Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.- Unidentified assailants fired several shots Monday night which killed an Italian-American businessman in a residence he shared with another U.S. national, who was also seriously injured, including a military officer who tried to confront the gunmen.

The fatal victim was identified as Raffelle Foria, 64, who lived in the resort town of ??Sosua, the North Regional Police reported early Tuesday.

According to local witnesses, the four assailants were heavily armed and didn’t take any belongings from the residence.

Foria and air traffic controller Starley Leonard first came to the country in 1995 and called Sosúa their vacation home several times a year.

Puerto Plata Police spokesman Jesus Cordero said the men apparently burgled Fioris's residence, where Leonar was also shot several times, and is in serious condition at a clinic in the nearby town of Cabarete.

Cordero added that Daniel Fernandez Alvarado, an Air Force officer and head of the condo’s security, tried to confront the gunmen, but was shot several times and rushed to a hospital in serious condition.

Another Rave Review of Lie-onel Fernandez and the PLD's 12 years and thier Marco-Narco-Economic Miracle!

"The country has been destroyed by corruption", denounces the rector of the UCNE

"The Rector of the University Católica Nordestana (UCNE), denouces that public and private corruption, immorality and indifference have destroyed the country"

"He argued that this reality has plunged the Dominican people into the perception that the current state of affairs will not change, regardless of who governs or legislate."

"heavily armed and didn’t take any belongings"

My guess is burglary was not the motive.

Dominicans, always robbing to get ahead. In DR they get away with it but in the states they are sent away. Next to Africian Americans, they are the second largest minority group that occupy the NYS prison System. DR will never change as long as the people at the top continue to line their pockets. Crime is a natural way of life for them. Like a FRIA in the morning.

@nyceguy590- What are the statistics of Dominicans in the NY state prison system? Give me the numbers, I prefer to see facts rather then to hear about generalizations.

The Air Force officer should have been doing his primary job for what the country pays him and he wouldn't have got shot.

"heavily armed and didn’t take any belongings" My guess is burglary was not the motive.

It is quite obvious "burglary" was not the issue here and neither was robbery. There is a difference between a robbery and a burglary. Robbery involves taking something valuable and using force, or the threat of force, to do so. Armed robbery involves the use of a weapon.

Although both of these crimes are associated with theft, burglary does not always involve stolen property or the intent to steal anything. Burglary involves breaking into a building with the intent to commit a crime. Because of the difference between robbery and burglary, a person can be charged with both crimes for one incident.

Nevertheless, this is probably another example of a badly translated article. Anyway the point is this might have been a contract hit. I hate to make assumptions but too many coincidences in this case. This is an Italian American who was killed by four heavily armed assailants who took nothing

I heard a call this morning on the radio talk show called El Govierno de la Manana were the caller was saying that this shutting has something to do with the aircraft that fall down over the mountain near Haiti which was own by Aircaribe. So something smell kind of fishy here wouldn't you agreed Josean instead blaming Leonel.

I regret that people who do not live here in Panorama Village take the liberty to sully the reputation of persons they do not even know. What kind of pleasure do they derive from this?

The head of the security in our gated community is honest and respectable. He works here during the night, because he needs the money. I am convinced that he would prefer to relax after his military duties, if he could afford it.

With regard to our deceased neighbor, do not speculate or guess anymore. Just do a little research before writing nasty things. People who are familiar with the Dominican Republic know very well that armed robberies are not a rarity here. The majority have nothing to do with hitting contracts.

Another information: scientific research shows that being nice to others and showing compassion makes you feel better and adds years to your life.

Be well!

As a friend of the person who was shot and killed, I want to say that what I have read on here concerning conspiracy theories and the like are ludicrous, absurd, and completely baseless as it relates to this tragic incident. Yes - burglary was the motive, but the two victims tried fighting the burglars off, which is why they were unable to take anything, but it cost one of the victims his life and has seriously injured the other. This was a case of some savage human beings who had no respect for the life of human beings. The two victims have called this neighborhood home for years, and they were loved by many of their neighbors. They were extremely generous to the people there and did not deserve this cruel and heartless attack. Shame on everyone on here that assumed that the victims were somehow involved in some sort of illegal activity that warranted this heinous crime. They are both kind, hardworking, and respectful people that did not deserve this. May God have mercy on them.

My comments were not directed to soil persons whom I do not know.

My comments were directed to the Narco Criminals who have run this country for 12 out of the last 16 years that have created the environment for these tragedies to become a daily occurrence.

Many suffered by average Dominicans every day, that because of poverty and lack of notoriety go unreported to the general public.

Hence the moniker NARCOLANDIA!

I apologize if I have unintentionally attempted to tarnish the memory of someone who is no longer here to defend himself, unable to explain and clarify the unfortunate circumstances which suddenly and tragically took away his life. But due to the limited details reported one can't help but make allegations solely based on what was read. But an allegation is exactly that, an unproven assertion

However, regardless of the high esteem held by his friends, neighbors and love ones, it is not at all unusual for individuals with impeccable reputations to lead a double life. I'm not necessarily inferring that Mr Foria lived under false pretenses, but when forensic investigators truly want to get to the bottom of things, they leave no stone unturned. They look at any, every and all possible angles which might lead them to the truth, even if it means assuptions made are ludicrous, absurd, baseless, where anyone who may have been close and dear to him can easily become a potential suspect

calypso, in a robbery, things are generally removed from persons, or domiciles. in this case, people were shot, multiple times, yet nothing was taken. i hardly think the perpetrators would have selected this particular group of persons solely for target practice. secondly, the actions of these actors does not sully your reputation, nor the reputation of people in your area. why should it, unless you are a member of the group in question?

New report about deportations of Dominicans
By Candida Portugues, El Diario La Prensa, 1 May 2009. Translated from Spanish by Emily Leavitt.

More than 36,000 Dominicans have been deported since 1996, when then President Clinton signed into law the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act. Dominicans constitute 25 percent of the incarcerated population in New York State.

These figures come from the report, "Deported, Dominican and Human," conducted by the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights (NMCIR), in collaboration with the Immigrant Rights Clinic at New York University Law School.

that is what i bring. where is yours?

i do not have the annual immigration rates, but 5000 persons were deported last year. the yearly immigration quota has been reduced recently, based on concerns from the Department of Homeland Security that between 60-80% of visa applications are falsified.

Hey, I didn't say Dominicans are the ONLY dishonest people on the planet, (or that ALL Dominicans are dishonest - my wife being one exception that immediately comes to mind). Still Dominicans represent much less than 1% of the world's population. On this blog alone there are 36,000 dishonest Dominicans listed and less than a dozen dishonest non-Dominicans.
I rest my case.
