Santiago -. Two of Dominican Republic’s top filmmakers decided to take the law into their own hands, with a bat and a shotgun, started chasing vendors of bootleg DVDs who sell their films illegally, managing to grab several and holding them until police arrived.

Alfonso Rodriguez and Archi Lopez agreed to act after learning that pirates sell Rodriguez’s production "Ugly by day, cute by night " at some busy street corners in Santiago and came to the city with other filmmakers and police.

Rodriguez railed against the bootleggers, noting that the film has been in theaters just three weeks and would be released in Puerto Rico early December.

The filmmakers’ attitude met with rebuke from the Office of the District Attorney and the Police, which warned that they face arrest for their action.

Don't agree with they way it was done but you put your work out there only to have it pirated... It will only hurt the industry and make it not worth the already big gamble of making entertainment for others...

I never sure weather to shake my head and smile or be angry when I see cops buying pirated DVD's???

DK,

You finally got one RIGHT!!!! it is called “AGGRAVATED ASSAULT,” and due to the nature of the weapon, it can be upgraded to “ attempted murder”. Nevertheless, DK is on target. Both parties need to go to jail.

Only a corrupt government would punish a citizen for defending their property and upholding the law.

Only a weak willed, fascist would support a government who acts that way.

Marielito,

Why don't you assault anybody here with a b-bat, STUPID!. I guarantee you that you will pay your butt off in fines and possibly jail time. That’s why Fidel kicked you a****s out (lawless prick).

there are ways to defend one's property beside taking weapons to them. i would not expect primitives and neanderthals to understand that idea. but civilized people do. money is property. defense of property is a civil issue. that is what courts are for. you do not protect money by resorting to aggravated battery. well, maybe you do, since you have not yet evolved to the status of human being ,anyway.

A real man defends himself and his property. There is a name for those who wait for the Government to protect them,............VICTIMS.

This sounds like a DVD vigilante. Nevertheless let’s be real and put into perspective. This is the DR where justice is not always effective. I don't agree with how these two reacted but I do understand. However, committing a crime to punish crime is no way to achieve social order rather a sure way to anarchy. But wild justice feels so much better than no justice at all. And taking it into your own hands can be a source of satisfaction for those frustrated with the system. Ironically as it sounds, those who feel victimized must have done a sort of premeditated costs- benefits analysis. But the bottom line is that vengeance is not reflective but an emotional reaction where the person feels empowered and joy follows along with it.All individuals have needs they strive to satisfy either by using the system, acting on the fringes, as reformist or revolutionary. Given this condition, social systems must be responsive to needs or be subject to instability and forced change through violence

The difference between a “Balsero and a Marielito”, it is really significant in terms of the moral character of these two groups. One migrates running from a tyrant; the others (marielitos) were the scum of the Cuban society, these were forced out of the country by Fidel in the early 80s. AC'’senio you belong to this bunch of undesirables.

you are mentally a jungle creature, with no concept of modern society. thankfully, your primitive ideology is not widespread, because all civil issues would be resolved by violence. a savage, who belongs on an island by himself.

Vigilante justice? or citizen's arrest?
When there's absent law enforcement, citizens have a duty to apply the law.
Although, and specially in the DR, if all citizens where to act with physical violence, then the entire country would submerge into chaos and anarchy, such as it was before 1930.

General, where there is an issue of physical security, i will agree that citizens will occasionally have to defend themselves by their own devices. making bootleg copies of dvd is not a security issue. it is a civil violation. application of physical remedies should not be applicabe in a case like this.

Ironically, the ones advocating unnecessary violence, in lieu of utilizing the legal and law enforcement systems, are more than likely a bunch coward when it comes to confront an enemy. My question to these “wanna be” Machotes; have you ever shoot anybody or being shot at. If not, just STF-UP!!!

Wow, this is news to me!
I didn't know there is any copyright law in this country since pirated material (movies, music and software) is the norm. This law will not be enforced until after road-rules are enforced, and that will not be until after hell freezes over.

Unfortunately, trading pirated movies and music is a big busine$$. The only way to contribute to stopping it is to start with you. Do not buy bootlegged products especially if you have kids.

But again, this happens everywhere... blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfairpark/2012/10/drunk_guy_leaves_behind_truck.php

I'll add to what I said before as response to what others have also brought up...

Now imagine asking that cop buying pirated DVD's to arrest the guy selling them... . he most likely wouldn't even know it was against the law, or would shake you down for money.. then buy more DVD's...
