President Danilo Medina, Leonel Fernández.

SANTO DOMINGO.-  After an intense week that began with criminal accusations filed at the Justice Ministry against two of his closest collaborators and several protests including one in front of the think tank that he chairs, former president Leonel Fernandez will address the country at 10pm tonight, when his speech mostly about the fiscal deficit could take the heat off his ruling PLD party colleague and successor.

In that regard, president Danilo Medina is slated to travel to Spain today for the Ibero-American Summit in Cadiz, after confusion on Monday when local media reported the canceling of the trip.

In a statement Fernandez's press aide Rafael Nunez said the ex president "will refer to the way his government handled the economy, especially the fiscal deficit, a topic on which different national sectors have opined."

Fernandez was criminally charged last Tuesday by the minority political party Alianza País, along with former Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua and former State Works Engineers Supervising Office director, Senator Felix Bautista, for alleged malfeasance, ballooned contracts, and private trips paid with taxpayers’ money for Fernandez’s think tank, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode).

Justice minister Francisco Domínguez warned he’ll proceed with a “cold head" on the various complaints filed for prosecution, which he called “political,” adding that no one will dictate policy to his Dept. with a document of a "political nature."

What is Fernandez going to say, he will either blame it on someone else or give a long elaborated speech that says nothing as he usually does. Empty sentences filled with words that mean nor explain anything..

In my opinion leaving your predecessor to provide the excuses whilst disappearing out of the country is a very poor political decision and totally undermines the credibility of Danilo. He should not need anyone to explain the deficit. He was part of the government that created it so must know where the money went and how and why it was spent.

Fernandez is only going to come out with a load of excuses, not the truth, and if the situation is as normal only 50% of the population will hear what he has to say as the rest will be without electricity as per normal. That is unless he has been able to persuade the companies to provide power everywhere for the length of his speech.

Not that anyone really wants to hear it!!

Really? "like fausto the motoconcho"? In what warped dimension are you sliding off to Dready?

Fernandez is like a motoconcho!

First, the people or at least a vocal segment are upset at the news that their taxes are going up, and that 5% of PID isn't going towards the subsidizing of the university system, among other things. Many of them blame ex-President Mr. Fernandez for these outcome. In a mature democratic polity, things would operate differently; but as you may be aware of by NOW!, DR is far from being a MATURE DEMOCRATIC POLITY. It is a developing democratic order with strong caudillista or Presidentialism tendencies.

second, the fiscal deficit should be explained as wild speculation-ALL TOO FAMILIAR IN DR!-POLLUTES THE WATERS OF DISCUSSION ON MATTERS SMALL AND LARGE. Take the multi-millions of dollars supposedly held in a secret bank account by one of the candidates? the attempted 11 hour computer hack job that was foiled? There are just too many crazies willing to poison the well in their attempt to gain what they couldn't at the ballot box.

And I ask you dready: Is it all too implausible that given an election year, the ruling party might just try to pad and overstimulate the engine a tad? :)

I don't see anything wrong with Fernandez going before the public and stating his defense; it certainly beats not answering any request to do so. :)

that is exactly what happened. that is why the country is in a world of sh*t. that is why there has to be a tax package, because of the deficit caused by thievery and misspending. watch the fun happen when the devaluation kicks in early next year. Leo manipulated the currency for 8 years, and the chickens have come home to roost. if Danilo wants the IMF agreement, he will have to devalue. combine that with the paquetazo, and you are staring at a tinderbox.

The sad thing is that Fernandez will not go to jail, the PLD will not allow it and as we all know they run the show.. I don't think we can be called a democracy, we’re letting the PLD get away with murder.
Perhaps a general purge of the government and public agencies will help, but we have to face the music, Danilo doesn't have the cojones to do it...
The only man who is capable of such thing if elected is the one publicly denouncing Fernandez, why not support him i ask? Why not give our nation a chance to change for the better, to become a modern nation by creating an atmosphere of respect for the law and a greater sense of moral conduct.
Is not that there aren't good people intending to do good, it is that us as a country can't seem to get our act together and start walking in the right direction.
I don't want to hear what Fernandez has to say, we all know he is a liar..

Yes, dready it fits you like a glove these days. From your too lazy indifference to the gun trotting hoodlums parading among the "students" and the violent death these caused last week. And now you seek to establish god's Kingdom on earth with your silly take on the equality of all citizens. Dude, it's alright to tell things as they are, no need to hide under such nonsense.

I remember when doing some work early in my twenties at a public school and I took a class of seniors to visit the court system in lower Manhattan. A judge came inn to give his presentation and asked the students if justice was blind? after a pause, some ventured to say well that i a democracy justice had to be blind or trust would be lost in the system. Well, back came the judge and said, Money all too often influences the outcome.

It's all dandy to talk about Political absolutes, "All men are equal" but as Catherine the Great told Voltaire: "You philosophers are lucky men. You write on paper and paper is patient. Unfortunate Empress that I am, I write on the susceptible skins of living beings."

Modern political system are closer to Catherine's take than to Voltaire's.

this is not looking too good. there is a video depicting the student being in a gunfight with the cops. he is seen running with a pretty big handgun. apart from the fact that he invited the outcome, is this a harbinger of things to come? how is this going to play out in political circles? will the next gunfight involve a horde of shooters, instead of a lone adventurer?

people like Atabey do not have enough political savvy to understand these nuances. Danilo is a newly installed President. he has to be given free space to get his agenda off the ground. Leonel Fernandez is a guy who is back to being a PRIVATE CITIZEN, after running the country for 12 years. the country is mired in its first major crisis since Danilo took the reins. he is the President. it is his responsibility to address the nation, if the situation calls for it. what Leo has done is to say, in effect " step aside, sonny, and watch how the big dogs handle these things". Danilio deserves to have been allowed to deal with this problem, without Leonel meddling in it. he has no portfolio as far as national matters are concerned. he can write op ed articles, or he can lay out his answers on Twitter, or Facebook. to usurp the opportunity from Danilo to show the nation what is plans and intentions are make him look like Danilo's babysitter. get it yet, Atabey?

Leonel Fernandez:

"The ex-president said a fiscal deficit is not a fraud or a crime that deserves to be persecuted for justice, referring to the legal submissions to several organizations filed against him.

"But unfortunately in our country there are political forces, that given their ideological tradition should favor a strong state, but oppose it by formulating arguments that fall into the field of manipulation, slander, the Big lie and slander. But, as always in the history of nations, will not slander, lies will collapse and baseness and infamy will not find fertile ground to germinate, "he said."

"...formulando alegatos que más bien caen en el campo de la manipulación, la calumnia, el infundio y la maledicencia. Pero, como ocurre siempre en la historia de los pueblos, la calumnia no pasará, la mentira se desplomará y la vileza y la infamia no encontrarán terreno fértil donde germinar”
