Puerto Plata.- A Canadian citizen was arrested at his home in the resort town of Sosua, charged with growing 30 marijuana plants in 27 potters, the National Drugs Control Agency (DNCD) announced Friday.

The foreigner living in the Dominican Republic was identified as Lord James Douglas, 62, nicknamed El Canadiense and / or El Gringo.

A judge authorized the warrant to search Douglas’ house in Los Cerros, Sosúa, says a statement issued by the DNCD office in Puerto Plata.

It adds that the accused was using 27 potters to grow marijuana on the roof of his house, detected by DNCD agents, who found plants which had grown as high as one foot.

Doing as they have done many places in the world today, namely let it be legal to grow a certain amount for own use, would give the police more officers to fight the REAL crime - But this is a way for the police (and up) to milk some money from this Canadian.
If the States let all the prisoners go, who are incarcerated just for possession of grass, they would have plenty of room for real criminals.
One foot high plants???? Who ratted that one out to the police? If they had waited, till the plants were big enough for harvesting, I could understand it, but these plants were worthless.
Legalize it - do like the Dutch - and use the money to pay the police a decent salery, so they don't have to make their money by hazzling an old man, who likes to smoke a joint - Who is he hurting??
It would be better, if they used some more energy on the cocaine traffic and the many illigal weapons floating around in the country - that would be safer for all!

Josean - as I have no part in the American election, not being American, why should I clear my opinion with Romney (or Obama) on this ? -
It is time for the different countries, where smoking still is illigal, to accept, that this natural plant helps a lot of sick people, and they should be allowed to use it, without hazzles - and this is the only recreational "drug" where no chemicals has been used - as it is with everything else!
Someone told me:"They won't legalize it, because then people will stop drinking rum, as getting high on grass is cheaper, than getting drunk"! Could that be the reason for all the countries, that still forbid this plant???? Loss of taxes from the alcohol????

truefriend,

Most countries have decriminalized it, which is very different from legalizing it. If they do legalize it, be assured it will be taxed, commercialized and chemicals added to make it burn faster.

Note that the Dominican Republic wants to sue the Australian Government for introducing plain-packaging laws to reduce the shelf-appeal of cigarettes.

truefriend,

I just thought that since you are leading the "Danish Committee for Mitt Romney" here at DT per your comments on another article, you might cost him some votes by endorsing the legalization of marijuana.

Dimwit Rot-mney who you endorsed to become president of the United States, does not support decriminalizing of marijuana but does supports people who think abortion should be criminalized; believe in legitimate rape and forcing women to bring to term pregnancies caused by rape or incest, including the nut he picked for Vice President, Paul Ryan!

Tomas,
The laws vary a little from state to state. Trafficking and selling marijuana is illegal. Smoking it is not. Growing up to 12 plants for your own consumption is also allowed. Driving under the influence of THC (and a number of other drugs including alcohol) is also illegal. My state of Victoria was the first in the world to introduce random drug-testing of drivers.
Recently an Australian smoked 2 joints and put the clip on U-tube. He used a page from the Bible for one, and a page from the Koran for the other, for comparison. You can imagine the reaction - classic!

In Australia it depends who you are. A lawyer's son, who bribes the police can deal STOLEN dope at a private school and the police let him off completely; the lawyer is involved in lots of deals with police involving payoffs from wealthy clients. Now if you have not got money or the "status" of a lawyer you can be convicted for having one gram on you. It is often used as a form of blackmail in Australia ie. involving "deals" or threats from police.Seems most teenagers will have smoked it it is so common I hear.(Lawyers freely snort cocaine at their lunches in Australia ,as do the judges, before going on to prosecute people in the afternoon or next morning).

For the last 5 years most of the ex-pat smokers in Sosua/Cabarete grow and sell the good stuff - Diesels, Kushes, Hazes, etc., luckily. This Canadian didn't pay the right person initially, and will now have to pay a lot more. BEWARE of ex-pats in this area. They are extremely jealous of each other, who has and gets what, jobs, money, houses, cars, drugs, etc., and they turn each other in to the police to get back at somebody. It's likely that this happened here, something like he refused to front somebody a quarter ounce until payday, and they got back at him. Ex-pats are friends to nobody.

72C. Defence to prosecution for offences involving cultivation

It is a good defence to a prosecution for an offence against section 72, 72A
or 72B involving the cultivation of a narcotic plant if the person charged
with the offence adduces evidence which satisfies the court on the balance of
probabilities that, having regard to all the circumstances (including his or

preparatory to the alleged commission of the offence, he or she did not know

Tomas... when was the last time you saw an accountant actually add up numbers in the head??
They are called spreadsheets or a calculator.....You put the numbers in and it adds them up..
I would rather a pot smoking accountant than a drunk one... plus some pot smokers become very fastidious when stoned..

All studies have shown to some degree short term memory loss as an affect of marijuana use...
I think???
mmm not sure?? but I think I read it some where???

Laws change with governments in respect to growing in OZ.. One year it 12 plants or X kg for personal use, the next it's 6 etc etc.....
You get caught with one baggy and your done for selling... Selling is the line in the sand but even that changes when the libs get control....

Growers are more afraid of others stealing the crop than getting busted by the cops...

I would love to see the legislation for 12 plants. I have a friend in Coffs Harbour NSW who would love 12 plants for his wife's disease but a stern word of warning. I have heard there is a a very dangerous form of cannabis grown hydroponically that is leading to psychosis. My daughter's friend was beaten after her husband went psychotic on it. Being an old man I am not up with the lingo for this stuff. It is alleged chemicals are used in the production and I get conflicting information about it.

Yes dope is non addictive and studies show it does improve concentration but short term memory loss. The hemp oil is allegedly curing cancers but yet to be convinced.seems risky in younger teenagers?

The hydroponic story is enough to not let me touch it with a barge pole.

Love any feedback on this as I am rather ignorant of it's effects on one and concern for my kids and friend's kids (oh grandkids now too)

The active narcotic in marijuana is tetra hydro canibinol or THC. It is shown to have some medicinal benefits for some conditions, but also has detrimental side-effects, especially with prolonged use. The other problem is, the main way of indulging is through inhalation of the smoke, which may be less addictive than nicotine, and contain fewer carcinogens than tobacco, but is still harmful, especially if mixed with tobacco, a very common practice.
I doubt if growing it hydroponically would make much difference to its toxicity. It is arguably less harmful than alcohol or tobacco, however it is unlikely anyone quits these by taking up marijuana.
