Santo Domingo.-The Emergency Operations Center (COE) announced the evacuation of more than 100 people and 23 houses damaged thus far, while the southern and central provinces remain under flash flooding and mudslide alerts as Hurricane Sandy strengthened to Category 2 over mainland Cuba.

COE director Juan Manuel Mendez said swollen rivers in San Juan and Barahona provinces and other areas of the Southwest damaged crops, while The National Meteorology Office forecasts the moderate to heavy downpours will continue across much of the country.

Sandy’s main bands were felt in Santo Domingo as early as 5am, with downpours expected to snarl the morning commute, while power went out at around 7am in the western part of Santo Domingo, where the Education Ministry announced the suspension of classes.

Heavy downpours are normal in the tropics, especially this time of year. But I have to laugh to see Dominicans scurry whenever it happens like its totally unpredictable and they've never seen rain before! Raincoats - what are they? Probably not fashionable or cool. Close the schools - who needs education anyway?

So the power black-outs were not "routine maintenance" then?

Josean has more paint jobs than an old tenement building from the lower Eastside. LOL

RoyStone, you are being extremely rude and ignorant as well as inconsiderate. My Father is on a mission trip in Barahona this very minute, rebuilding those slums and distributing food to the poor. While planting some trees is always good, please keep in mind that real people are there right now and their condition is not exactly one that they or anyone are in favor of.

morilinde,
Your father is a missionary? Is he promoting birth-control? The "condition" of these people is of their own making. They can't provide for themselves but still keep breeding like rabbits.

Ah, I see Roy; you are one of those arrogant, naive people who doesn't realize that you could have just as easily been born to one of those people who are "breeding like rabbits". I'm sure that, being the extremely sentient and logical person that you are, you would wish yourself dead or homeless if born into that situation, right? Wow, I wish I could be that selfless and impartial.

Btw, you can promote birth control all you want, but if you don't distribute or surgically implant it, it really doesn't matter. What my Father is doing, however, is actually building homes and distributing food, not just promoting the construction of sturdier homes and promoting the distribution of food. That's really not the point though; the point is that there are people suffering in the Dominican Republic and it is unfortunate. Specifically unfortunate. They lack fortune in this case. That's the thing about fortune though; it's by definition unpredictable and unlinked to what you deserve.

morilinde,
Contraception, in the form of condoms, pills and long-lasting injection, is available everywhere in the Dominican Republic and it is free from the government. Yet the unwanted pregnancy rate is still amongst the highest in the world. Why do you think that is? Unpredictable misfortune?

Luckily for people in the DR and other developing areas of the world, there are people who are willing to lend a helping hand, even when children are born unintentionally or inconveniently. It's fine if you won't, because they will. Maybe you could just consider keeping your insensitive comments to yourself. Or, maybe try being constructive. If you feel so strongly about contraception and preventing unplanned pregnancy, maybe you could do something about it in the real world instead of bashing over the internet.

The real question:
Why waste your time smugly enjoying the destruction of unfortunate peoples' meager abodes? Are you that lonely, bored, or bitter? I personally only came across this site because I haven't been able to communicate directly with my Father while he is on his mission trip and wanted to have some information regarding the severity of local conditions.

Anyway, don't worry, you won't hear from me again. Feel free to be a jerk without reproach <3

Roy Stone!!! or whoever you are!!!! how dare you??? The high number of unwanted pregnancies in that region is probably due to a high number of old western men going over there to exploit the poor by paying for sex!!!! Dominican people are the nicest and most generous people i have ever met and actually they dont breed like rabbits!!! most families i have met have an average of 2 to 3 children!!! so i dont get what you are getting at!! The United kingdom have the highest rate of teenage pregnancies in europe!!! most children in the UK live in poverty as well!! They may be poor but trust me they are richer than me and you in other ways!!! Dominican children are the most behaved and well mannered kids i have ever met.... you never see a dominican child being rude to thier parents like you do on a daily basis in the western world SO GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT !!

zara32, states
"Dominican children are the most behaved and well mannered kids i have ever met...."
Really?
Then what happens to them? How come this country has one of the word's highest rates of crime, corruption and violence?
As for the "most families (you) have met" - maybe you should get out more, because the statistical realities are totally the opposite of your anecdotal observations.

zara32,
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime,
Murder rate per 100,000 population per year
Dominican Republic 25.0
USA 4.2
UK 1.2
Australia 1.0

Get someone who understand basic arithmetic to explain to you what it means.

Well I have lived in all three countries and I don't need a bunch of statistics to tell me were I have felt safer!! As in every country there are rough parts and good parts!! Dominican children are still the most disciplined and well behave kids!! Anyway it's funny how you changed the topic !! Let's get back to the subject you were complaining about the high number of unwanted pregnancies!! As I said before that was probably due to the high number of ignorent western men probably like yourself that go over tthere and exploit the poor by paying for sex!! Making promises to those poor vulnerable women and then going back to their comfortable lives whilst leaving them alone and pregant!! As a health worker working with a charity I came across this scenario all the time! The end..

Okay, zara32, back to your subject of choice.
Perhaps you can explain what these babies are the same color as the local guys (who don't pay these prostitutes for sex) rather than more like their foreign customers who do?

You have completly lost tha plot now!!! The babies don't look like their forgein fathers???? LOOL.... Not even gonna waste my time responding to that!!!
