Santo Domingo.- The Catholic Cardinal yesterday said the fact that the announcement of new tax hikes as high as 15 percent and a broadening of the tax base to 18 percent can lead the country to social turmoil, is nothing new.

"In 40 years that has been staged many times," said Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez.

The prelate noted that president Danilo Medina has been the first to regret the situation that has led him to propose a stronger tax formula. "The country is in a very, very serious situation, therefore, what he has proposed is to see if he can more or less balance the economy in two years."

He had previously said he doesnot believe that business which bears the brunt in the proposed tax package, for which everyone must tighten their belts, and the officials setting the example, controlling spending and avoiding waste.

The cardinal, speaking after officiating a mass in the Olympic Stadium, said everyone should contribute with their share the sacrifice and to “grin and bear it.”

if Leo and the missus gave back what they stole, the budget would balance itself.

Didn't they ever teach you the 10 Commandments........or the "DO as I say not as I DO!" rules of the Catholic Church?

this would perhaps be a fair question,if it were possible, under the agreement with the vatican in a concordia. the DOMINICAN GOV'T ( PEOPLE) are responsible for the building and maintenance of all ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCHES in the country, including salaries.

Cardinal Nickey will support any tax rate that will allow the church to live in the style they have become accustomed for the past 500 + years in the Dominican Republic!

Maybe a revision of the concordia would be a good place to make some cuts in the budget, I am sure the good father wouldn't mind, after all a lot of it is for social packages forthe poor whom they profess to love so much.

Why this clown has any say about government is beyond me. Let me re-phrase that, Why anybody listens to what this clown has to say is beyond me. Do you really actually believe that he is a direct conduit to "god"? Wake up people or you shall forever be a banana republic.

benwaballs, here is my problem with these direct conduits to God. how come nobody is ever around when God comes to speak to them? not even the occasional eavesdropper? what's that all about?

@dreadlocks, man you said it. Don't get me started.

Nickey The Hat is affraid he will suffer. His chanses on becoming the next Richest Man on Earth, (Pope) will go down if he loses this concordia! The agreement is, the people will pay 100% of the costs of the RC. Church, including an ample salary AND PENSION for Nickey the Hat and ALL his helpers, priests, bishops, assistent bishops, abusing padres, all of them!
And the majority of the Dominican people is Christian, ex-catholic! Do we want to keep paying for this? Change, re-negotiate the concordia and save the world from Nickey the Hat as Pope! Be fast, the present one is very old!

It is encouraging to see so much condemnation of this parasitic, tax-exempt multinational corporation by posters on Dominican Today. It is a pity it does not flow on the the Dominican people in general, and for them to tell the government to tear up their Concordat with the Holy See.

GoneNative,
What makes you think Nicky-the-hat is in line for the Pope's job? Given the size of their market, and the inroads the Evangelical churches have been making, I think a Brazilian Pope is more likely.

Sure, Pope Stone

I would give up my left nut to see Roy in the Nicky Hat.
