E. Wessin.

Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo.- More than a simple resignation submitted yesterday by National Assets (BN) director Elias Wessin Chavez, it was president Danilo Medina who allegedly and discretely asked him to resign, in the wake of a RD$179 million scandal stemming from an Accounts Chamber audit.

Wessin said he had placed his post “at the President’s disposal” after the audit revealed payroll irregularities of more than R $179 million paid to people without any function and other expenses.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Wessin called the Chamber audit “selective,” alleging that results from other agencies have yet to be released.

According to the audit, the BN paid more than RD$160 million to people who don’t do any work and RD$19 million in other unsupported expenses.

Media buzz

Wessin’s plight is the buzz on Friday morning media, with most opinion makers agreeing that medina fired him in an effort to squash the scandal.

I dream of a firing squad.

With and endless supply of bullets.

Hey, Berlusconi was just sent to jail for 4 years + 13,000,000 Euros fine.

If Italy can do it, why not us?

These people have no shame. And you are expecting the system to improve for exports.

The biggest laugh is on the Domincan people because they are glutens for punishment.

We the people demand that justice be served!

Wessin Chavez must be prosecuted to full extent of the law.

We would expect full restitution of funds and incarceration, if found guilty.

I really believe it would be of great service if budgets and justification of same for all departments would be published. that way, we could really establish where money is going, make appropriate cuts and spread and share the pain equitably.

We must stop all of these "fiefdoms" and tie the lords hands. It is abosolutely amazing and beyond belief just how much free access there is in DR to the people's money, and how easily it is misappropiated.

Nuria, culd you please do a story on this issue?

Thank you.

People in the PLD Elite and their associates are blatantly are Stealing Billions of Pesos every Second of Every Day and look at what “honorable” Attorney General Considers a PRIORITY to Prosecute.

Attorney General arrests ten men for falsifying documents

The Prosecutor Dominguez Brito said that the so-called "buscónes" are stealing the people's money and "unscrupulously" give them counterfeit documents and this cannot be allowed.

This is the equivalent of prosecuting IRS Atabey for eating Grapes at PATHMARK while letting Bernie Madoff go scot-free!

josean I add to that ,take away their passports and visas: must likely they hold dual citizenships,

which is illegal in any country to be a citizen of one while representing another at congressional

capacity. Add to that investigate their international investments as well as bank accounts and freez

them.

If the whole system were computerized this would not be happening. A centralized database would record and monitor every single peso paid out to employees and contractors. Has Microsoft finalized the contract with the government? We need this ASAP!

No mention to if or when they will get any of this misappropriation of money back, for the "people who don’t do any work" and the "unsupported expenses"

I bet their money is invested either in Switzerland,Miami,Brazil or Spain. No where are they going

Even after legislation is passed to punish politically motivated individuals who steal public funds the message will go unheaded until public executions begin. One a day for a year should begin to thin out the ranks of those who profit while Dominicans starve..
