Santo Domingo. – Dominican Republic's State-owned Electric Utility (CDEEE) announced it has begun to gradually restore service to major hospitals, after the nationwide blackout from Hurricane Sandy’s torrential rains and wind Thursday morning, when even the National Palace was left in the dark.

It said however that power hasn’t been restores in provinces with flooded areas, to prevent mishaps with downed power lines.

"The blackout was at 6:56am, the cause of this situation it is still being determined, remember that this is a fragile energy system, which has grids from 40 to 50 years old, which also has long operating substations, and with natural phenomena like this can be put out of service,"

In a statement, the CDEEE said the nationwide outage lasted around 15 minutes, and then service began to be gradually restored.

Hurricane Sandy drenches the country

Hurricane Sandy is far to the west, now a Category 2 Hurricane making its way to the United States, but nine of the country's provinces are on red alert, nine are on yellow and 15 on green. News reports say that 1,625 people have been displaced, 325 houses were damaged and 62 communities are cut off due to flooding caused by rains brought by the storm. There has been damage to agriculture in Barahona and other parts of the southwest. The National Meteorological Office says that strong and medium rainfall will continue across the whole country today, and will be heavier in the south west, west, north west, central mountain area, center of the country and the south coast. The forecast says that the rains could continue until Saturday, 27 October.

The torrential rains that fell for almost 24 hours in Santo Domingo caused major transport problems due to poor drainage in many points in the city. The Ministry of Education has decided to suspend classes nationwide until Monday, 29 October. The rains had mostly cleared by noon on Thursday 25 October, as the outer band of Hurricane Sandy took its toll in the country.

The intense rains caused a nationwide blackout at 6:34am that forced the Santo Domingo Metro to suspend its service.

Odd...the nationwide blackout did not effect the east....I guess we are not part of the nation!

I spent the morning golfing under cloudy skies, with drizzle and a few moderate short lived showers.

The outage lasted about 15 minutes, so for the rest of the day you just switched off the electricity because it is close to the end of the month? And tomorrow the little gwagwas with ladders on top wil start driving around again, to scare people into paying? That was the case last month as well!
Deliver the service and people will pay, don´t abuse your own people! Get 24/7 service, and get paid for 24/7 service!

Heavy rain does not make a hurricane, and nor do power black-outs (the norm in a failed state). Category 1 hurricane - wind speeds 48 to 55 knots. Category 5 - greater than 136 knots. By the look of the umbrella, there was almost no wind.

So Roy all it took was a heavy rain to shut down the "mighty" USELESS METRO?

hey, on a normal windy day in NYC, there are umbrellas strewn all over the street, in pieces. this guy is holding one, with the greatest of ease. could not have been much of a hurricane, could it?

Heavy rain always affect the NYC Subway and other rail systems....

SDM was back in service within 15 mins... much better than NYC Subway, which has been in service since the late 1800's.

for a guy with such a big mouth, you should check your facts before you speak. the subway opened in 1905. the el was operating before that.
