Santo Domingo.- The Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday approved the amendment to stiffen the Penal Code in a first round of voting and scheduled the final vote on Wednesday.

Among the new penalties figure raising prison sentences to 40 years; concurrent penalties as high as 60 years in prison; it penalizes land invasion and occupation; from 20 to 30 years for kidnapping, and minimums sentences of 4 to10 years adults who use children to commit crimes.

Abortion

Abortion will also be punished with from 2 to 3 years and includes women who induce or a person who helps. If a doctor, nurse, midwife, surgeon, pharmacist or other professional helps induce an abortion, the penalty would be from  4 to 10 years.

The codes are not enforced, so what is increasing the maximum sentences going to do? Up t 10 years for performing an abortion? It is high time this country left the Catholic Dark Ages. Are they still burning witches too?

That's Fidducked-up, If someones wife or daughter gets raped, the husband and father will have to grin and bare it because the government will put in jail whichever doctor lends his profession to eradicate the fetus of some punk that helped himself to the most precious gift a husband and a father could ever have.

Someone should rape a male priest and creampie him, then interview him and let him express his feelings for being violated. After he's done venting, make him feel better by saying " LOOK AT THE BRIGHT SIDE, YOU WONT HAVE TO CARRY YOUR ATTACKERS CHILD"

bernies,

That’s nice I am sure the precedent setting case of Doña Gallina will be studied by law students for generations to come!

Now what do say about Lie-onel's WATERGATE TOWERS; previously known as El Progreso, not to be confused with Narco-Towers formerly known as Torre Atiemar?

Good. 1st degree murderers deserve longer sentences, but I don't agree with sending people to prison for abortions. Unwanted children = more crime and poverty!

Sorry to tell you,Josean, but the law of precedence does not operate in the Dominican Republic...Judges may look at similar cases but are in no way bound by them .. The sight of barristers in London being followed by clerks with dozens of books that can be used in court as precedence , is unknown here .
Well as the constitution, statutory and regulatory law is not even followed , one could hardly expect a judge to follow the law of precedence

The greatest problem this country has , as a continuing problem is the high net birth rate . It is quite beyond me how the Church can encourage families to have children that they can not afford and who grow up in total poverty ,hunger ,pain and unhappiness .
No matter how many good things the church may say on various matters, this policy of regarding every foetus as holy, regardless whether it was conceived by rape , or accident or total ignorance or unwantedness , is a curse on the church and can be witnessed in nearly every poor beggar on the island

Little Ricky,

Stand down, it was meant tongue and cheek!

The only precedents set in the country are those related to Corruption; we haven't had the Rule of Law here since 1492!

So, if a doctor performs an abortion, that saves the life of a mother, he will get a prison sentence? That is so wrong on many different levels. The Catholic Church has too much power down there.

It is interesting to note that in Australia, abortion is not only legal, it is done safely by qualified surgeons, paid for by the government. Yet the rate of abortions is far lower than in Catholic countries where it is illegal, and is hence carried out by criminals in appalling conditions, often causing infection, injury, infertility and even death.

The Catholic clergy practice effective birth control - they only fu(k children.
