espana needs to have proper windows and a few chairs and a proper interviewing room .
At present the police during the day sit on corners doing nothing it is when the sun has gone down that problems commence and then 4 or 5 bikes with armed police would be very helpful , If they had nothing else to do they might as well get rid of all the stray and ferrel dogs that seem to have multiplied at a rapid rate

30 bikes, and 50 radios. that does not have a combined value exceeding the cost of one of the apartments Leo and Miss Thing gave away to their friends and relatives. embarrassing.

Who goes to the Colonial Zone anyway? Certainly not foreign tourists - there's nothing to see or do there, except buy plastic souvenirs made in China, go to Pizza Hut or get harassed by beggars, prostitutes and evangelists. Oh and five minutes to see all the actual colonial stuff.

Sorry Roy but you are not correct on thi issue ..you might just try making a booking at the hotels in ZC to see that most are very full . There are annoyances but in fact there are wonderful old churches, museums , gallaries and even homes that sit together with very interesting little bars ..I still find new things there to interest me..it is the only part of the capital that has anything of interest . Oh I forgot to say that the residents there are from a variety of places and are always wanting to engage in conversation .

Ricky, I have stayed in a hotel in the Colonial Zone. I was expecting much from such a historically significant location - No replica of the Santa Maria? No waxwork figures of Columbus or Taino Indians? No re-enactments of historical events? No museum? No art gallery? No live traditional music? No actors in historic costumes? These things could be unique to the Dominican Republic. Instead we have mediocre beaches, booze, brawls, bars and Bachata.

Ware did all the money promised for the CZ go. Some one must have it or it was just wish thinking and political cosmetics. The same jumble of wires and leaning phone poles are still here that were put in after hurricane David are still doing all the work. Just cleaning up all the jumbled phone and power cables would be an improvement but then the tourist's would have nothing to take pictures of and laugh at.

That's F@#%$g deep Roy!!

Imagine, instead of the government lending its streets for prostitution and setting a budget aside for it, the government could invest in in a Theatrical Ambiance and Sculptures and close ZC for pedestrian access only.

Pedestrian access only? What world do you live in. some one injured the rescue have to carry them to Palo Hincado hope it is you. How do tourists get to hotels carry their bags to the hotel 10 blocks away. How does the president go to mass. On foot? All would have to close their shops and what if a fire just wait until they set up a bucket brigade. Get REAL.

Sandusky is saying some positive "stuff" for a change; In fact, we HAVE a property in La General Cabral, this house has been in our family for over 80 some years. Sandusky forgot to mention La Casa de Duarte and the Alcazar de Colon (Bartolome). The majority of the houses in La Isabel and La Merino are well preserved and in good shape. Now, if you move farther towards La Avenida Espana and Santa Barbara to include the church it is a different story.

Sandusky tu sabes donde esta la famosa “CEIBA de Colon”( that is where the old Customs warehouses were located), down farther, was the "old CED Planta, and the Puente Duarte, as well as La Clinica de Saiter. Heads up DK...!!!!.

PS: VALERIO FYI, this is in SD.
