Santo Domingo.-  Organizations and citizens yesterday attacked the Water Bill, affirming that it seeks to privatize water sources and would violate the Constitution.

They note that the Environment Ministry has said the project is in conflict because it usurps its functions, while Dams and Canals Agency (Indrhi) director Olgo Fernandez stressed that it’s that entity which manages the rivers, dams and channels.

During the public hearings, National Business Council (Conep) spokeswoman Raquel Brea said they’re focused on the tax reform for which they’ll not address the project’s "internal unrest" for now, and instead will submit its position in writing.

The initiative is by senator Felix Nova (PLD-Monseñor Noel), who chairs the bicameral commission, submitted it to a public hearing yesterday.

Environmentalist Domingo Abreu Collado said people fear the privatization of water sources because it’s among the government’s and the political parties’ worst measures, such as the mining concession for Barrick Gold, which he affirms is more of an environmental, ecological and economic threat.

Fernandez said the Indrhi protects dams, canals and rivers, but admits that it lacks the resources to deal with, among other issues, sedimentation.

For hydraulic engineer Roberto Castillo Tio, the initiative contradicts the hydropower production law and the Health Ministry, regarding water consumption.

Privatize WATER!!!!! With these two parties still around!!! Next, it will be air. The government can't keep tabs on its employees and its contracts, who will be keeping an eye on the private company in charge of maintaining the source of water.

The PLD's job is to make the government fail in all aspects, so that privatization of the whole island is eminent.

The oligarchs are noticing Dominicans are not as dumbed as they expected.

Ways to dumb down a community are:
1. Provide mediocre education + so delay development of critical thinking well into old age (ie see posts by AnthonyC).
2. Inculcate the people well into materialism/consumerism (to the point they forget they're citizens and instead feel proud labeled "consumers").
3. Limit information flow.
4. Limit freedom of movement.

Limit to information is partially accomplished through mediocre journalism and mass media that edify materialism/consumerism.

Limit to information is completed through PRIVATIZATION.
Privatization makes it legal to outright deny information and deny access.
This tactic removes the attachment the people feel to the resource the oligarchs want to parcel out and commoditize.

By the time you notice your kids + grandkids are constantly sick, are as dumb as AnthonyC and dying younger, it is too late. The commons are already poisoned for generations

Anthony, using your logic, maybe we should privatize the government. Oh, yes, I forgot. It is already in private hands and look at the results.

Sounds like a left wing political platform

In a true free market and society how can privatization impede the flow of information. It is only the Government that can censure.

Hey simondsc3,
What you described is what has happened, and will continue to happen, in the US. This is not 'left wing.' This is what both parties do - Republicans and Democrats. And everybody copies the good old USA. The world is doomed.
