Baitoa, Dominican Republic. - Community and social organizations, and students of the mountainous town on Wednesday staged a protest to demand the opening of the hospital inaugurated in May, which despite being fully equipped, the Public Health Ministry has yet to make it operational.

Dozens of people gathered in front of the Baitoa Hospital, in Santiago province, to demand its opening, complaining that residents have to travel to Sabana Iglesia or Santiago for medical services.

"We ask the Health Ministry to put the hospital into operation, because people have to travel elsewhere to get medical care," the protesters said, quoted by Hilarion Isalguéz, of elnuevodiario.com.do.

The community leaders affirm that the authorities have yet to open the hospital on lack of funds to designate medical and administrative staff.

They said that so far only have a rural clinic, but that is insufficient for the population there, and also the services that offer the new health center will be broader.

They warned the authorities to open the health facility, or they’ll resort to other actions in the immediate future.

It cost taxpayers RD$1.8 billion and was inaugurated by former President Leonel Fernandez in July 2012, but classes have yet to begin. Listin Diario reports that the San Luis Community College, or Instituto Tecnologico Superior Comunitario (ITSC) runs the risk of ending up as a white elephant. The educational complex has 14 buildings and was planned for 16,000 students at its Santo Domingo East site.

Baitoa-A close knit community made up of good and progressive hard working people. They deserve their hospital to say the least.

Taxes will increase and this much needed hospital will open its doors to the community. Just like the bridge between Baitoa and Sabana Iglesias, the PLD has produced necessary infrastructure across the nation.

"lack of funds to designate medical and administrative staff."

There is a glut of medical graduates every year who can't get jobs, despite the pay-rates being no higher than cleaners and supermarket check-out girls. With the tax-payer funds Virgin Mother Margareta spent on the high-profile Boca Chica twins separation publicity stunt, the hospital could be staffed for years.

Says atabay:"Just like the bridge between Baitoa and Sabana Iglesias, the PLD has produced necessary infrastructure across the nation."

Right. Except said bridge, which isn't even a year old, is already showing serious structural deficiencies. The hospital itself was reporting stolen equipment even before it was completed! Shoddy public works with no follow up designed to pull the wool over the eyes of Baitoa's electorate in the last election..and it worked.

cibaeño75,

Thank You for brining this to light!

"Great astonishment by great crack in the new Baitoa Bridge."

BY: JEAN CARLOS COLLADO

The residents of the Borough of Baitoa after so many years longing for the construction of the bridge which connects Baitoa with Sabana Iglesia are now have much fear that the structure that was built just months ago is beginning to present problems in the asphalt layer and the support beams. Today Thursday we realized the disaster that aws made the engineers that built the structure.

The drainage off the bridge falls on the columns of and the beams which over time can cause problems.
