Santo Domingo. - "With no one in jail progress can’t prevail.” "It’s not a lack of money, it’s an excess of thieves" and "The people united will never be defeated" are some of the slogans shouted by hundreds of protesters who came Sunday afternoon at the Puerta del Conde to oppose the tax reform.

The protesters want the government headed by Danilo Medina to repeal the new law and investigate the root of the fiscal deficit of RD$187.0 billion, and to prosecute those responsible.

Members of the middle class dressed in black started gathering at 2pm in a show of force which didn’t exclude sex or ages.

In another demonstration in the mounting protests, candles were lit at the site the student Florian William Ramirez was killed by a police agent last week at the Santo Domingo State University (UASD) while participating in a protest against the tax reform.

"Severed dialogue"

Ex vice president Milagros Ortiz Bosch said the government broke off the dialogue to listen to alternatives presented by several economic entities.

She said she regrets that the population still doesn’t have an explanation on the cause of the budget deficit that led to a tax reform. "There’s not one person in jail, there’s no accusation and we have yet begun to pay what it represents."

multiply

It's NOT for lack of money!
It's ridiculous pensions, botellas, blatant theft, cronyism, corruption, failure to hold responsible the politicians, and the list goes on. Sad state of affairs.

Thousands and thousands gathered. I was there and let me tell you the saddest is that many who supported PLD are the very ones who are protesting.

If the PLD had the presidency for 12 years and there is this obvious theft and fraud, then who is responsible????? Fernandez and the slime he walked with. Fernandez is a despicable lacra who should rot in jail for the rest of his life. Worse yet is the insipida Margarita who could possibly be President. They are %.

I hope Danilo has a guarda espalda because Fernandez y his beard are not through looting Quisqueya and do not be surprised if Danilo winds up dead.

Fernandez is responsible and there will never ever be the investigation necessary to resolve the problem. Yet, we Dominicans are paying the price.

I hope the PLD and all those who supported Fernandez and his criminal element rot in hell with LF and his insipid inculta

Carmen,
There are still peope who blindly defend Fernandez on this site.... Sadly there is a large portion of the population that supports the inmoral behavior of our ex-president and his close circle...
I am glad to see we have pople like Guillermo Moreno and Alianza Pais who are seeking justice on behalf of our nation..

Carmen, i was also looking at a scenario wherein Danilo got whacked, and Margarita became president. however, i think that it is too late for that , because Leo knows that the climate in the country is getting ugly, and it would lead to a rebellion, in which he would end up having to go into exile.

I will say that in 2016 people will have a different opinion of the PLD... They will not remain in office unless Danilito shows some muscle during the next four years..

The assembly of people was very peaceful and relatively quiet and there were some good speeches and some very good points made...There was a small fringe of people who were noisy and had nothing to contribute .The police did a very good job and I did not see them provoked ...they seemed to be quite relaxed..Pacos , I am sure did a very good business .
I live quite close to Puerta Conde , the entrance toparque Independencia and I thought the crowd was quite a lot less than the procession of San Miguel that was a couple of weeks ago .
My view after chatting with a variety of people in Zona Colonial is that Danilo is a far different person that Leonel and he is aware that the people want to know why there was suddenly a cash problem and if any public money was stolen ..

Sadly Dominicans are their own worst enemies. They talk a lot but do nothing. From my experience the majority of the senior people in the government lacks experience to manage an administer, resulting in shear waste of resources and mismanagement of funds. Analogize the same situation with a large private company run by incompetent personnel from top down, what will happen? The company will cease to exist in a very short time. The same is true in the Government offices of Dominican Republic. Unfortunately the Government has given themselves the power to force people to pay high taxes for their inadequacies and misdemeanors without any recourse fiscal accountability. This will not happen in developed countries. Until this specific hurdle of accountability is cleared and competency rules, Dominican Republic will to progress toward a first world country, where different rules of accountability apply.....openness!

LIke every one else I would like to know how we all of a sudden had this large cash defecit ,,is it not within the powers of either the Treasury or the Finace Department to tell the Dominican people what has happened ,,it is silly to have all the rumours going around when the truth is , I am sure , is known to people who handle the countrys finances. .
But Danilo has not been president for long and he has already done many things to right the ship.

How positively DISGUSTING that Danilo will allow THE SNAKE FERNANDEZ to address Quisqueya. It is VULGAR and insulting. Fernandez has no credibility and I believe there should be massive protest against his being allowed to speak.

I hope he is destroyed because LF is absolutely a despicable low life.

A bigger and better protest against more taxes

Yesterday, Sunday 11 November confirmed that "The struggle has just begun," as dozens of organizations had said during a peaceful protest against Tax Reform Law 253-12 outside the National Congress building on Tuesday, 6 November. Diario Libre describes how Independence Park, at the Gate of El Conde, was the setting that hundreds of people chose for the demonstration, in a mass expression of opposition to the law signed by the President on Saturday, 10 November following the passing of the bill in Congress the previous Thursday, 8 November. The mostly young middle class demonstrators used placards, national flags, black clothes and black flags as their props for expressing rejection of the much talked about and controversial "package". This, without a doubt, could be defined as one of the most energetic demonstrations by civil society against the tax increase.

The protestors sang "La Guagua" by Juan Luis Guerra, an allusion to the fact that the country, like the bus in the song, is "in reverse." To the sound of trumpets, guitars and drums, the crowd chanted: "The (fiscal) hole belongs to Leonel; let him pay it."As well as expressing their opposition to the fiscal reform, the occasion was used to demand better education, health and an end to violence. The demonstrators also challenged the National Police n whose agents surrounded the area - about the death of UASD student William Florian Ramirez, at the hands of one of its members. "Not with bombs and not with bullets, this struggle will not be stopped," they shouted. Protestors called for the resignation of Police chief Major General Jose Armando Polanco Gomez. The Medina administration is being criticized for failing to explain the reason for the increase in the record RD$187 billion fiscal debt.

Former President Leonel Fernandez blamed the fiscal deficit on the Hipolito Mejia administration (2000-2004). Civil society and the private sector say that the fiscal deficit is the consequence of political patronage and wasteful spending in the PLD administrations.
